The Snow People
The Snow People
by Marie Herbert
Edition: Hardcover

5.0 out of 5 stars Brilliant book, 14 Sept. 2010
This review is from: The Snow People (Hardcover)
A brilliant and rivetting account of a woman's entirely voluntary stay in icy, treacherous and hugely uncomfortable Greenland. A remarkable woman, a remarkable book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Surprisingly rivetting, 14 Sept. 2010
As this is no more than an account of a couple's struggle to make a success of selling wine from market stalls, it is surprisingly rivetting.
It is well written, and a very entertaining read.

4.0 out of 5 stars Technically beautifully played, 14 Sept. 2010
This is all very smoothly and beautifully played, without fault, exactly as written.
My only criticism is that it lacks the fire and brimstone that others have produced, but if you want a recording that demonstrates how to play it exactly as written, this is it.

4.0 out of 5 stars Rivetting read, 14 Sept. 2010
How this man and his business partners pulled this venture off is still a mystery to me - but they did it. They encountered a huge number of setbacks that would have seen most off - me certainly - but they stuck it out and won through.
Very well written account of the enterprise, well worth a read. This is one of those "can't put it down' books.

4.0 out of 5 stars great adventure non-fiction, 14 Sept. 2010
This man is crazy - he'll surely be killed well before old age gets him.
A gripping account of a man's working life, where he walks into dangerous situations knowing full well how dangerous they are.
Great to read - I won't be applying for a job with him.

3.0 out of 5 stars Fiction or non-fiction??, 14 Sept. 2010
Entertaining and fun to read, but I find it hard to believe that it is all entirely fact. Serge Bastarde is surely either a fictional character, or a genuine real-life person who has had his antics exaggerated somewhat. Just doesn't ring true.

Just a Little Run Around the World: 5 Years, 3 Packs of Wolves and 53 Pairs of Shoes: 5 Years, 29 Marriage Proposals and 53 Pairs of Shoes
by Rosie Swale-Pope
Edition: Paperback
Price: £7.49

5.0 out of 5 stars Just a Little Run Around The World, 15 Dec. 2009
This is one of the best and most gripping books I have ever read. I was totally hooked from the first few pages. It is a quite incredible story of a superhuman achievement.
Rosie never boasts about her resilience and toughness, or gives any impression that she is aware how amazing her run was, or how unique she is - a mix of being superlatively caring and compassionate, and tough as nails. It is filled with modesty, but she can't ever get away from the enormity of the undertaking.
How she survived it I'll never know.

4.0 out of 5 stars Three ways to capsize a boat, 15 Dec. 2009
A very well written book, in which the author at no time tries to impress us as to his own qualities, never hiding his potential inadequacies. He gives a graphic, gripping account of the hardships and dangers involved in sailing a small boat on a wild ocean.
An excellent read.
