5.0 out of 5 stars Outstanding, 17 Nov. 2004
This review is from: Half-Life 2 (DVD ROM) (Video Game)
I got HL2 yesterday and it is better than I could have hoped for. I will not give away any spoilers, but the story so far is amazing. The graphics are stunning and the physics are mind blowing. Everything in the enviroment can be thrown or interacted with. And it's not just for show, it's part of the gameplay. The voice acting is superb and the sound effects & music are top notch. This game is absolutly dripping with atmosphere. The whole gameworld reeks of opression, with combine soldiers on every corner, flying cameras buzzing around you scanning you taking photos and big screens telling you how well off you are not having to think for yourself, and how the state 'cares' about everyone. And it's all the small details that really make the world come to live. You belive you are in a police state. It is a world of misery and opression. And I did not have any trouble activating HL2 with steam, and that was on the day it came out, so hats off to valve for a good job there. I have not encountered any bugs either. This game has been tested within an inch of it's life and it really shows. The game is also very stable. I have had no problems with crashing or frame rate drops. If you do have these kind of problems you should make sure all drivers are up to date and also your graphics card is up to spec. This really is one of those games that you want to play as the developer intended. If you needed an excuse to upgrade then HL2 is surly it. If you are a gamer, you need this game. It is a masterpiece of computer programing & it shows what is possible with games and really is a work of art. Like the original HL, this sequel has move the bar up SO far. All games from now on must compete, and that can only be a good thing for us gamers.

5.0 out of 5 stars An essential for your metal collection, 4 Nov. 2004
This review is from: Scum (Audio CD)
If you you love metal and don't own this you should be ashamed of yourself. The face of extreme music would be very different if this album had not been made. This is grind that will split you in half, but there is melody and structure here to. Along with very political lyrics, this is a masterpiece of metal.

5.0 out of 5 stars Old school shocker, 23 Sept. 2004
This review is from: Doom 3 (PC) (Video Game)
I see that some people have given Doom 3 poor reviews. Well I love it and here's why. First of all doom 3 is a work of art, there's no two way's about it. It has the most polished and stunning graphics engine ever made. And there are no cracks in the seams. No clipping or dodgy textures anywhere. I suppose this is what happens when you don't have a publisher breathing down your neck to get the game out the door. Now to the gameplay. If you are expecting it to be revolutionary, then you will be dissapointed. If you are expecting a scary, fun and just downright enjoyable game you will love it. It throws out all the conventions that have been built up over the years. No alt fire, no branching story paths and no open ended gameplay. But what it does, it does in style. It is a story driven game and heavely scripted. This does affect the replay value, but the game is so visceral and dark that this really does not matter. It's all about detail. Every pad and journal you find can be downloaded into your PDA, and it fills in a lot of back story for everyone you meet. Every charactor has SO much back story that you really feel they have a life outside the game. And every NPC charactor you meet in the game is different. There's no re-using charactor models anywhere. And the sound is superb. Chilling and satisfying. This all means you are immersed in the game like a great horror movie. Although I said replay value is not high, you will want to, and when you do you will notice all sorts of little things you missed the first time through. All in all Doom 3 is FUN. Scary, bloody fun. And is that not what games are ment to be about? So if by some chance you have not bought this yet, take the plunge. Turn out the lights, turn up the sound and get ready for the ride of your life.

5.0 out of 5 stars A doom classic, 7 Sept. 2004
This review is from: Master Of Reality (Audio CD)
What a 1,2,3 punch Black Sabbath delivered with 'Black Sabbath', 'Paranoid' and then this, 'Masters Of Reality' I don't know if I could choose a best Sabbath album with Ozzy, when he left I think Sabbath died, but 'Masters Of Reality' is right up there. From 'Sweet Leaf' to 'Orchid' this is prime Doom of the highest order. The riffs and amazing bass lines weave together with Ozzy's voice to create a soundscape that was totaly unique at the time and still sound as fresh today as it ever did. Today the natural progression of Sabbaths music is kept alive in the Doom Metal scene with bands like 'Planet Caravan', 'St Vitius', 'The Hidden Hand', 'The Possesed' and 'Cathedral' to name but a few. Some people say that trhe Seattle scene was inluenced by Sabbath and that may be true, but it is the monster Doom laiden riffs of the bands I mentioned that are real Doom. I was not around when Sabbath came out and I was into the Doom bands I mentioned above first. It was them that made me seek out Balck Sabbath and if there is any Sabbath fan out there who was into them at the time and has not heard the above mentiond bands I highly reccomend that you do. The 'Hidden Hand - Divine Propaganda' and 'Cathedral - A Serpants Gold' are two great places to start. Thank you Ozzy, you changed the way heavy music was played forever.

