2.0 out of 5 stars A soapy European mongrol, 19 Mar. 2013

This review is from: The Sicilian [DVD] (DVD)
I'm a Cimino completist and had vague memories of this being sort-of ok when I watched this on VHS back in 1988. I was wrong, although stunning to look at it's a misjudged, uneven mess of a film. Hamstrung by an awful lead performance from Christopher Lambert, and featuring the usually great Joss Ackland in an awkward Mafioso role, the story is a muddled tale of a supposedly real life Sicilian Robin Hood. It has moments of art-house pretension, soapy melodrama and the odd bit of brutal violence. But the overall effect is a made for TV miniseries that's been compacted into a feature film.

A nice alternate take on the Snow White tale. A bit too 'Twighlighty' in places, but Kristen Stewart does dial back her now-legendary poutiness. Charlize Theron is a standout though.

3.0 out of 5 stars Not anamorphic, it is letterbox despite confusing packaging, 19 Mar. 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
A thoroughly enjoyable early-70s crime thriller, the debut from writer-director Michael Cimino. Perhaps a sign of the times but the laughs do sit a little uneasily with the sometimes brutal violence. The picture quality is ok but the biggest annoyance is the product info on the back. It says the picture is presented in letterbox, but then is described as 4:3 full frame. (Sort of) thankfully it's letterboxed, preserving the 2:40:1 aspect ratio, but 16:9 anamorphic would've been much better.

4.0 out of 5 stars Essential reading for any film fan, 19 Mar. 2013

This is a big read. I confess to skipping over a few chapters, not sure why the author needed to include a history of the West and the Johnston County War as well as vaguely relevant scenery on the state of Hollywood in the 70s. But the insider view of the Hollywood system, the days of the Director as King and United Artists' desire to be different is a fascinating, if now so alien, peek at a time where film-making and filmmakers seemed so bold and daring. I think the author does skip over his naivety a bit, but his account of the premiere of Heaven's Gate in particular is heartfelt and well written.

4.0 out of 5 stars Beautiful, ambitious, flawed, 19 Mar. 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
There's more written about the making of Heaven's Gate and what it was eventually blamed for causing in Hollywood than the actual film itself. I watched this after reading Steven Bach's book 'Final Cut' and it's a terrific companion piece to this, the full 3hr 39min cut of the film.

The positives are the film looks achingly beautiful. The Montana landscapes Cimino and cinematographer Vilmos Zsigmond capture are stunning. And the interiors and crowd scenes look like period paintings. The clean up by Criterion (under the supervision of Cimino) reveals verdant greens and bold blues. The cleaned up sound - including David Mansfield's wonderful score - works for the most part, but it does expose one of the films flaws. The dialogue is often hard to follow, lost in a mix of background noise. And when it is clear it's stilted, lacking impact. Apart from a standout scene in the film's Harvard prologue, the dialogue for most for most of the film is undramatic, dull even. This makes it hard to care for the main characters. And in a film this size there's surprisingly few, only three of them. So it's more noticeable that there's no one person to root for.

Another main flaw is the lack of narrative or dramatic drive in the film. We know from the first hour that the hired killers are due to arrive in Johnston County, and that they have a kill list of 125 names. But not much else actually happens before the climactic battle. They killers turn up, they kill. The settlers talk a lot, then some of them get killed. The lack of any real dramatic tension only contributes to the overall sense of nihilism that runs through the picture. As if watching a three hour countdown to an inevitable massacre, only to then have a possible victory stolen as the US Cavalry arrive to 'save' the killers. The antagonist gets killed in what looks like an afterthought, before a vague, almost surreal prologue ends the move.

Still, it's visionary, bold film-making. But Cimino's greatest strengths - beautiful visuals and compositions - are fatally wounded by his greatest weakness - poorly drawn characters in too slight a story.

1.0 out of 5 stars Disappointing, 13 Sept. 2012

This was a replacement for a cheapo hard case I got from another Seller that split after a weeks of light use. This item initially was a good product, sturdy and light. But after a couple of weeks, when I was changing out the memory card, I noticed a split in the seam at the volume rocker. Sent it back as faulty and received a refund.

1.0 out of 5 stars totally useless, 13 Sept. 2012

I live less than 10 miles from the main transmitter in Scotland. I bought this to replace a £8 cheapie analogue ariel we had so we could get HD Freeview channels. Not only did this item fail to detect any HD channels, it failed to detect half of the channels the old one did. I plugged the old ariel in and it detected ALL freeview HD channels and all the regular freeview ones. I sent this right back for a refund as it was either faulty or not fit for purpose. It took almost two weeks to get a refund from the seller and, despite twice confirming I'd be refunded my postage (for the hassle and poor service), haven't bothered to do so and are now ignoring me. One of the worst online shopping experiences I've had.

1.0 out of 5 stars Totally hit and miss, 7 Sept. 2012

I did do my homework before buying this card. I read about fake, hacked cards so I thought by settling for a brand, it'd be ok. Wrong. The card failed inside the phone after three weeks. I tried to rescue it but found, as many others have, that once the phone reports it as 'blank or unsupported file system' it's pretty much goosed. I had about 10GB of personal stuff on it, luckily most was backed up to a cloud account. But I still lost two weeks of photos. I eventually got a refund after Amazon sent me to SanDisk UK, who replied quickly to say I should go back to Amazon :-/

I've replaced it with a smaller 16GB card, again from SanDisk, but it's a Class 10, Ultra (whatever that means). I assume because it's more expensive it should be better quality.

And if that fails, I'll be straight onto Amazon again.

2.0 out of 5 stars Does the job but very poor quality, 7 Sept. 2012

I bough this as a quick n easy solution to swapping out memory card adaptors and fiddling with phone sync/USB to drop files between phones and laptops. It's made of a cheap plastic and the whole item feels quite flimsy. It does read card data, but there's a useless LED light display. I say useless because all the LEDs light up at the same time! I know it's only a fiver but I expected more. I've bought a few phone accessories in recent weeks, having got a new mobile phone and moved from iOS to Android. So far the items have either become faulty or they are of poor quality.

This was a great find for our Sony 7" DVD player. It was cheap, and does the job. Only niggle is the power connector is a bit flimsy and waggles in the DVD player's socket a bit.
