Magnificent desolation..., 9 Jan 2010
I first bought this on vinyl over 20 years ago, and more recently got the CD after it was re-issued. If you are going to own one Klaus Schulze album, this is the one to get. As a previous reviewer has said, the music is timeless and sounds like it could have been recorded this year instead of 1977 (the era of wooden clad analogue synths and miles of cables). Strangely, the back of the album/CD appears to show individualy titled tracks, but make no mistake, what you get here are two 'sides' e.g. two 25 minute pieces of sublime atmospheric electronic music. Mirage is subtitled 'An Electronic Winter Landscape'. Never was an album title so accurate! The work is haunting and seems to conjur up all manner of possible mental images of a cold abandoned, even post apocalyptic landscape. The perfect soundtrack to an isolated journey through snow and ice, or open countryside. A much overused expression, but this really is the perfect sountrack for a movie that was never made. Just listen, close your eyes and let your mind wander.
