Easy to fit, neat, looks good. A bit heavy but protects well, with the added advantage that it puts kindle in sleep mode when you close the cover. Stands up well if want free-standing.

5.0 out of 5 stars Brilliant literary fiction - but not for "easy read" enthusiasts, 3 Sept. 2012
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Recent reviews demonstrate that it isn't always a good idea to sell books cheaply on Kindle.People try genres of book which they wouldn't normally read - this is not a bad thing, indeed I've found some wonderful books this way. But if it's not your cup of tea because you really only read thrillers/chicklit etc, please don't give it a terrible review, as it's really not helpful to others.

This is a sublime, moving, brilliantly crafted book. But it isn't pacy, the storyline isn't linear, it's about character and relationships and how/if we ever really get to know the "real" person through biographies, or even first-hand accounts. I'm no expert reviewer, so please read the early reviews, before this got sold so cheaply, if you want a flavour of the book.

I find it very telling that literary fiction on Kindle tends to get mediocre/really bad reviews, whereas chick lit and e-published crime series get 5 stars all round. Sadly, the Kindle reviews are included in overall reviews, so it's becoming really difficult to use Amazon reviews at all any more to help choose books.

5.0 out of 5 stars Beautifully written, 23 Sept. 2011

Worth reading for the lyrical quality of the writing alone. A book to be savoured rather than raced through. There's not a great deal of plot (for those who like eventful stories)but its evocation of the language and times still gripped me. I really warmed to Annie Dunne as a character and will now go back and read about her in her earlier incarnation in a Long Long Way (thanks to MML Packwood's review for enlightening me!).

Bought to keep one of the finest performances I have ever witnessed fresh in my mind, I also found myself thinking harder about the themes of this amazing 'state of the nation' play.

3.0 out of 5 stars Good writing does not a novel make, 20 May 2010
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: A Gate at the Stairs (Paperback)
I love Lorrie Moore's short stories but I found this novel hard going. On every page there is beautiful writing, sentences and snippets that ring in the memory. Tassie's character is beautifully drawn. There are experiences and incidents that promise much insight into the life of a young girl. But they never seem to draw together into a satisfying and meaningful whole novel. There's a lack of plot that made some sections feel really tedious, the beautiful writing often meanders and distracts as if to fill space. I finished the book more convinced than ever that the short story form is seriously under-rated and that Lorrie Moore is one of its greatest exponents.

5.0 out of 5 stars No rain on my parade, 18 Dec. 2009

This review is from: Ordinary Thunderstorms (Paperback)
Like a child waiting for the postman to arrive with birthday gifts, I eagerly anticipate any new fare from William Boyd, my favourite current author. ("Any Human Heart" will forever be in my top 10, and that of both my student daughters, and practically anyone I have ever given a copy to.)I greatly admire his writing, his originality, and his ability to surprise with such a variety of themes & styles in his oevre. "Ordinary Thunderstorms" is a cracking good read, less emotionally demanding than other Boyd novels, but as artfully written as ever.
