Not what was expected, as the Amazon promotion box gave me too little information. A short synopsis would help buyers next time.

These remarkable poems show some schoolgirls' talents in the period ended 1938 (several were too steeped in religious imagery for my taste).

3.0 out of 5 stars A wasted opportunity, Mr Author, 31 Oct. 2015

Not for me I'm afraid — the author really needs to brush up on proper English (yup, investing in excellent 'Strunk and White'; 'William Zinsser).

The first page, when a writer needs to grab a reader and ensnare him/her, was dreadful. How many 'likes" in an paragraph shriek: this guy needs a seasoned editor. The style put me off: it was as if the author would next burst out into — "Hi, dude - you gonna lerv this bit, huh! " I exaggerate a little, but, for the sake of goodwill — maybe he'd dropped the wrong fungi into his omelette? — I soldiered on for a chapter or two, then gave up.

What a pity. This book could have advised on fascinating and vital subjects in accessible, pleasing ways, perhaps with something new to add to the fine books that broadly cover his book's title themes… written by Ronald Tobias.

3.0 out of 5 stars B S R, 31 Oct. 2015

This does have some merit: good tips and useful warnings.

Overall I was disappointed, however, when I compare it with other 'how to' books I use. This is due in part to rambling layout in some sections. I would respectfully suggest > Introduction topics + crisp bullet points + summing up.

An editor could ensure each phrase and sentence pulls its weight. Cut out waffle. In my view, guidance that novice writers need for best results is in this format — brief, specific and relevant ["B S R"]. If this sounds 'too sparse or dry', then so be it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Desktop friend, 8 Dec. 2010
As a novice writer, in 1999 I bought my first copy of 'On Writing Well' and discovered a real gem.

So straightforward and sensible, this book 'cuts to the chase' as it brings to the reader the nuts and bolts of writing non-fiction in a delightful manner. I note that a revised [35th] edition will be published in 2011.

Not only have I re-read my copy several times, I have recently bought copies for friends and family to let them share in practical advice the author has put across with such flair and wit. I strongly recommend 'On Writing Well' together with the superb companion book: ' The Elements of Style' by W Strunk and E B White.
