This book rang true for me, and is also very well written. Thought provoking and enjoyable, an interesting reflection on life at the time.

You might see this as romanticist, but it manages to be an excellent read whilst still bringing home some of the conditions that people suffer because of war.

If you consider when this was written, it is a blazing attack on the mores of the time, and must have been a revelation to many of the rich people who tread it. So well written, incredible descriptions of the conditions people were living in, whilst still being a good read.

This works so well: it is soothing as soon as it enters the eye, and the effect lasts for much longer than ordinary eye drops.

1.0 out of 5 stars A travesty!, 12 Aug 2013

I have loved the songs of the McGarrigle's for years. I have enjoyed music by some of the people on this album, but this is quite simply the worst CD I have ever listened to, let alone bought. They have made a very unpleasant porridge out of some amazing songs. I simply don't know how they can be done this badly. I actually thought the first track was meant as a joke, but soon realised it wasn't.

This book is so well written. The characters are totally believable, and draw you into their world with a few pages.
I thoroughly enjoyed this glimpse into the world a adolescents, and how refreshing to read a book set in New Zealand!

4.0 out of 5 stars Very sturdy, quite heavy., 31 May 2013

This is an excellent cover for anyone who is rough with their iPad, it is very strong and protective. It robs the iPad of some of it's beauty by covering about 1.5cms of the front. If you expect purple to be purple, be warned, it is a very strange mauvy colour!

5.0 out of 5 stars Simply wonderful!, 26 May 2012

I have always been fascinated by Mervyn Peake, and loved his books and illustrations, but even if I had never heard of him, I would have rated this book five stars. It is extremely well written, and anyone who grew up in London in the 50's will relish the description of the life we led then. Similarly, anyone who has experienced dementia in their family or friends will find this book very moving.
Clare's love for her parents and appreciation of their talents and humanity shine through this book. The writing is superb. I would also recommend her mother, Maeve Gilmore's, book about her husbands illness. (A World Away by Maeve Gilmour).

2.0 out of 5 stars Adult or teenage fiction?, 26 May 2012

I have enjoyed some of her other books, but found the style of this one slightly unsatisfactory. If I was reading this as a young teenage, I think I would have been greatly taken with it, but as an adult I found it a bit naive and unconvincing.

4.0 out of 5 stars Grim but compelling, 26 May 2012

Having sympathised and empathised with the little boy in the first book, this book quite upset me. It is unpleasantly realistic in it's portrayal of a life gone wrong, and sad to reflect how bad parenting can produce someone with some of the parents characteristics. Very well written.
