A great film, a good transfer - far superior to the ordinary dvd. BUT WHY OH WHY AREN'T THERE ANY SUBTITLES??? All DVDs - especially Blue Ray- should be provided with them for oldies like me who struggle with their hearing. Yes, even with headphones!!
Please Amazon, will you clearly indicate if subtitles are provided on the disc?

I was a bit dubious about trying another scart lead for my digi-box to TV, having tried several with no discernible difference. This, however, has certainly improved the picture and colour quality. The lead is well made, a little heavy perhaps, but what I really like are the firm connections and the cable directly coming out of the connectors instead of being at an awkward angle. The product is very reasonably priced and there is no need to spend out on over- priced leads.

This review is from: The Satanic Rites of Dracula (DVD)
This is quite possibly the worst produced DVD that I have ever bought! It is 4:3 format, had a problem playing on 2 different TVs and my computer screen.
The picture is unsharp (even in its 'correct' format) the sound is dreadful and not properly synchronised with lip movement. And naturally, no subtitles.
It's a disgrace that discs like this come onto the market. There is no excuse!!
The film itself was ok, but the Dracula franchise was running out of steam. I generally enjoy the "Hammer" films.
Surely we can have a blu ray box set of all the Dracula films (including Brides of.....), correctly formatted and with subtitles (for the British Market)??

2.0 out of 5 stars therefore the quality is poor if you try to fill the TV screen, 7 May 2015

Disappointing. The two stars are for the fact that the disc is NOT anamorphic, therefore the quality is poor if you try to fill the TV screen, and there are no subtitles. This is a cheaply produced disc and not worthy of a great film. Only the blue ray is an option but the price is off- putting and it does not mention any subtitles.

1.0 out of 5 stars You've got to be joking!!!, 30 Dec. 2012
What an horrendous price!!! Whose trying to pull a fast one? This is supposed to be a budget release!!!!!!!! And the second hand price is a disgrace. I assume that this is the cycle released by ASV in the 80s. I admire John Lill very much, but there is no way I would pay such an over inflated price for this set.

5.0 out of 5 stars Super Haydn, 19 April 2012

This mp3 set has enabled me to start appreciating the genius of Haydn. Where on earth did he find the inspiration to compose such uplifting music? Haydn's level of invention and output was astonishing, moreso as he was writing 'to order' in his employment as court composer to the Esterharzys.
With so many symphonies to listen to, it's best mix up the order of listening otherwise you may have a sense of 'deja - vu' with some of the earlier works. Some symphonies are less interesting than others, but there isn't a 'bad' one among them. Apart from the well known, there are some absolute gems right through the whole oeuvre - number 88 is a particular favourite of mine with a typically infectious finale. In number 22 and the 'Hornsignal', the horn playing is an absolute delight -as it is all the way through. Other favourite symphonies are too numerous to mention!
My only caveat is that sometimes the strings can sound a little on the thin side, particularly in the opening of the 'London' Symphony after the slow introduction. Here the theme was very difficult to pick out until the music moved on. Sometimes the sound does sound recessed, but I think that this is a Nimbus trait (experienced in other recordings). These minor niggles do not spoil my listening enjoyment, which is done mostly on good quality earphones.
This set is a remarkable achievement and on MP3 is an absolute bargain. I have no hesitation in recommending this set as this is a cost effective way of exploring this wonderful music.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful Brahms, 20 Feb. 2011

I have never written a review about anything before, so here goes!
These discs are an absolute bargain! Here are two great piano concertos, with generous fillers, performed by one of my favourite pianists and the marvellous Concertegebow Orchestra under Haitink. Of course there is no one interpretation which is 'correct' and will suit everybody, but I think that Ashkenazy has the measure of both these concertos, combining strength and poetry allowing the romantic grandeur and sweep to emerge. I did have a musicassette of the D minor when it was first released in the early eighties so I was more than happy to replace it with the CD.
I also have the classic Gilels/Jochum versions which speak for themselves, but I prefer (only just) the Decca mainly because the recording is much warmer and richer sounding. Just listen to the glorious opening horn solo in the Bflat concerto. Both Haitink and Ashkenazy are 'in tune' with one another making for deeply satisfying interpretations of both these technically demanding concertos.
There is surprisingly little to choose interpretation-wise. Gilels is a little more expansive, especially in the first movement of the D minor where the presentation of the piano's main theme is more studied (none the worse for that). One disappointment of the DG recording occurs when the piano makes its appearance in the d minor after the orchestral ritornello, where the piano sounds too distant -almost reluctant to make an entry.
I have listened too many versions of the D minor (my favourite by a whisker). Curzon, Brendel and John Lill to name a few, all of which were excellent performances. I did hear a truly awful performance given by Radu Lupu, of all people, at a proms performance some years ago - sadly he seemed to be way past his prime.
To sum up - We can all listen and make our own observations about a particular recording and interpretation, but I have no hesitation about recommending these discs. I don't think anyone would be really disappointed, particularly at this price!!
