5.0 out of 5 stars A Wealth of Tales in One - read it!, 15 July 2014

This review is from: I Am Istanbul (Kindle Edition)
A cracking tale of a sudden crisis at the Istanbul Atatürk International Airport as Turkey's rich diversity of peoples cross paths, lock horns, and come to terms with their own identities, seamlessly translated by Kenneth J. Dakan.
I wish someone would make the film.

5.0 out of 5 stars Every girl of any age must read this novel, 15 Jan 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
I first read this novel at the age of twelve, and then in translation. It is as good today as it was then: Christie painted our world in beautifully sparse prose, tackling political and social matters with uncompromising insight. A young, reformist Middle Eastern statesman is assassinated, western countries have to walk a tight rope, a breathtaking cache is smuggled out, a resourceful schoolgirl works out how and where, Poirot steps in, and even more heart-breaking truths are revealed at the very end. The murders are almost secondary to the elegant depth of this novel. Read it, and read it again.
My only complaint is with the inconsistency in Kindle spellings. Please stick with 'realise', for instance, not veer between the -ize. And if the title is 'Cat Among the Pigeons' then throughout the text 'among' should be used, not 'amongst' although my personal preference is for the latter.

5.0 out of 5 stars Turkish delights in book form, 15 Jan 2014

What a fabulous idea, literature presenting cities! The City-Pick series does just that, giving the reader a taste of some green olives, a sliver of fabulous ewe's milk cheese, a morsel of spicy sucuk: a delicatessen counter for the reader. A selection of excerpts from writers local and foreign, seamlessly translated if originally written in any language other than English.
I've been handing out these books as Christmas presents. Do go out and buy your own if you're not on my list!

5.0 out of 5 stars The woman behind the man, 15 Jan 2014

This review is from: Magda (Kindle Edition)
Beautifully written and impossible to put down, this is a heart-wrenching story, not for the faint hearted. I love writers who have the capacity to look into the minds of people left in the margins of history. Heartily recommended.

4.0 out of 5 stars Displaced people are people like us, 15 Jan 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
A worthwhile read. The events in Syria displaced hundreds of thousands of people, sentencing them to quite possibly very long long-term temporary residence in camps, where they still try to lead lives as close to normal as possible. The book does an excellent job of making the reader sympathise with their plight.

What a find! Stories that speak out to me only as Inci Aral's can (and soon you will be able read her in English too). Credible, fast-moving, heart-warming. Perfect read at the end of the day to vindicate all that we do to stay human.

5.0 out of 5 stars Maureen pulls it off again, 15 Jan 2014

Maureen Freely enchants the reader with the tale of a world poised on the brink seen through the eyes of a ten-year-old in one of the most stunning places on earth: Istanbul. Until I read this novel, I thought only Stephen King had the ability to describe the world through the eyes of a child. Heartily recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars A charming book, 15 Jan 2014

Captivating from the first word though to the last; fantasy, legend, and the everyday wrapped up as a novel. Seamless translation. Heartily recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars Every girls needs a notebook in each of her handbags!, 15 Jan 2014

Slim, lightweight, A5, lies flat when opened, lovely paperstock that takes fountain pen ink without showing through: need I say more?

1.0 out of 5 stars What a load of rubbish, 3 April 2013

I'd give it no stars if I could. The scenario is loathsome, and individual actions within are at best impossible which I cannot explain here without going into graphic detail. Give it a miss.