5.0 out of 5 stars Keeping the sabbath dream alive?, 5 Aug. 2004
This review is from: The Serpent's Gold (Audio CD)
Excuse the corny title for this review, but it is true. If Black Sabbath ever got back together with Ozzy and wrote new stuff, this is what they would have to compete with. Well this and Wino's work of course. This is prime doom. Slow, heavy and groovy. The first CD is a best of the earache years. Ok, so it does miss out on quite a few classics, why there is only one track from Caravan Beyond Redemption & Supernatural Birth Machine I don't know, but this is a great place to start if like me, you missed out on Cathedral the first time round. There is not a weak track on the wholoe album. It is just great song after great song. The second cd has demos, unrealesed tracks and live stuff. The Old Oak tree is a lost classic that was written for The Etherial Mirror, but did not end up on the album. It is an absolute peach of a song. Since I got this I have started getting all the albums. I am hooked and if you love doom, you will aswell. I would also recommend Spirit Caravan, St Vitus, The Hidden Hand as Wino is a true genius, as well as The Obssesed and Pentagram. So if you are sick of the same old same old, do youself a favour and get this CD. It will open your mind to a whole other world od music and you will wonder why you did'nt do so sooner.

With all the hype I steered clear of this band until now, and today I took the plunge and bought it. Well what was I missing? Unfortunatly not very much at all. It's ok. Ok vocals, ok melodies and ok lyrics. But there is definitely something missing here. I can't really put my finger on it, but this album just leaves you cold. Try the new Charlatans album or even the new Ash disc, but if you don't have this already you really are not missing out on anything. Pity.

5.0 out of 5 stars Shoot To Thrill, 22 May 2004
This is the best, most complete and strongest live album AC/DC have ever put to disc. The band are on fire all the way through and it is imposible to pick a favourite track. Every single note that is played is a classic. Angus is one hell of a guitarist and is on blistering form here and Brian Johnston's vocal performance is top class aswell. Along with all the classics like Back In Black, Dirty Deeds, Whole Lotta Rosie and Let Their Be Rock, we also get gems like The Jack, Jailbreak and T.N.T. There are 23 tracks in all and if you are a fan and you don't already have this album, man, what are you waiting for! If you are new to AC/DC then this is a great place to start. It gives you an overview of their work, right back to the first album High Voltage. And every single track is as powerfull today as it ever was. For some reason it is considered 'uncool' to listen to AC/DC these days, but if you love rock music and you are listening to The Darkness or Amplifier, then go back to where it all began, and get down with the mighty AC/DC. The DVD concert Stiff Upper Lip also comes highly recommended.

4.0 out of 5 stars A great return to form, 11 May 2004
After the Nu-Metalish 'Supercharger', I did not hold out too much hope in this new Machine Head album, but they seem to have found a new burst of energy and heaviness for this release. 'Imperium' gets the album off to a great start. The crushing wall of guitar sound is here, as heavy as they have ever been, but with a lot of intricate little lead lines and harmonics. The song stuctures are more complex this time aswell. But the riffs stand out and are as good as they have ever been on any Machine Head album. Hi-lights are 'Left Unfinished', In The Presence Of My Enemies' and 'Vim'. All are classic Machine Head. 'Bite The Bullet' and 'All Falls Down' have shades of Supercharger (the album) in them, but are still strong efforts. The album closes with the longest song on the album, 'Decend The Shades Of Night'. Clocking in at 7 and a half mins long, it starts with (gasp) a classical accoustic part and then builds up, getting heavier all the time. This track has some of the best guitar work on the entire album, amazing solo's, and then fades out with the classical accoustic riff. Long term fans will already have bought this album, but if you are new to Machine Head and love heavy, but melodic music then look no further. Great Stuff.

5.0 out of 5 stars Amazing, 27 April 2004
This review is from: Far Cry (PC) (Video Game)
The first thing I want to say is that Far Cry does NOT run on the HalfLife 2 game engine. They built the Cryengine, as it is called, from theground up. Brand new. So, on to the game. Every review in every magazineor internet site have 90% or higher for this game. And they are not wrong. This is a stunner. The A.I. is top class and the graphics are to die for.The gameplay is top class also. For the first time in a FPS, thebinoculars ar essential. They put the enemys on your mini map when youspot them with the bins. I cannot recomend this game enough. If youconsider yourself a PC gamer, you will already have this game, but if youdon't, get it now. Trust me on this. You will not be disapointed. And withDoom 3, Half Life 2 and Thief 3 just round the corner, this is the yearthat PC games make the quantam leap, as the original Half Life did in '98.Superb.

Only a few words here. I first heard this on the free terrorizer mag CD as well. This is metal of the highest caliber. Brutal, technical guitar work, amazing gutteral vocals and blast beats galore. But with very high production values. Anata are a breath of fresh, or should I say rotting fetid, air and are a band that will be around for a while. Anata are one of the best bands on the Earache record label at the moment, and if you love metal, you will love this.
