This is a brilliant book. A clear and powerful explanation of the power structures which control society and the mechanisms which perpetuate them and prevent changes in the balance of real power from happening.
This is a must read for anyone who cares about the world we live in and why some things, despite being clearly unfair, never go away.

Sumptuous jazz fused with north African and Spanish influences. Some real catchy tunes (particularly the first 4 or 5) as well as some great grooves to have in the background to set a cool mood.

5.0 out of 5 stars A must read for football historians and tactic geeks, 3 May 2016

A must read for football historians and tactic geeks. Inverting the Pyramid takes us through the evolution of football tactics in a very compelling way - a very difficult accomplishment. Personally, I found it particularly fascinating the way in which the British game evolved along different lines to the continental one.
I thoroughly enjoyed this insightful book from an author with an extremely deep knowledge of the game. I can't wait to read it again!

The Year I Became a Nomad: A Journey through Asia on a Quest for Freedom, Love and Happiness
Price: £4.99

5.0 out of 5 stars Taken along on an adventure, 15 Sept. 2015
The Year I Became a Nomad tells the delightful story of one man's personal journey, escaping from the life of the guy with a comfortable office job in search of discovery, exploration, new experiences and, ultimately some deeper meaning.
I found the style of writing makes for pleasant reading and immediately immersed me in the author's world. I loved to read about the different people, countries and cultures. Enjoyably, the journey goes off in unforeseen directions and left me feeling very envious! I smiled a lot reading this book.
I would recommend this to anyone who loves travel writing as well as anyone who likes to ask themselves questions about what the point of being here at all is!

5.0 out of 5 stars Great introduction plus much more, 21 July 2014

This is one of those rare and wonderful books that offers a whole lot more than you expect it to. I was merely hoping to get a general overview of what the Raspberry Pi is and what it can do and this book does this very clearly and succinctly, assuming no prior knowledge but without patronising the reader. What it also does is get you up and running very quickly with using Linux commands, programming in Python and more besides.
By providing numerous links to additional resources, it is a lovely introduction to the whole Raspberry Pi community. This is definitely among the best Dummies books I have bought.

4.0 out of 5 stars Original, interesting, informative and enjoyable, 2 July 2014

This book clarifies the concept of psychopathy in a way which debunks the typical understanding of this word (we usually associate psychopath with some scary, sadistic criminal). It also serves as a self-help guide to gaining greater self-confidence often by challenging many typical assumptions we make in day-to-day life and contrasting them with the mindset of a psychopathic personality.

My main criticism is the overly laddish, matey and "jokey" style in which it is written, where serious points are punctuated by irritating asides which I ended up just skipping. There are some amusing anecdotes which illustrate important points as well which are fine, but it is the asides which I found tedious.

But nevertheless, although these asides get in the way of reading, I still found this book very engaging.

How to be Idle

5.0 out of 5 stars Well written challenge to the modern mind set, 13 Oct. 2010
This review is from: How to be Idle (Paperback)
This is a fantastically enjoyable and sumptuous read that rightly challenges the assumptions which have brought about the kind of miserable state of affairs that we have created for ourselves: crass materialism has turned us into wage slaves and we cheer ourselves up with a vacuous celebrity culture. All the while we have simply forgotten the beauty of being free-spirited and enjoying life in a spontaneous way. My comments sound heavy going/dreary, but Tom Hodgkinson's skill is in addressing matters with a light touch without losing depth of thought. Well done!

5.0 out of 5 stars Beautiful, intelligent and deeply touching, 19 Dec. 2009

"Taare zameen par" (Stars on Earth) tells the story of a wonderfully imaginative, creative, sweet boy whose undetected dyslexia leaves him suffering the wrath of hostile parents and teachers, leaving him on the brink of complete psychological breakdown. It is only when a sensitive temporary art teacher enters his life that his tormented life is effectively saved. Without giving too much away, this film is made with great depth and sensitivity and it shines a light on an all-too-familiar trait of Indian society (and of others, of course) and challenges the obsession which parents might have of forcing children to a mould of their own making in the obsessive pursuit of "success" while completely ignoring the individual and unique character, abilities and needs of their child. Both heart-wrenching and heart-warming, it is hard to imagine anyone not liking this film - excellent!

The Meaning of Life: A Very Short Introduction (Very Short Introductions)
The Meaning of Life: A Very Short Introduction (Very Short Introductions)

5.0 out of 5 stars Thoroughly engaging and beautifully succinct, 1 Sept. 2009
Terry Eagleton writes in a very readable style conveying complex, deep issues in a way that is very accessible. Highly intelligent, clever and witty, this Very Short Introduction to arguably the biggest of all questions does an amazing job of answering it, if "answering" is the right word. Eagleton remains credible throughout, never resting on easy standpoints and never afraid to either praise or criticise different philosophies and movements for their pros and cons, and he never slips into simplistic reductionist explanations. Highly recommended!

5.0 out of 5 stars A fabulous concept well done, 30 Dec. 2008
This is a fantastic way to learn Italian vocabulary. Instead of a tedious list of words, the clear and colourful pictures really bring the words to life and definitely aid the learning process. I am a graduate in Italian language, a fluent speaker for over 20 years, and yet this book has really helped me consolidate vocabulary on anything from the names of all the tools in my toolbox (I can never remember these well in Italian) to the names of different professions, different foods, clothing and architectural terminologies - it's filled in all the gaps when I normally say: come si dice? My wife is a beginner in Italian and we have both found it to be very helpful.
