5.0 out of 5 stars Profoundly insightful, honest and moving book that explores beneath the surface, 6 April 2015

This review is from: Out of Me (Kindle Edition)
This is a wonderful written book, and a very valuable one. Shaw begins with a brutally honest account of her post-natal depression, and she describes her time in a psychiatric unit in a powerfully disturbing and moving way. That is valuable in and of itself, but Shaw does not stop there. Rather she takes the next step and digs under the surface of her depression, to discover how the roots lay in her childhood experiences. Digging that deep is a hugely courageous thing to do. Sharing what she discovered with readers takes even more courageous. There are very few books about depression that go to this depth. This book describes a journey 'through' depression into a more conscious life, rather than a journey 'out of' depression and back to some kind of surface well-being. It is an inspiring book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic double thickness, proper yoga mat., 2 Mar. 2015

Expensive, but great. I normally place two yoga mats on top of each other to give my knees some support and comfort. I don't need to fiddle around doing that any more. This is a double thickness yoga mat. That means it has same consistency as standard yoga mat and doesn't stretch underneath you, or feel too 'spongy' to be unstable. It also comes with very useful carrying bag.

2.0 out of 5 stars Great for Pilates, but USELESS for yoga, 2 Mar. 2015
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This says it is a mat for Pilates AND yoga. It isn't. It is comfortable but far too stretchy for yoga. When you try to do 'warrior', or 'downward dog' the mat stretches out under you, leaving you very unstable.

Black Rainbow: How words healed me: my journey through depression
Black Rainbow: How words healed me: my journey through depression
by Rachel Kelly
Edition: Hardcover
Price: £13.59

5.0 out of 5 stars Insightful, brave and powerfully visceral, 3 Sept. 2014
Kelly describes the process of journeying through depression with vulnerability, power and insight.

I have no experience of the kind of rapid descent into depression experienced by Kelly, however this book gave me a powerfully embodied sense of what it must feel like to live through acute depression. In particular, I could sense the physical pain and the fear that Kelly felt as her world crumbled. I could sense Kelly's bewilderment and feeling of helplessness, as she struggled to make sense of what was happening. And, I got a sense of the fear, bewilderment and feelings of helplessness suffered by those who loved her.

One of the things that most impressed me was how Kelly described her descent into hell without portraying herself as a 'victim'. There is no 'poor me' in her writing and no attempt to manipulate the reader to 'feel sorry for her.'

Equally valuable is the way that Kelly describes the many avenues that helped her come through her bouts of depression. Once again her writing allowed me to feel what it was like to take those small steps... then to fall back... then to take another step.

In short, Kelly's book allowed me to accompany her through her depression in a way that expanded my understanding of what is involved. I am richer for that.

The Good Life: Wellbeing and the new science of altruism, selfishness and immorality
The Good Life: Wellbeing and the new science of altruism, selfishness and immorality
by Graham Music
Edition: Paperback
Price: £15.08

5.0 out of 5 stars An engaging, important and beautifully written book, 18 July 2014
This book offers a fascinating, informative and non-judgmental exploration of two interrelated questions: (1) Why are some people relatively altruistic and others less so? (2) How does our attitude towards others affect our own emotional well-being and physical health?

Graham Music addresses these questions by elucidating the interactions between our childhood experiences, social world, cultural environment and evolutionary heritage. As part of that endeavor he interweaves a wealth of research from fields as diverse as attachment theory, interpersonal neurobiology, endocrinology, social and moral psychology, game theory, primatology and evolutionary anthropology. Particularly impressive is that way that Music makes this research accessible and engaging, without glossing over the contradictions and subtleties of our complex nature.

I thoroughly recommend this book to anybody who is interested in what makes us who we are, as well as to all those who are concerned with fostering well-being.
