I hadn't seen The Charlatans live in years, and bought this on a whim, I really enjoyed it and they sound as fresh as ever. Highly recommended.

Pete Townshend's Classic Quadrophenia with Alfie Boe (CD & DVD)

4.0 out of 5 stars A Wonderful Listening Experience, 14 Feb. 2016
Not for the first time did Pete Townshend turn up clutching reels of demo tapes for the rest of The Who to translate into their latest Magnus Opus, and with Quadrophenia they raised their musicianship up another notch from Tommy.
The mere fact that Quadrophenia translates effortlessly into this orchestral version is testament to the genius of Pete Townshend's composing skills, each track lovingly recreating the chords and notations that are his signature.
Alfie Boe is Jimmy, hard to get your head around first, but this is a bleedin' opera as well innit! One reviewer excellently make the point that what you gain in the joys of listening to such an accomplished singing performance, you lose in bite and aggression, and as the whole point of Quadrophenia is the theme of aggression either with oneself or society and conformism, this ultimately cost one star.
I always preferred Tommy until I saw Quadrophenia live a couple of years back, then I revisited my old version and fell in love with it once more.
I thoroughly enjoyed this album, and yes, I still got teary eyed when I hear the climactic instrumental of the magnificent The Rock, and my overriding feeling at the end of this performance is just what an outstanding vocal performance Roger Daltrey gave on the original album.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Boss at his live best, 31 Dec. 2015

Excellent set of live shows from 1978 radio broadcasts; great value package and you really can't go wrong for the money.
Very good recording quality and a throwback to when audiences enjoyed gigs rather than filmed them.

5.0 out of 5 stars Turn the lights down, 13 Dec. 2015

This vinyl release is rarely off my turntable; this early release from AIR finds them at their most chilled, the whole album is perfect and is highly recommended. Moon Safari is basically an extension of this, not vice versa.

Possibly the greatest 3 part (occasionally 4) harmony group ever assembled; this excellent 4 CD repesents exceptional value and covers most of their combined and individual careers; if you love CSN(&Y) you will adore this box set.

5.0 out of 5 stars Before Autotune, There Was The Shaggs, 13 Dec. 2015

This review is from: Philosophy of the World (Audio CD)
Some albums grow legs on their cult status, and this is one of them. The story behind The Shaggs is as fascinating as their interpretation of music, as contained within this release.
Don't approach this as if you are about to hear a musical masterpiece, think of it as a time capsule as if it was your own attempts to record music on a cassette tape recorder when you can barely play a note. The difference is they had a father prepared to pay for professional studio time; except back in the 60s there was no autotune or computer software to make amends for the limited talent on display.
In that respect, its no worse than what passes for musical talent in the 21st century.

4.0 out of 5 stars There's more to Fairport Convention than Sandy Denny you know...., 13 Dec. 2015
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: Full House (Audio CD)
Post Liege and Leif, and without Sandy Denny and Ashley Hutchings, Fairport reconvened as a five piece, allowing a more traditional male four voice folk harmony to come to the fore on Full House, not only that but the musicianship seemed to step up a notch as Thompson, Swarbrick and new boy Pegg trade note for note licks on many of the tracks ably backed by Simon Nicol and Dave Mattacks. Some of Fairport's finest musical moments are on this album; Dirty Linen, Sloth, Sir Patrick Spen, Flatback Caper and Flowers of the Forest are the standout moments, in fact there is not a dull moment on the album. A fine mix of trad and rock.
The CD version also includes a mono and stereo release of their 1970 single Now Be Thankful, all in all I would highly recommend this as a must have alongside the Sandy Denny era output.

4.0 out of 5 stars I absolutely love this release, 10 July 2015

I absolutely love this release; the later LVE releases seem to get a bad rap as KS got more sample and digital led, especially his foray into opera. If you get this only for the third CD collaboration with Jörg Schaaf, it is mesmerising and as near to old school KS as you will get.
The other 2 CDs, well if you don't endless operatic voice samples and orchestra hits you won't mind them either. KDM gives his usual dismissive lecture of KS fans - he really hates those that still enjoy 70s KS - really, get over yourself KDM!

4.0 out of 5 stars great music of course and the dancing is spot on, 26 Oct. 2014
This review is from: Northern Soul [DVD] [2014] (DVD)
Enjoyable film, great music of course and the dancing is spot on; some of the dialogue was a bit hard to follow (and I'm from the North). This is life in the 70s (and remained until MTV in the 80s) and before internet-knowledge took over youth sub-cultures, and everything was word of mouth, especially music and fashion, and maybe that is the point of the film - either you became a somebody, or remained a nobody.
