I loved Quantum Leap from the first episode. There's not much in the way of action. No bad language or true violence. No sex or nudity. No death defying stunts. No nail-biting cliff-hangers. Added up, this all usually means whatever it is, is very PC, watered-down, kid-friendly, and above all, missable TV. So what does this show have that puts it up there with the best? Well, while I don't want to sound a total wuss - Quantum Leap has real heart.

Now, I'm not talking about some preachy rubbish. This is not Highway to Heaven! What I'm talking about is characters you care about, stories that put them in true dilemmas, and how, given the chance, one man can make a difference and change the world, even if it's only one tiny, tiny piece of it at a time.

Quantum Leap is about a guy given the opportunity to meet people who have been wronged in some way and put things right. But he does this with a twist - it's sci-fi - he travels in time, never knowing who he'll meet, why or where. Every episode, he arrives somewhere, totally in the dark, and has to figure out what the problem is and how he can fix it. Only then can he move on, hopefully finding his way back to his own time and those who love him.

In the wrong hands, this could make for very saccharin viewing - thankfully the writers are accomplished enough to ensure that doesn't happen. I don't want to spoil anything, so I won't say what happens, but I deny anyone to watch the episode where Sam gets one of his main wishes granted and not find it touching. And that's only the start - where he ends up next and the ramifications will blow you away!

5.0 out of 5 stars A Dazzling Debut Novel, 17 Dec. 2008
This review is from: What If...? (Hardcover)
This really is a stunning work. I say work as it's so much more than just a story. Yes it's a great thriller but it's so much more too. As exciting as it is deep, it's one of those books that gives you that satisfied 'Ahhh' when you finally reach the end. Or, considering the ending here, maybe 'WOW' is more appropriate than 'Ahhh'.

It's the story of Mary, a journalist, who meets a man who appears capable of healing with just his hands. His exploits mesmerize the media and create a massive following. Obviously this rattles the powers that be! They set out to stop him. A battle of wits ensues, but quickly turns much darker. All the while, this 'miracle' worker's ability is questioned by those close to him and those struggling to stop him as, well, it's just not possible, is it? When his actions appear to be threatening national security, things really start hitting the fan, so to speak! Finally, it all comes to a head and it's revealed whether he can heal or is merely out to con millions from the gullible. And that delivers one of the best endings you'll find anywhere!

If you like getting your nose in a good thriller that whisks you away into its own world, you'll really enjoy this book. But if you like a book that doesn't only enthral, but makes you think about the world and life, you'll absolutely adore 'What if?'.

With the imagination and talent this writer has, I can't wait to see what he dreams up for his next work.
