My Life in Japanese Art and Gardens: From Entrepreneur to Connoisseur
My Life in Japanese Art and Gardens: From Entrepreneur to Connoisseur
by Adachi Zenko
Edition: Hardcover
Price: £19.99

5.0 out of 5 stars A personal view, 28 April 2015

A true rags to riches story of one man. An autobiography. Starting in 1899 in Yasugi in Japan Many rare insights into life in early Japan. A businessman who became obsessed by one painting which he eventually owned. His collection of art grew and he finally built his museum and his world famous garden at his birthplace. His interests were (he says) money, women and art. The book explains why he built the gardens which surround his museum and what they represent. A fascinating book for anyone who has visited the museum and garden and which gives a rare view (for anyone who doesn't speak Japanese) into the very different and complex Japanese character (from the Western perspective). The book is well illustrated with personal photographs and colour photographs of the art in the museum and the garden. A 'must read' if you have visited! The garden has been rated as the 'best' Japanese stone garden.

1.0 out of 5 stars I would say don't waste your money but this ap is free, 19 Feb. 2015

Doesn't seem to work at all with a late model Samsung TV (all the bells and whistles) with either an Iphone 6 or Motorola G. I would say don't waste your money but this ap is free! I load the mirroring ap on the tv and it just sits there waiting for a connection from the phone(s) but whatever I do nothing happens. The television manual gives no clue. It seems nowadays these things either work or not, there are no options to configure. Oh, by the way both phone(s) and Samsung are running the latest versions of their firmware :-)

There are four parts to Office Suit Professional 7, but one is the user guide. The three other parts are a word processor. a spreadsheet program and a presentation program. There are no advertisments of course which is probably why it is called professional. As a word processor, it will accept both .docs and docx, the other modules will read and edit other Microsoft formats of Excel and Powerpoint. Apparently, it will also read pdfs and emails (which is very useful) For under £5, I really think it's a bargain. The actual versions of word supported are word 97-2003, word 2007 and word 2010. Other supported extensions are docm, rft, txt, odt, xls, xlsx, xlm, csv, cds, ppt, pptx, pps, ppsx, pptm, ppsm and cdp (according to the manual) And .pdf presumably for reading only.
It will also open .eml (email), log and zip files and 'attachments' (sic)
There is a more advanced version OfficeSuite Premium, which has 'different add one features' I've no idea what the price of this version is, but as it is subscription based, I wouldn't consider it

5.0 out of 5 stars This is a great game based on later models of space invaders (Galaxian) ..., 26 Oct. 2014

This is a great game based on later models of space invaders (Galaxian) You control a space ship. You can just move it left and right and up and down. The firing is automatic and depends on the power ups. It's easy to play. Really detailed graphics but fast on my Motorola G. There is a master spaceship at the end of the level which can be killed! I'm not going to tell you how, but you don't need too many 'power ups', position is important.
You need to reach the end of the first level three times before you can open the next level. I thought I'd finished but not yet!!

Kenro Negative File Pages 35mm Acetate Pack 100 KNF17
Kenro Negative File Pages 35mm Acetate Pack 100 KNF17
Offered by RK Photographic
Price: £39.65

5.0 out of 5 stars Reasonably priced, 7 Feb. 2013
These are better than paper based versions (glassine) They are stronger and more useful if you want to make contact strips (for Instance) The acetate is quite thin. Polythene ones would be better but a lot more expensive. These take negatives in sixes so theoretically you can store 42. However negatives are normally cut into fours. It is possible to get pages which store 4 negatives x 5 x 2, but again these are much more expensive. I understand that these pages are slightly larger than A4 so you need to buy Kenro negative files if you want to store them in books.
Delivery was quick from this supplier

These books are beautifully illustrated with dressed manequines (specially designed by the Institute), fragments of cloth, accessories and painting from the periods represented and shows some of the contents of the Kyoto Costume Institute [...] The Institute does not have it's own exhibition space. The historical garments shown in the books are exclusively western.

3.0 out of 5 stars American English again, 2 May 2011
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
In American English, this book also covers a lot of vocabulary as well. Probably useful for pronounciation, I suppose. It does seem very slow to start and each chapter covers a single tense with seperate chapters for negative and question forms. It is a pity there isn't a mixed revision chapter giving a little more variety. There are no illustations. I would say about half the book is taken up by vocabulary in the form of: 'use your dictionary to find the meaning of' .........(then follows a list of words). The words are then used in the grammar exercises.

3.0 out of 5 stars Too much American English, 2 May 2011
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
As the first reviewer has already said, there is quite a lot of American English, which requires explaining to an English language learner, although the discounted price of the book makes it cheap enough to buy two for one to one teaching.

I also bought, in the same series 'Basic English', although this bills itself as an English grammar book, a lot of the space is taken up with vocabulary, so really just one the volume would cover both, in my opinion. This book is also in American English!

Heroin Addiction Care and Control: The British System 1916-1984
Heroin Addiction Care and Control: The British System 1916-1984
by Bing Spear
Edition: Paperback

5.0 out of 5 stars Essential reading, 26 Feb. 2011
This book written by Henry Bryan "Bing" Spear, shows in very great detail how a few powerful medical people ('medical politics') manipulated legislation in the sixties which led to the setting up of the treatment centres in the uk and consequently, unfortunately, the rapid increase of drug addiction at that time. The calls by the doctors who had experience of treatment were ignored. The 'British System' was overthrown and replaced by a totally untested system of treatment centres and staff who had no previous experience of dealing with drug addicts or their particular problems. Little reseach hasd been done since those days into the effectiveness of the treatment centres until 1995. Is this book, Bing describes the 'treatment centre era' as a 'unmitigated disaster'.
This is not a simple book, the plot weaves a tricky path. But real life is complicated and real politics more so. This book is 310 pages long and densely packed with information. The references alone are 34 pages long.
Bing Spear was in the Drugs Branch from 1952-1968 and rose to become its chief inspector from 1977. He was an unsual person. Especially so for a civil servant! He took a very personal interest in the addicts he dealt with and new many of them by name, and sometimes went down to Picadilly to see the situation for himself. We have Judy Mott to thank for collecting the material after his death in 1995 and collating it so that it could be published in 2002. If you are researching into this period, it is essential reading. Or if you are just interested in the subject.
