4.0 out of 5 stars US Government policy yesterday & today, 22 May 2011
A serious work of history, Roy Meyer provides an insight into the mixture of cunning & coercion used by the US officials & institutions during the 19th century to impose their will on a people regarded as of lesser worth. Unlike Argentina, the USA did not opt for a single-minded policy of extermination of its native peoples but Roy Meyer's book shows how unscrupulous it was at a local and national level in stripping the Santee Sioux of their lands. While espousing high ideals, the US authorities are shown to have behaved in a very different manner. Such a mindset may help to understand some attitudes held by recent US administrations when dealing with peoples very different to themselves. No nations's history is without its blemishes and this book helps us to give us a fuller sense of US historical identity.

A Sand County Almanac and Sketches Here and There
A Sand County Almanac and Sketches Here and There
by Aldo Leopold
Edition: Paperback
Price: £7.05

5.0 out of 5 stars thOUGHTS ON Sand County Almanac, 4 April 2011
Anyone who loves the writings of Roger Deakin will love Sand County Almanac. Aldo Leopold is to British eyes a curious combination of backwoodsman, academic naturalist and gifted observer. His life and writings span the period from a mentality of unquestioned game hunting to the growth of a scientific enviromental movement. Fascinating as the mentality of hunter turned scientist & conservationist undoubtedly is, it is as a patient chronicler of the life of his chosen corner of the U.S. that Leopold excels. He has a wonderful eye, reflection born of years of patient observation and a sensitivity of language of the true writer who is born not made. Forget silly comparisons to Thoreau, this is a beautiful short book which deserves to be far better known on this side of the Atlantic.

5.0 out of 5 stars A fabulous cookbook for healthy eating, 16 July 2009
This is a unique cookbook in my experience: it links science in a precise yet accessible way to great cooking.
I'm not actually a prostate patient, simply someone drawn to attractive veg, fish & meat dishes. I might never have found this superb book if it hadn't been for The Food Proagramme on BBC Radio 4. I liked the sound of the recipes being sampled in the studio, roast tomato soup and a vegetable quiche using potato & sweet potato for the 'pastry'.
When my copy arrived I wanted to try out lots of dishes. I've made that quiche, several salads and other dishes and none has disappointed. It's taught me a lot, helped me reinforce a few good habits and acquire some more - I'm definitely eating more fish.
I hope this was the 1st of a series - books linking food to very particular scientific information.
