Skullcandy Aviator Headphones - Brown / Gold
Eargasm! (I'm not sure if I can put that but it's true...)
First off I'll go with looks and say that I was concerned with the brown/gold because to me, in the box they didn't look as good as the simple black version. But my concerns were washed away. They look amazing and almost shine (and the cleaning cloth supplied keeps them shining). It might also be worth mentioning that the white model doesn't come with the see-through earcups if that was a deciding factor for anyone...
But now that's settled I'll review the headphones for their main purpose - The sound. As soon as I got them I put them on and needless to say they were absolutely amazing. Noise cancellation is not their strongest point (compare to the top-end Bose headphones at any rate) but regardless that is not to say that they're bad. Far from it. They're still sufficient to block out virtually anything, especially when used at anything from 50% volume. The quality of the sound itself is also fantastic! I listen to virtually every type of music imaginable and so can give a reasonably accurate view of what it sounds like to play nearly anything. It performs at it's best on anything with powerful instrumentals such as rock/metal music simply because you don't miss out on anything and the quality is so clear and crisp. Also despite previous reviews saying the bass isn't quite up to scratch, I'd disagree and say that it's spot on. It's not loaded with bass but in comparison to the Beats by Dr. Dre, I'd say they're virtually no different. It performs well on anything from pop and R&B to rock to soft ballads. I can't fault it for sound quality and I've heard nothing better. It's a great feeling when your listening to the same tracks you always have and you hear more things in the track evrytime that you've never been able to experience with your mere budget level headphones. For the price you really can't fault them.
The in-built mic and controls are nice to have but feel to high up on the cable. Obviously because of the mic, yet they work (at least on my iPod anyway). Some reviewers have said that these features only work on Apple products, unfortunately I can't comment on that.
The only other con I can put to them is the accessory case which is a bit too tight, they fit, but you feel bad putting them away and it is quite a squeeze . You have to fold them up and they do fit, but still it would have been all the better if it was just slightly larger.
Best of all, for me anyway, we all know Skullcandy don't have the best rep when it comes to durability but these feel truly solid. Doubtless partnering up with Jay-Z's Roc Nation will have helped the build quality but I've not had them long enough to judge the longevity fairly so I won't.
All in all though I am amazed with the product and to top it off they even delivered 2 days before the expected date.
