Stanley's Stick
Stanley's Stick
by John Hegley
Edition: Paperback
Price: £4.79

5.0 out of 5 stars Brilliant!, 18 Mar 2014
This review is from: Stanley's Stick (Paperback)
I love this book. It has John Hegley's usual brilliant combination of the funny and touching and well-observed, and it is so true, as it is exactly what children do, and they will recognise this and love it.

The beautiful illustrations are just right and have the same qualities.

Highly recommended - a future children's classic.

5.0 out of 5 stars Tip top!, 26 Feb 2013

My session musician husband and I have been doing gigs around the UK and abroad for the same amount of time as the author, and everything he says is spot on. From how to avoid pitfalls (there are many) to how to behave (it makes a big difference), this is essential reading, and having taken 20 years to learn all these things (and still learning), I would recommend it to anyone starting out or continuing as a working musician. Pete Cook has also put all his considerable wit and humour into the book, and highlighted boxes contain lots of funny anecdotes, which makes it a very enjoyable read.
An essential reference book.

I love this album, in fact all of Rosie Brown's albums. Her voice is wonderful, the songs are all beautiful, and her musical partnership with guitarist Bernd Rest produces a very special quality, with his playing and production making atmospheric listening of the highest order. Highly recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars A musical treasure, 22 April 2010
This review is from: Bee for Bass (Audio CD)
This album by highly regarded double-bass player Andy Hamill is a snapshot of all the singers (and some instrumentalists) he was working with in the year he recorded it. Amongst them are some well-known voices and some significant emerging ones, often singing songs written specially for the album. With a track per artist, this can be used as a way into lots of great new music, and as such is a great resource as well as a great listen. Highly recommended.

I have bought this book again and again as a present to give to new babies - in fact I'm just about to buy another one! The illustrations are beautiful, in the same way as Eric Carle (of The Very Hungry Caterpillar), and the cut out cardboard pages are wonderfully inventive. The text is simple and charming, and whilst being perfect for teaching babies to speak, it can last a child several years. I now use it as a reading practice book for my 5-year old.
Highly recommended. Petr Horacek's books for older children are also wonderful.

5.0 out of 5 stars Funny, heartwarming., 22 April 2010
'American Cousins' is one of my favourite films. It's funny and heartwarming and evocative, in the way that fellow classic Scottish film 'Local Hero' is. It also has exciting moments and brings together American and Glaswegian culture in a totally unselfconscious and convincing way. This is a film I can watch again and again, and the same is true of two generations of my Anglo/Scottish family. Highly recommended.

I'm usually too scared to read thrillers, but this is funny, well-written, compelling, and at the same time sensitive and very well-observed. It's also such a page-turner that I stayed up reading it two nights in a row till 2am, knowing that I was making myself tired but not caring. I felt in such safe hands that when it got really scarey I could handle it. And along the way the writer takes you on virtual Italian holiday, the descriptions are so evocative. Brilliant and highly recommended.
