An Illustrated Anthology of Erotica: Sexual Art and Literature from Around the World
An Illustrated Anthology of Erotica: Sexual Art and Literature from Around the World

5.0 out of 5 stars Beautiful Illustrations Matched by Both Thoughtful Text Selection and Interesting Original Text, 5 April 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Quite a few illustrated erotic anthologies have been written, and their history as 'Pillow Books', aimed specifically at erotic arousal is extensive. The approach adopted by Hill & Wallace in their three-volume anthology adopts an approach weighted towards the illustrations, with literature extracts mostly short. Of course, space limitations in such an approach allow many more of both components, and the format adopted here, using three substantial volumes permits a magnificently epic treatment. The artwork – mostly paintings and drawings - duplicates much of that available elsewhere, but here great pains have been taken to give high quality and reasonable size to the very many visual components. Hill & Wallace have also achieved a very standard in the text which links pertinent texts. This is an invigorating work, which benefits from lengthy browsing.

Desire to Dominate
Desire to Dominate
by Victor Rogano
Edition: Paperback

3.0 out of 5 stars A Mostly Historical Review Of Extreme Erotic Stimulus, 31 Mar. 2014
This review is from: Desire to Dominate (Paperback)
'The Desire to Dominate' is subtitled: 'Insight into those who desire to be sexually dominated and those who dominate …', and this is more-or-less what Rogano's book does, although the 'insight' is less analytical than descriptive of the range of techniques devised by the inventive human race for the imposing of will on others. As with many of the books issued by Canova Press in the increasingly permissive opening years of the 1970s, Rogano's book appealed to a mass market hungry for erotic titillation, and whatever the higher ideals its presentation might have suggested, this was surely intended. The book is largely a historical description, beginning with the cruelties of slave systems, from Greek and Roman onwards and progressing through the more enlightened eras of Victorian life and the present day, in which the domination of others was more constrained by mercy. Domination practices of secret societies and the Church are considered, and some attention is paid to the modern trend in which the restrained use of pain is used as an adjunct to erotic activities, principally as a means of stimulation in the approach to more standard activity. These days there is much less use for books such as this, because stimulus and arousal are now pervasive in society, but for those who enjoy descriptions of extremes in their erotica, there will stll be an interest. The book feeds this interest well.

S-M: The Last Taboo
S-M: The Last Taboo
by Graham Greene
Edition: Paperback

4.0 out of 5 stars This Book Aims to Correct Many of the Misconceptions Regarding Pain and Pleasure in a Loving Relationship, 27 Mar. 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: S-M: The Last Taboo (Paperback)
Unusually for a Blue Moon publication this is non-fiction and quite big, and is an attempt to organise some rationality into a practice which is usually misunderstood. It deals with the practice of giving and receiving pain as part of a human relationship, usually between loving couples, and because of this consensual characteristic it does not fit acceptable definitions of either sadism or masochism, although each of these practices often involves an element of sensual enjoyment. The Greenes, whom one might infer are devotees, feel that using the abbreviation 'S-M' emphasises the distinct nature of their subject. Class differences are pointed out, there being greater adoption of the practice by the upper echelons, and differences between the US and the UK are analysed, although such analyses are always complicated by difficulties of garthering reliable information. Much of the book is taken up with considerations of de Sade, and it is maintained that the man is unfairly maligned, being here seen as an enlightened figure for his time. An appendix offers a total of fourteen abstracts from fiction which illustrates various aspects of S-M, mostly rather tame as though aiming to avoid offence. The book offers considerable food for thought, even if many of its arguments are difficult to follow. It would be good to feel that those who viewed S-M as a nasty perversion could be reformed by it.

4.0 out of 5 stars Insight Into Nazi Morality, Public and Private, 26 Mar. 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Erotic images have become steadily more acceptable in the past forty years, and there are now many books presenting either synoptic selections or collection-based summaries of the wealth of available material. Several different emphases may be chosen, mostly on the basis of particular periods in which images became widely available. Von Bockhain's collection of Nazi-era material is presented here, and is of particular interest because of the divergence that was marked in the field of erotica. Erotic images were officially frowned upon, but those in charge of the laws routinely flouted their own rulings. The collection offered here is in the tradition of the Victorian erotic postcard, with its mix of seductive female poses and heterosexual scenes, and it includes a brief summary of Nazi attitudes to erotica in the era of utilitarian repopulation of the world with pure Aryans. An interesting book which adds a step to our understanding of the role of erotic imagery.

Justice No. 17
Justice No. 17
by Barbara (Editor) Stone
Edition: Pamphlet

2.0 out of 5 stars A Disappointing Attempt at the Erotic Chastisement Genre, 6 Mar. 2014
This review is from: Justice No. 17 (Pamphlet)
On the basis of this issue, Justice seems to have been an amateurish attempt to take advantage of the liberated publishing climate of the 1970s that was enjoyed with considerable success by the erotic chastisement magazines such as 'Janus' which discovered the rich market in these early in the decade. It is a 66 page stapled monthly, poorly printed in A5 format with a mixture of mediocre stories, fairly routine letters and reasonably competent drawings and photographs. Perhaps by number 17 it had run out of steam; certainly the earlier numbers seem to have had full colour covers. However, this example at least is at best poor.

The Sins of Our Fathers: A Study in Victorian Pornography
The Sins of Our Fathers: A Study in Victorian Pornography
by Paul Ryan
Edition: Hardcover

5.0 out of 5 stars Superb Victorian Erotica, 6 Mar. 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This is the first volume of a pair published by EPS which draw on the wealth of photographic erotica that emerged in the later years of the Victorian era. Most of the comments I have made in my review of the accompanying second volume apply here too. It is superbly conceived and produced, and is a pinnacle in the field of historical erotica.

Bachelor's Degree in Spanking
Bachelor's Degree in Spanking

4.0 out of 5 stars Inventive Example of the Spanking Genre, 6 Mar. 2014

The story related here concerns the dissertation choice of an undergraduate who is so stimulated by reading magazines concerning the erotic chastisement of women that he proposes to research the subject with the help of case studies. His proposal is accepted, and his progress is documented here, his own experiences with willing female companions being supplemented by the experiences of others, including his father and some of his work colleagues, and also his middle-aged supervisor. Not unsurprisingly, the young women selected for experimentation enjoy their manual chastisements, mostly to the point of enthusiasm, even when the principles had been initially against the proposed experience.

If you buy a good quality hat you will wish to look after it. This box is ideal for the job. It is smart, solidly made and strong, and it would probably survive a ballistic near-miss. Superb.

4.0 out of 5 stars Musical Decadence, 6 Mar. 2014

This review is from: Cocktails Carnage.. (Audio CD)
It may have been the powerful cover art that attracted me, but it set the tone and I have wallowed in the harsh but opulent flood of music. My only criticism is that the printed lyrics, difficult to discriminate aurally are in such a tiny typeface that a jeweller's loupe is a necessity if the intending reader is not possessed of a high-power microscope. However, the music does stand for itself.
