Mark Nelson's book is a surprise and a delight. Yes, 28 July 2014
Mark Nelson's book is a surprise and a delight. Yes, and its all about s***. It is a fascinating life story of an urban boy who didn't want to be a doctor. As a student he found himself in Arizona shovelling s***. This experience led him on a life-long quest to understand our planet, its people and its system - the biosphere. He eschewed reductionist and embraced a holistic approach which turned him part agriculturist, part botanist, part engineer. His journey includes spending 2 years in an enclosed ecological system Biosphere 2 and taking a late Ph.D which took experts from several academic disciplines for approval. This journey is told in a readable and even light-hearted way which engages and entertains. The last section of the book shows his achievements, the building of waste-water gardens around the world in every continent, in the relative safety of Australia and the wilds of Iraq. this is an optimistic story yet Mark offers a caution. Get the technology right and be sure to maintain it. Read this book. It will challenge preconceptions and reveal that almost everything is possible if you think hard enough.
