5.0 out of 5 stars What can I say? Is it just a charger?, 15 Jan 2014

Well yes and no. What is a little different about this one (and there are admittedly many similar) is that the electric lead is detachable from the plug by a USB socket so that it can be plugged straight into your Laptop, PC or even your car (with the correct adaptor, of course)

The Casual Vacancy
The Casual Vacancy

3.0 out of 5 stars First adult novel, 15 Jan 2014

This review is from: The Casual Vacancy (Paperback)
First off this is no Harry Potteresque novel, so forget any extension of that series. It seems that has been put firmly in the past. Generally, though, The Casual Vacancy is a solid, traditional and determinedly unadventurous English novel. Set in the pretty little town of Pagford, in the West Country, and is a study of provincial life, with a large cast and multiple, interlocking plots. The only parallel I can see, and it is slim I grant you, with the Potter books is that, like them, it is animated by a strong dislike of mean, unsympathetic, small-minded folk. This book has all the satisfactions and frustrations of this kind of novel. It immerses the reader in a richly peopled, densely imagined world. Rowling has reportedly drawn on her own mildly unhappy West Country childhood, in a village outside Bristol and then later outside Chepstow. The claustrophobic horror is nicely done: everyone knowing everyone. Rowling is good at teenagers, particularly boys, and unhappy couples. The book has a righteous social message, about responsibility for others, and a great big plot that runs like clockwork and like the Potter novels, it is efficiently organised beneath its busy surface. The only problem for some people is that the book is by that "Harry Potter" author and you have to put that fact very much aside. Perhaps (and it would have been very interesting) she should have released it under a pen name?

4.0 out of 5 stars Very underrated 4th Album, 15 Jan 2014

This review is from: Eldorado (Audio CD)
The first truly conceptual album release from The Electric Light Orchestra sees Jeff Lynne go away from overdubs and employ a full orchestra for the first time (retaining core band string members). I remember this album, at the time of its release, grabbing the attention and interest from the music press. "Can't Get It Out of My Head" was released as a single, and although it did not really make any impression on the UK charts it did start to break them in America. That being said it did not propel them into the megga band they would became (that started with the next album, Face The Music, being a lot more commercial to the ears) but put them on the road to stardom. It is a good album with the core of the band that would stay together through their heady 'Superband' era.(but not great - there were better albums hitting the charts at this very competitive moment in time). If you are a fan of ELO or indeed Jeff Lynne this is a must buy.

A very good idea for a very good price and the real thing too. I have had some cheaper products which in the end are not cost effective. This saves time and money (packaging and postage costs) and being ordered from Amazon I can send this to my daughter (a poor student) at University.

A fantastic collection. I have always loved Puffin books and were bought up on them as a child. What a wonderful idea to put all these covers together. At my age I do not need to read these books again, but to have the reminder of covers and the stories they held will bring back memories of a very happy childhood.

The Lazy Teacher's Handbook: How your students learn more when you teach less (Independent Thinking Series)

4.0 out of 5 stars Good idea...unfortunate title., 8 Jan 2014

If you want your students to learn more and you to work less, this book provides you with all the arguments and evidence you need to become a lazy, but outstanding, teacher. Gathered over ten years in the classroom, the tried-and-tested techniques shift the emphasis away from the teaching and onto the learning making your life so much easier in the process.
Are you working when everyone else seems to be doing something more exciting? Maybe your marking could be done by someone else. Are you fed up with planning lessons? Why not get the students to plan them for you. Besides, personalised learning shouldn't really involve thirty lesson plans!
This powerful book is packed full of easy-to-apply and highly effective strategies, strategies which Ofsted have rated as 'outstanding'. What's more, they all have the seal of approval of real students in real classrooms. In fact, many of them have been thought up by the students themselves, but that's why Jim Smith is called The Lazy Teacher. So, next time someone says to you 'get a life', this book will make it possible.
One point....ask any teacher if having read this book and put the procedures into practice would they consider themselves lazy. Be careful and be prepared to duck!

4.0 out of 5 stars Peace of mind for 3 computers in 1 package., 8 Jan 2014

A really good idea and a very reasonable price. I nearly renewed my subscription online (about 40.00/50.00), until my son told me just to buy a disc. Be careful what you get...do your research, and make sure you renew all computers at the same time, as the year starts from the moment the disc is inserted into the 1st computer. A pity they don't do a package for just 2 computers (maybe they do...I couldn't find it), but all round this is a good deal.

I bought this food dispensing toy for my niece's dog for Christmas. Firstly I hadn't realised this was so big, 19 x 13 x 13 cm. Made of high-strength plastic, it wobbles, spins and rolls and keet her (greedy!) dog entertain for a log time. It sorts the intelligent from the dumb.

Children of Winter
Children of Winter
by Berlie Doherty
Edition: Paperback

4.0 out of 5 stars 17th Century Survival story., 8 Jan 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: Children of Winter (Paperback)
Berlie Doherty née Hollingsworth, an English novelist, poet, playwright and screenwriter, is best known for children's books, for which she has twice won the Carnegie Medal. She has also written novels for adults, plays for theatre and radio, television series and libretti for children's opera.

Set in 1666 at the time of the Great Plague, this is the survival story of three children in Yorkhire where they have been 'evacuated' by their parents to a barn in winter near their village to avoid any disease. This is no action busting story, but a more slower paced tale giving a realistic insight into the time and the situation. With the three children of varying ages you get to experience their varieties of emotions from childish innocence in Dan, to the worries of Catherine, thrust into adult responsibilities.
This book is aimed at the just pre-teenager and being set in Yorkshire they might find difficulties with the older style dialect (lots of thees and thous). There is an element of modern family too, with the Tebbutts, though as this is written in the 80's the young reader might find still find them 'old fashioned'. That being said, in my opinion, it is a good read for the age bracket it is aimed for.
