5.0 out of 5 stars At last! A book worthy of the Lido, 7 Mar 2013
The Lido has long deserved the attentions of a good writer and guidebook. Nobody's fallen in love with it as devotedly and lyrically as Saikia since Baron Corvo. I want to go and see the sun rise from the beach there and reread his book and then explore every place he mentions and drink cocktails at the Excelsior and move on to the Hotel des Bains. This book may be short but it's a springboard to more good books, stories and adventures. Not a word of flotsam. I hope the Blue Guide series continues to expand along these lines (the Blue Guide Literary Companion to Venice is good too), and that Saikia carries on writing. I want more! Unleash those Lions of the Lido!

5.0 out of 5 stars My favourite book this year!, 16 Oct 2012

I loved this: I loved the story of the trip around London and the way the narrative branched out into tales (past Thames disasters on film, canal adventures, secret lives on the Thames) and reminiscences. Great structure, utterly readable - compulsively so in fact! Everyone who loves London should read it, sailors should make a space on their tiny boat bookshelves, and all readers of good prose should buy it.
