5.0 out of 5 stars Rich and fun, 26 Oct 2009
This review is from: Black Swan (Audio CD)
This is an enjoyable album of substance and passion that grows on you and will keep Athlete's fans well happy. This album is rich with melodies and interesting lyrics. The Back Swan song is heart rendering. In all, this album comes from a mature and well knit band whose music reaches out to a more modest world that yearns for meaningfulness, simplicity, grace, honesty, and fun. It is delightful. Can't stop listening to it. Well done.

5.0 out of 5 stars Magical, 10 Oct 2006
This review is from: The Beauty Room (Audio CD)
The Beauty room has captured and blended the essentials of the most influential musical styles that have shaped music and culture after the 50's. Clearly, it is a magical crafting of musical genres reflecting a rich and cultivated appreciation of music that takes you back to the roots. The room is a wide space of tranquility scented by a creamy, mellow, lush, melodic, aromatic, fluid arrangement of instruments and vocals that ease you into that a sense of contentment that says, yes, I can taste it, beauty does exist!

5.0 out of 5 stars Great mix of jazzy bluesy songs, 22 Dec 2004
This review is from: Feels Like Home (Audio CD)
With an extraordinary debut and such as an exceptional album such as Come Away with Me, Norah Jones had a lot live up to. Whilst Feels Like home perhaps resembles her 1st album she nonetheless demonstrates that she is capable of maintaining her class at producing a beautiful mix of jazzy bluesy ballads that are ideal for background music on a lazy laid-back dinner with friends. With this album she proves that she is an established performer who embellishes her music with a band that complements her style and broaden her sound.
Indeed it takes playing the CD a few times to start appreciating the subtleties that have gone into these songs and realise that it is a different album than the 1st one. In any case, why should her style be different, and once we have resolved that into our head we are better able to accept - and enjoy - the reason why it may sound a bit like the Come Way with Me. You get Norah Jones and no one else and that is good enough for me because her style and delivery are sweet and wonderful to hear. I didn't buy this CD to hear someone else, I bought it to hear her songs she way she performs them best, as as if she was live in my living room.

5.0 out of 5 stars Sizzling with creativity and originality, 22 Dec 2004
This review is from: Unwritten (Audio CD)
This album is fun and full of catchy tunes that indicate that this artist is destined to be a chart topper. Her music draws from a sizzling basket of styles ranging from R&B, techno-rock, rock, and ballads seasoned with superb orchestral arrangements. It is clear from her performances and music that Natasha is a romantic and a poet who uses her music and lyrics to convey her passions. 'These Words', 'Unwritten', I bruise Easily', 'We're All Mad', 'Wild Horses, 'Peace Of Me' are beautiful songs that invite us into a thoughtful life that has voluptuous emotion and sensitivity. 'Single' is an unashamed and powerful declaration of some of her values from a person who clearly stands out from the too-much-of-the same unoriginal artists that we are unfortunately bored with. Natasha is therefore extremely refreshing and brings a much awaited uplift to an otherwise dull female music industry.
The album is superbly crowned by an hidden track, 'Perfect day', that leaves you in the doubt that Natasha is an innovative and creative artist who has a beautiful voice.
Indispensable album on the CD rack.

5.0 out of 5 stars Heart and soul music, 22 Dec 2004
This review is from: A Family Affair (Audio CD)
Eric Bibb is a familiar face on the world's blues scene, always in demand and touring extensively in a wide range of countries. This demonstrates two undeniable things:
Number one - that his talent is now well recognized and he stands in any gap left by previous folk-bluesmen. Indeed he has picked up the mantle of his predecessors to speak, play and grow the blues into our generation.
Number two - that the blues still remains one of the most powerful and unique means to communicate emotions and values of spiritual, social and ethical significance.
Listening to Eric Bibb and attending his concerts is an enriching spiritual experience. He is a remarkable and versatile finger picking guitarist who captivates his audience with his rich voice and passion. He is a humble and warm person who also has a great sense of humour, thus enabling his audience to immediately connect with him.
'A family Affair' was almost inevitable from two great artists that owe much to each other. This intimate and gracious album clearly shows the bonds between a father and his son, and as such is a son's recognition of his father's influence and the father's affirmation of his son's artistic journey and talent. The collection of carefully chosen influential songs represents some of the music that has united them over the years. Together they have created an inspirational and moving album that brings together beautiful renditions of classics from Peter Seeger and Leadbelly, as well as a deeply moving version of Eva's Cassidy "Fields of God". They have taken Sting's version further than Sting did, and managed to blend it really well into the spirit of this album. Eric's own songs among the traditional ones place him extremely very well as an authentic and brilliant contemporary songwriter of gospel-folk-blues.
This is heart and soul music that is purely magic.

5.0 out of 5 stars 60s East Coast Blues revisited in style, 22 Dec 2004
If you like 60's East Coast Blues or if you are not sure what it is about, then Roy Book Binder is for you. With his laid-back vocals, storyteller and master finger picker Roy Book Binder is a shining and accomplished example of the traveling-bluesman tradition that began in the '20s, and continues today. He is probably one of the best rag and traditional blues players around who narrates the blues like it first started and embodies the culture and soul of the early existential blues.
His repertoire also draws on masters of the blues rearranging/adapting tunes to give them his own identity. As the CD cover says " Roy Book Binder plays in the spirit of the masters like Blind Wille Mc tell, Pink Anderson, and Clifford Gibson". And if you like harmonica in the early blues tradition, he is accompanied on this album by harmonica player Rock Bottom. As a 3 piece band, the Hillbilly Blues cats transport you in a pleasurable journey of the early blues in a way that is natural and is genuine blues. This album is just a joy to listen to.

5.0 out of 5 stars ELEGANT, 22 Dec 2004
Minnie Driver was trained to be a singer before she became an actress and one wonders why it took so long to reverse the roles because she is a truly talented songwriter-singer. Everything I've Got In My Pocket is a very personal and intimate album of fairy-tale like laid-back jazzy rock country folky mellow and lyrical songs/ballads. It is extremely melodic, sweet and gorgeous for background music. Coasting music for dreamers, poets and lovers in the vein of Dido and Norah Jones.
Shame she doesn't do more live performances but that may come when she has gained more confidence to produce further music to firmly establish her as a distinguished musician/singer.

5.0 out of 5 stars GOTTA GET THRU THIS IS STILL DEVASTATINGLY AWESOME, 15 Dec 2004
This review is from: Gotta Get Thru This (Audio CD)
I wrote a review of this album a couple years ago and my comments remain much the same. Obvioulsy with experience his new album "Second First Impressions" is more polished but Daniel Bedingfield's first album still remains stunning. Both albums demonstrates that Daniel has a wealth of creativity in him. The diversity and quality of his music as well as the depth of the lyrics on some of the titles of the " Gotta Get Thru this" album are unique and refreshing. His voice and energy reach into your soul like little else can and, without a doubt, track 9 "honest questions" is devastatingly moving: it leaves you standing; you stop everything you're doing and listen to it over and over again. His voice is simply incredible. What Daniel Bedingfield has successfully accomplished are very different songs for different moods and this album is therefore likely to reach music lovers from different strands. Superb arrangements crown it all. A must on your CD rack
