Scottish Beasties Pocket Field Guide: The Trackers' Compendium of Rare Scottish Creatures
Scottish Beasties Pocket Field Guide: The Trackers' Compendium of Rare Scottish Creatures
by Lachie Dundurn
Edition: Paperback

5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic little book, 11 May 2011
This is an absolute gem of a book which introduces the reader to the "wee beasties" that are to be found all over Scotland - from Golden Eagle to Hairy Horny Haggis, Highland Midge to Bampot and Bogle. It mixes fact with fantasy in just the right way to keep it fun and informative for all age-groups. Mixed in with interesting facts, tracking tips and wonderful drawings is the strange disappearance of the author Lachie Dundurn ... where did he go and why?

Pocket sized, glossy and beautifully illustrated - it is the perfect gift for anyone you know - young or old - whose heart belongs to Scotland (or anywhere else for that matter).

I love it.

The Fry Chronicles
The Fry Chronicles

2.0 out of 5 stars So disappointing ..., 27 Dec. 2010
This review is from: The Fry Chronicles (Hardcover)
I like Stephen Fry.
I loved "Moab".
I didn't like this.
The book felt rushed - you could hear the deadline whooshing past (to paraphrase a sentence in the book).
Whereas "Moab" was a joy from cover to cover, The Fry Chronicles was really a bit of a 'plod' and, I have to say, the author's constant "oh I am such a poncey, useless, talentless prat" became irritating long before the conclusion of the book.
I don't know, it was all just a bit ... disappointing.
But I still like Mr Fry.

Wishful Drinking
Wishful Drinking

1.0 out of 5 stars HUGELY DISAPPOINTING, 5 Dec. 2008
This review is from: Wishful Drinking (Hardcover)
I am a fan of Carrie Fisher's writing and was looking forward to reading this book - billed as "her first ever memoir". It is a hugely disappointing read. First off, it barely stretches to 163 pages in length (that is including the "acknowledgements" section!) and is printed in a size of typeface normally reserved for (very young) children's books. The content is non-existent - her mum and dad are Debbie Reynolds and Eddie Fisher, she married the short guy from Simon and Garfunkel, her gay friend died in her bed and she has an addiction problem. Now that I have told you that, you don't need to buy the book. Trust me. That's all that there is to it - apart from a rambling section about her being Princess Leia. I hate to say this, because I really like Carrie Fisher, but this book is a rip-off. And another thing, the publishers should all be given eye tests as the text is riddled with printing errors - giving the further impression that the whole thing was a cynical rush-job. Save your money. Not worth it.

Prime [DVD] [2005]

1.0 out of 5 stars Dull as ditchwater, 8 Oct. 2006
This review is from: Prime [DVD] [2005] (DVD)
This has to be one of the worst films I have ever seen. I watched the first 30 minutes (hoping it would improve) and, finally, gave up. There was not the slightest "sparkle" to the film, no chemistry between the two lead actors and even the mighty Meryl Streep (in a terrible wig) couldn't lift it. I am not a fan of Uma Thurman's acting at the best of times, and her performance in this effort was laughably bad (the scene when she is outside the cinema and meets her future paramour for the first time is excruciating to watch). A predictable and turgid plotline didn't help either. Absolutely awful. Don't waste your time or your money.
