Heart of the Shin Buddhist Path: A Life of Awakening
Heart of the Shin Buddhist Path: A Life of Awakening

5.0 out of 5 stars excellent, 11 July 2014

A very good depth account of the shin Buddhist path. I would recommend this book to Pure Land Buddhists, those interested in Shinran, and those seriously interested in East Asian Spirituality. An inspiration to read.

2.0 out of 5 stars Not lasting very well, 6 May 2014

I am disappointed to discover that after a few weeks the plastic surround has snapped in one place and now the outer cover is separating from the inner. I rarely take this outside the home so it seems surprisingly un-robust. Otherwise in terms of the look and functionality, when new, I was very pleased.

4.0 out of 5 stars disturbing reading, 4 Jan. 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
A disturbing read for anyone interested in the culture and people of South Asia. There is no doubt that women are often treated in the ways the author describes. Having witnessed this as a regular visitor to India, to understand the history and currant situation that maintains such inequalities, violence and prejudice is both enlightening and underscores the need for continued pressure internationally in support of policies that will lead to more permanent change in the medieval attitudes towards women.

5.0 out of 5 stars Rich mix of insights and innovation, 29 Jun. 2013
This is a truly inspirational book containing many gems, not only about Buddhism but in broader terms the whole spectrum of spiritual traditions. The lightness of touch, sensitivity and plain speaking might deceive the casual reader into thinking the ideas presented here are equally simple. In fact the contrary is the case, there is much depth here that awaits the reader who is serious about the ongoing process of discovery that marks the religious life and the spirit of therapeutic endeavour. David Brazier displays a depth of feeling and erudition that we have come to expect from him evident in earlier publications. Never orthodox or prey to the demands of religious convention, he nonetheless manages to challenge complacency where it exists in both whilst maintaining a deep and profound respect for what we have inherited from our spiritual ancestors and forebears. A book than one can go back to again and again and find something new each time.

3.0 out of 5 stars Not as inspiring as I thought, 3 April 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
I saw this book on the coffee table of a friend whose judgement I valued and thought this would be worth the read. In fact I found it rather boring and saccharine. The idea is fine but as a full time Buddhist priest the ideas here I felt presented nothing new even if the anecdotes reflected laudably on the individuals concerned. I short it didn't challenge me in the way I had hoped.

5.0 out of 5 stars A good read, 3 April 2013

I was looking for a short overview of Luthers life and thought that was not overly academic which Tomlin's book provided. A good book for the price.

Fiona Robyn is an amazingly sharp observer of life often bringing attention to the extraordinary nature of ordinary things. Her poetic voice weaves its way through all her writing and leaves you hungry for more.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great read!, 26 Oct. 2012

This is a wonderful read, the characters are very well drawn and plausible. Joe's character brings vividly back many aspects of adolescence for me that at times left me squirming at others laughing out loud. Fiona's prose is a delight to read, and whilst one could finish this novel in one sitting I suggest you savor the rich and perceptive observations that make for a truly engaging narrative.

3.0 out of 5 stars An important text for English speaking Pureland Buddhist's, 26 Oct. 2012
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
I am still working through this book, but I am finding many gems that enrich my understanding of the Pure Land tradition. This is an essential text in my mind for Honen scholars, Jodo shu priests and Pure Land practitioners, as well as the general reader interested in the history of Buddhist thought. I am only giving this three stars because the formatting on Kindle is not very good with page breaks in odd places. Given the price of this text I consider that this should have been attended to with greater care.
