Some Swedish friends are not so sure about a British Wallander but I found the interpretation very faithful to the Mankell stories and a good juxtaposition to the Swedish film versions. Kenneth Branagh gives a more complex performance allowing more emotional struggle than the Swedish actors allow. I enjoyed the ambivalence of the characterisation but it will depend on how committed you are to the Swedish stoicism. I recommend this version of the Wallander stories as a complement to the Swedish versions not as an alternative.

This came strongly recommended from another Damian Lewis fan and what a wonderful surprise this film turned out to be! Quirky, off beat humour with good performances that the British do so well, the eccentric country person that dates back to Canterbury Tales. It has become the movie friends want to see when visiting, now that I have seen it countless times I think I will have to hide it away!

5.0 out of 5 stars Nothin Dead about Deadwood, 21 May 2009

Deadwood provides one of those rare experiences of a high quality production for television with a script that keeps you enthralled throughout. Exceptional performances from a universally well-matched cast that manages to make the most of dense and poetic dialogue. What is surprising is the humour that emerges from the darkness of the stories that reveal a grimy existence in a tough world. Compulsive viewing.
