Sorry but this doesn't do it for me. There is no story whatsoever. The physical quality of the book is good I suppose, and it is quite colourful. The text does not always stand out clearly either, which doesn't help when I try to point out words to my daughter (I point at the words as I read them - the idea being to help her associate the words I say with the words on the page).

As with Iron Man 3 the plot is fairly strong but fails in execution. The trailer had me slightly worried as the line about the elves being 'an evil from before time' of whatever it was came across as totally generic and naff. But it turns out they are just evil elves from a different dimension out for revenge. Pretty straightforward plot devise. Not exciting but not annoying either. Well, within the context of super hero movies.

The humour is slightly too much but it does not grate anywhere near as much as it did in Iron Man 3. Marvel has done well in terms of being faithful to the original characters and that continues here. Unfortunately it is starting to feel like they are churning out movie after movie not because they want to tell a story but because they want the franchise to continue. We shall see. Looks like the humour angle will continue in Guardians of the Galaxy, but it might be appropriate for that movie. Trailer seemed ok.

2.0 out of 5 stars A disappointment, 23 Dec 2013
This review is from: Kick-Ass 2 [DVD] [2013] (DVD)
I somewhat enjoyed this movie but, having seen it, concede that I could happily have gone without. It is no where near as witty and fresh as the first movie. To an extent that is inevitable. The guilty pleasure of hearing the 'c word' from an eleven year old cannot be repeated as a) it was done in the first movie, and b) hit girl is now fifteen.

The problems with this movie are:

- lacks novelty value second time around - inevitable unless they had decided to take a completely different turn.
- dialogue is terrible. It's unnatural and serves only to move the characters along from one action scene to the other.
- Not very funny. There are one or three laugh out loud moments and a handful of mildly funny scenes. This movie is about as violent as the first one but without the mirth to lighten things up it becomes a bit nihilistic.
- character motivations are unclear and unconvincing.

The best thing about the movie is the fight scenes, which are quite thrilling and well directed.

All in all, if you liked the first one then rent the second one. If you thought the first one was only ok then don't bother with this one.

This is a review of all 6 books in the Farseer saga.

It is remarkable that Robin Hobb has managed to write 6 books with which I can find hardly any fault. The books are admittedly quite slow in places (especially 'the golden fool')and it does not have the large set piece battles of the "a song of fire and ice" books (i.e. "Game of Thrones") by George R.R.Martin. But there is no filler; at no point did I find the books too long.

The exclusive focus on the main character Fitz may bore some, the surprise elements of Martin's books, when you don't know who is going to die next, is absent. It does perhaps get a bit tiresome that Fitz gets beaten up so much throughout the series and it's nice that there is a happy ending for him.

All in all probably the best set of fantasy novels of their kind, and possibly just one of the best set of novels, that I have read.

I should point out that the series needs to be read in order. Otherwise it is unlikely to captivate you.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great movie, 26 Nov 2013
This review is from: The Wolverine [Blu-ray] (Blu-ray)
I enjoyed this movie a great deal. The best thing about it is the charismatic Jackman and the two female leads, with whom he has great chemistry. Both women match their comic book equivalents quite well. I had heard rumours about a weak ending, and in particular the rubbish 'Lady Viper' character. It is true that including Lady Viper into the movie adds absolutely nothing, but the upside is that she probably has less than 10 minutes of movie time. I disagree with those who say that the ending was weak (other than Lady Viper's limited role in it); it was a natural way for the story to end and whilst underwhelming perhaps it did not detract from the earlier parts of the movie.

What I did find disappointing, however, was the action scenes. The fights are almost totally bloodless. I'm not calling for all out gore, no need for limbs to fly, but a nod towards realism would have been nice. That apart, the fight choreography is only ok. In a movie with a reasonable amount of martial arts this is quite disappointing. The ninjas are fairly rubbish - a body flip ever three paces does not a ninja make (watch Ninja Assassin to see how it's done properly)

All in all, this movie should be enjoyed by most Wolverine fans.

This is not a stand alone volume and in order to appreciate it you need to have read earlier volumes. In particular:

X-men Messiah complex
X-force 1-4

You can get away with not reading the Cable volumes in my opinion.

That out of the way, this is a satisfying and action packed resolution to the story about 'Hope', the first mutant born since the events of 'House of M' (also a great book). It did not quite blow me away, as the fantastic 'messiah complex' volume did, but it is very good.

So why not 4 or 5 stars? Well, would I read it again? Yes. More than once? No.

Given the ridiculously low price you can't really expect much. The cable works perfectly ok. I bought it to connect my smartv to the internet, as the wifi is too slow (and also my laptop, which as it runs vista can't cope with wifi). Unfortunately the 'tongue' that snaps the cable into position broke off at both ends, which I put down to poor build quality. The cable still works but you have to be careful as it falls out of the Tv/laptop easily.

2.0 out of 5 stars might make a good movie, 19 Jun 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This is an action packed book and some of the visuals are great. I think that it could form the basis of a good movie. Problems with the book are;

- back story of the conflict in 'the source' not explained very well
- poorly written in places. It can be hard to follow what is going on. On occasion it appears as if the author has mixed up the powers of the characters.
- hard to feel much sympathy with the main character. Through his idiocy lots of people get killed.
- As somebody else pointed out, generally poor character development.

It is also an extremely violent book which might make it difficult to adapt as a movie for an appropriate market.

All that said, quite an easy and enjoyable read if you are into this kind of thing.

This was only moderately enjoyable. The level of violence is extreme but will have no novelty value to you if you have read other MAX (or Vertigo for that matter) titles.

It is quite a well written book but I didn't find the plot very interesting. Also, the art work isn't my cup of tea. Some might find it elegant; I found it flat.
