Down on the Farm: A Tor.Com Original (Laundry Files)
Price: £0.36

5.0 out of 5 stars A must for those who love the Bob Howard series., 6 Jun 2013

If you've read the other books in this series (Jennifer Morgue, Atrocity Files etc) then this is a smart short story that adds to the legend that is Bob Howard. Stross's writing is as sharp as ever and the only compalint I've got is it is short, wish it had been a full length novel. can't wait till the next book comes out!!!

If you like Peter F Hamilton or Ian M Banks you'll like this galaxy spanning series of books, nothing majorly new or inventive, but a good read non the less

4.0 out of 5 stars Great follow up to the first book, leaves you hanging for the third book., 6 Jun 2013

Follows on from the first book directly, so you have to have read that, horrific in places, but a compelling read.

A real break from the polity series of books so if you have read those you may be disappointed, but I think this trilogy is easily on par.

Really disappointed with this cover, almost as if it wasn't designed for an iPhone 4/4s, plus it feels really cheap.

Constantly having to pussh the cover back on and the stand arm is always popping out!!!:-(

This review is from: Veiled Alliances (Kindle Edition)
Feels a little like he's trying to grind out a bit more money fro mthe Seven Suns series, but it's good enough to warrant a read if you have read those books, becuase it does give you some of the forestory which is interesting.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great story, grown up fantasy/ alternate earth fiction., 6 Jun 2013

Similar in principal to Stephen Kings Talisman story, but different enough to make it a compelling read.

If you like Stross you'll definitely like this, but even if you haven't read any of his other books I think you'll like it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Smart Fantasy, 1 Mar 2012
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
I eagerly awaited this release and I wasn't disappointed. The beginning does just sort of drop you in at the deep end, probably would have helped re-reading The Steel Remains again, but I very quickly got into it and was hooked by the 2nd Chapter. Richard K Morgan cleverly intertwines the 3 stories of Ringil (Warlock/ Master Swordsman), Egar (Barbarien/ Berserker, Super Soldier) and Archeth (Immortal half-alien, Emperors Advisor/ Spy), bulding up to a hardcore climax which still leaves you hanging with the promise of a 'quest' for a phantom city. The mix of Fantasy, Sci Fi and Action/ Adventure works on a number of levels. My personal favourite being the story behind the Kiriath, a race of elvin like semi-immortals with technology that so advanced it blurs the boundaries of magic and science. Then theres the borderline paranoid/ psychotic emperor, only a secondary character, but so well characterised he leaps out the page. Throw in some splatter fest fight scenes, black magic, a bit of sex, politics & religion and what more could you ask for? IF the book has any weaknesses its the that I'd like to have had more of the Archeth/ Emperor/ Helmsman storyline, but it's only a minor quibble. All in all a better, faster paced, denser plotted novel than The Steel Remains, looking forward to the next book with eager anticipation.
