Having seen lots of Chinese clone Lego makers release gun kits, I wanted to see how the real Danish Brick coped with similar treatment. Lego would never, ever make an official model gun set, but Jack Streat's book is the next best thing. This book has the parts count, instructions and information on the workings of 4 influential firearms.

The book itself is very well written and has a sensible number of steps in the instructions. Unfortunately the pages are in black and white, which produces two problems: the colours are all the same (well, red is slightly lighter grey), and the joins can be very hard to see as almost all parts are black. Having said that, the author knew about these issues when writing the book and has tried very hard to lessen the effect, both in the text and the way the guns take shape. Be warned though - you'll need good eyesight and your wits about you to get it right first time.

I bought this for the gun on the front - the AK-47. OK, this version is the AK-74U, but it's basically the same thing with a shorter barrel and folding stock. What was most impressive was not the 11-round magazine, the surprisingly good accuracy, nor the way the firing mechanism actually works (lots of elastic bands power these things, in case you're wondering, and no, the AK is not semi-automatic). The really impressive bit is the overall design skill, and how the Lego pieces have been chosen to assemble a structurally coherent shape. Cleverly placed technic bars, pins and rods create a strong but lightweight structure which can withstand the large tensions inherent in the firing mechanism and the reloading magazine. It is this that singles out Jack Streat as a truly impressive builder. Hard to believe he wrote this when he was 18.

Finally, unless you have a huge collection of black technic parts, getting everything via the ubiquitous BrickLink is likely to cost over £100 for the bigger guns. However, when built they fire 1x4 bricks at quite a punch. I use orange bricks so I can find them next to the dents in the furniture. Oops...

Already an institution. Utterly rubbish, of course. Several layers of self mockery, some intentional. Excellent for drinking games.

No lasers.

5.0 out of 5 stars Perfect black humour, unfortunately for real, 12 Nov. 2014

Great copy of a 1960s post-apocalypse survival guide. Being British, the kettle is listed as one of the first items to take into the bunker. Reading between the lines, the futility of trying to survive any barrage of MegaTonnage is immediately apparent, and serves as a reminder of how fragile those heady days of the Cold War were. The 1970s 'Protect and Survive' films were based on updates of this book.

Don't live in a bungalow. Or flats. Or have windows.

5.0 out of 5 stars A good head, 12 Nov. 2014

I've always wanted a skull for my desk: breaks the ice at parties, and looks weird. This example seemed very lifelike from the photos, although it is expensive. The skull itself is a good weight, is about the size of a teenager's head, and is painted in a tan-pink shade. The jaw is not an exact fit but this actually enhances its appearance. The skull has certainly fulfilled its purpose and is a notable object add to the collection in the living room.

For the record, pool ball gobstoppers make excellent eyes.

5.0 out of 5 stars Tiny but mighty, 12 Nov. 2014

This was bought to fit in the front of a car stereo fascia. It's so small it looks like part of the design. The 16GB version, at time of writing, was under £6 so was excellent value. The USB connection is physically quite stiff, which when combined with the small size does require strong fingers. This was an advantage for sticking in the stereo.

So happy, we bought two.

5.0 out of 5 stars Surprisingly Relaxing, 12 Nov. 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
I admit to originally buying this as a joke, after having a particularly annoying day. Reading the customer reviews suggested that this CD was actually quite good, and... well, it is. The recording came out in about 1999 and consists of a single 59 minute track of humpback calls with a bit of sea noise and the occasional gull, boat bell and foghorn. There are a few rather obvious jumps between recordings, and I suppose a real purist would argue that the sea noises are not whale, but everyone else will get this CD to listen to something relaxing - and this it excels at. I thought I would get irritated very quickly, but if you've got the time the whole CD plays out as a very calming backdrop.

I don't know the name of the performers, but if they come up on "Ocean's Got Talent", I'd vote for them.
