2.0 out of 5 stars Not bad, but not great either, 19 Nov 2004
This review is from: Off By One [Us Import] (Audio CD)
A friend reccommended that I listen to 'On My Way', and I instantly loved it. After hearing that one song I bought this album, but was a bit dissapointed to be honest.
What im going to say is that they clearly have talent, and can hear a good hook when they get one, but this is by no means the great album the other reviews have made it out to be.
The songs are generally very over produced, with layers of synth, guitar harmonies or various effects to try fill them out at dull moments. Also the vocal harmonies are very over done and every chorus has the same 3rd harmonies on it. This means all the songs end up sounding very similar.
Its not all bad. There are a few good songs on here, and every song definitly has its moments, its just that the lyrics which mainly let the songs down. Prime example is 'High school', which has a great catchy melody etc. but is let down by the terrible lyrics. Many pop artists out there are doing better. Its like no thought has gone into them, and that theyre only purpose is to rhyme.
Im a bit confused about the 'cover' of Torn. Everyone is saying that it's a cover, however if you look in the album sleeve, it credits 'Off By One' as having written it! So bit confused about that one, but it seems that it's not a cover afterall!
So in short, if you're looking for a poppy record with catchy melodies etc you can stick with this, but if you're looking for a well thought out meaningful record you might want to check out some other bands.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great album, seriously, 19 Nov 2004
This review is from: Take This to Your Grave (Audio CD)
Every song on this album is fantastic. Not a single track that you'd want to skip.
The songs are technically sound, filled with guitar harmonies and underlying riffs, but still remains amazingly original. The vocals have excellent harmonies too, and often two part vocals doing crazy things keep you interested.
The lyrics to the songs are clever and well thought out, but what is really amazing is patrick (frontman's) singing voice. He is one of the best pop-punk vocalists ive heard in a long time. Every song has a new hook or harmony to keep you listening.
The album's only weak point is that the songs are all very similar sounding, and that the album is a little short, but when they're produced such a punchy, catchy, to-the-point record, what else can i do but give them 5 stars.
Good job Fall Out Boy. I think any pop-punk or even emo fans should definitly check this out.
