4.0 out of 5 stars Highly recommendable, 19 Jun 2013
This is a much better record than I thought it would be after having read the reviews.

First: I bought the cd version, which gives you a lot of information on every track. In addition there is a map of California which goes well with the songs.

Like a lot of other reviewers I could do without more versions of Beach Boys songs: California Feelin', California Saga, Help Me Ronda and Honkin' Down The Highway. But these version - like most of the other songs - have such a loose feel, almost country like, so actually I'm glad to hear these versions.

And it is quite interesting to hear Neil Young sing lead on one of the verses of California Saga as well as it is to hear the ending of Honkin' Down The Highway - no fade but a chorus ending as if it was performed on stage.

After the first 17 seconds of San Simeon you think you're gonna listen to Don't Worry, Baby, but then you get another very relaxed song with the guys of America on background vocals.

Oh yes, as many have noticed, Don't Fight The sea could as well have been a Beach Boys song, as Al, Carl, Brian, Mike and Bruce all take part.

There's also an acoustic version of California Dreamin' with Al, Glen Campbell and David Crosby on vocals. Not a bad version, but to me The Mamas and Papas' version will always be number one.

But all in all a very enjoyable album which I have been waiting for the cd version of. Highly recommendable - also because Al's voice has all the power from the sixties. But we all heard that on the BB tour last year, didn't we?

2.0 out of 5 stars Didn't meet my expectations, 16 Jan 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
I usually like the way James Taylor sings, but this record is just too much on the jazzy side of the road for my taste.

Even the duets - with Chris Botti, Natalie Cole and Toots Theilemans - don't seem to work.

4.0 out of 5 stars Magic moments from the West Coast, 3 Jan 2012
This review is from: The Singles+ (Audio CD)
If you're not a completist and want all that this golden group recorded in 3 years time, this is a pretty fine collection.
In addition to all their well known hits - California Dreamin', Monday Monday, Dream A Little Dream Of Me, Go Where You Wanna Go etc. - you get a string of songs from the solo records of John Phillips, Michelle Phillips and Mama Cass. The latter is represented with no less than 12 songs - fair enough when you think of her fantastic voice.
Put on this record on a grey winter's day and in seconds your mind will be transported to sunny California...

Mickey's Magical Christmas - Snowed In At The House Of Mouse [DVD]
Dvd ~ Carlos Alazraqui
Price: 3.98

3.0 out of 5 stars A true christmas present, 2 Jan 2012
I bought this one for Mickey's Christmas Carol only as I was unable to play my video version of this classic. Great to see it again - and as a bonus there is another classic, Pluto's Christmas Tree (1952). The rest is uninteresting, but maybe your children will like it.

5.0 out of 5 stars A landmark, 6 Nov 2011
This album is a landmark - fantastic songs, two strong voices and a superb production. The bonus live cd - though released a couple of years ago as a single cd - is worth the price alone for the version of Bridge Over troubled Water. When Garfunkel introduces the song, nobody reacts because the record had not yet been released - when the last note is sung, listen to what sounds like a standing ovation. It makes my hairs stand up...

3.0 out of 5 stars Great on a summer's day, 6 Nov 2011
This review is from: Summer Love Songs (Audio CD)
As most Beach Boys fans probably have most of the songs on this cd, you should not pay a fortune for it. But if you find it at a reasonable price, buy it and save it for a sunny day when driving your car. A fine collection.

Canyon of Dreams: The Magic and the Music of Laurel Canyon

4.0 out of 5 stars Pure magic, 21 July 2011
No doubt that Laurel Canyon was a magic place i the sixties, and this book gives you so many details that you feel like having to read it over again. You get stories of all the well known and some not so well know musicians and people in the music business, how Laurel Canyon turned into the center of pop and rock during the sixties. If you are a fan of west coast music this book is a must - what a journey it sends you on, and if you want to double the pleasure while reading, then play some of the music from those who lived in and near the Canyon: Crosby, Stills & Nash, Buffalo Springfield, Donovan, The Byrds, The Doors, Richie Furay, The Mamas and Papas, Neil Young and Joni Mitchell. It's a magical mystery tour and in more than one way a heavy book.

Dream a Little Dream of Me: The Life of 'Mama' Cass Elliot
Dream a Little Dream of Me: The Life of 'Mama' Cass Elliot
by Eddi Fiegel
Edition: Paperback

4.0 out of 5 stars What a lady, what a story, 21 July 2011
Having heard most of the music Mama Cass created or was involved with, this book makes you want to listen to it again and again.
You get her story from the very beginning to the very sad end. If you know her music you will know what a great voice she had, and it seems like her heart was just as big. You get a lot of details here and can't help sometimes feeling sorry for her but then: She lived her life to the full - just sad that it was cut short.

4.0 out of 5 stars A great voice, 13 April 2011
This review is from: Youngblood (Audio CD)
Having had this record since it was released on vinyl in 1982 (bar the bonus track) I listen to it now and then. The former review reminded me that it's time to give it another spin or two.
His voice was standing out in The Beach Boys, and also here - one of his two solo recordings - he's on the top on the rockers as well as on the ballads.
A real rocker is the well known Rockin' All Over The World while two beautiful ballads are One More Night Alone and What more Can I Say. There's a good mix of fast and slow songs, and among those providing background vocals are Timothy B. Schmit.
In 1981 he released his first solo record just called Carl Wilson. Look out for that if you like Youngblood.
