5.0 out of 5 stars An up to date and fascinating read about a modern biological research topic., 3 Sept. 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This book begins with a clear and accurate account of the biology leading to the study of endosymbiosis in which one microbe enters another and eventually becomes integrated to become an organelle i.e. a mitochondrion or a chloroplast. Research into this phenomenon is lucidly documented and the results discussed, fully augmenting the rather scanty accounts of the topic given in many biology textbooks. The use of the sequencing of small subunit rRNA in the study of microbes and other organisms involved in the relationship is presented and the resulting book gives a fascinating insight into the international research being conducted into how and when endosymbiosis occurred. Students should find this book a window into this important aspect of evolutionary studies. It contains information not readily available in popular scientific literature. An enjoyable read!

Field Guide to the Wild Flowers of the Algarve
Field Guide to the Wild Flowers of the Algarve
by Chris Thorogood
Edition: Hardcover
Price: £22.75

4.0 out of 5 stars The best guide to plants in this area available, although keys would help., 25 July 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This guide helps to decide which species identified with other floras is correct but the lack of keys is a disadvantage. The illustrations could be more helpful but overall it makes tdentification of plants in this part of the world much easier. However it is a must for anyone botanising in the Algarve.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent guide to botanical terms with a colour chart as well., 25 July 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This book is the best of similar botanical dictionaries with many unusual terms included and illustrated and a unique colour chart at the end. It certainly makes floras and other identification guides much easier to use. A really useful addition to any botanical library.

by Charles Edward Hubbard
Edition: Mass Market Paperback
Price: £13.48

5.0 out of 5 stars The best guide to grass identification., 10 July 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This book is the best guide by far to the identification of British grasses. The only problem is that over the years my previous copies have fallen apart so that I have to buy a new one. It is well worth the expense!

5.0 out of 5 stars An excellent update into recent botanical information., 22 Jun. 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This book contains much of interest to people who care about plants including a chapter on fungi. It should appeal to those who wish to increase their knowledge of the most important living things on our planet without which there would be no food to eat or oxygen to breathe. Even as a botanist I found much information that was new to me. It is an excellent book to accompany David Attenborough's Kingdom of Plants 3D.

5.0 out of 5 stars A beautifully illustrated guide to the Birds of Paradise, 22 Jun. 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This book will be the only way that most birders will see these species except for the Paradise Riflebird which is easily accessible in Queensland, where I saw and heard it. The photographs are exceptional and the text very informative. The birds plumage is unbelievable as is their display. This book would be a treasured member of any one's bookshelf if they wish to experience the sheer wonder of those travellers who have visited New Guinea and seen the living birds.

5.0 out of 5 stars The best visual identification guide of the more difficult birds in Britain that I have ever used., 26 April 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: Birds: ID Insights (Hardcover)
This book is unique. The points to observe are clearly stated and beautifully illustrated. Multiple points are listed and the sex differences and juvenile characteristics are clearly set out. It is much better than any of the many guides I am familiar with. Although the common and easily identified species that cannot be confused are omitted it enables the ones that can be confused to be quickly distinguished. I would recommend it wholeheartedly to help guides explain why a species is given a particular name rather than talk vaguely about its jiz. Perhaps a mention of differences in the song would also be useful but they would be difficult to put into words. Great value and it works!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars A pessimistc reality faces us in the future., 29 Dec. 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: Ten Billion (Paperback)
This book makes a catastrophic impression without reading a word that can be obtained by flicking through the pages at the numerous J-shaped curves showing an increasingly accelerating rise in world population, carbon dioxide concentration in the atmosphere, global temperature, loss of tropical rainforest, water usage, coal consumption, number of motor vehicles and major floods in Asia. Fossil fuels are not running out and and their use is increasing whereas the alternative green energy proposals are not viable. Possible remedies are not popular in many countries so science must provide an answer. One possibility is to invest in a major effort to capture the sun's energy in the same way that green plants do during photosynthesis and another is through genetically engineered drought and pest resistant crops. If none of these are achieved and accepted the suggested alternative is to teach your son to use a gun to defend the lucky countries from the flood of immigrants from those areas destroyed by climate change. Read it and you will be convinced that the pessimists are right!

The Serpent's Promise: The Bible Retold as Science

2.0 out of 5 stars A mixture of scientific facts and intangible theology that are not compatible., 24 Dec. 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
I have read all of Steve Jones books listed in this volume and find this one does not achieve its sub-title.
People do not read the bible for a scientific explanation of creation and evolution or even of good and evil. Science and theology don't mix and God has been expelled from the material universe so that it is undetectable by scientific methods. I was sad to find this book was not confined to science. I would have liked to have been informed of the latest explanations of observable facts. I for one would have loved to read about the genetics of Steve Jones's snails!
