5.0 out of 5 stars WATCH AND LEARN... AND BE HUMBLED BY THE COURAGE OF SOPHIE SCHOLL, 3 Sept. 2015
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: Sophie Scholl [Blu-ray] (Blu-ray)
Wow! The world should watch this. Most people do not know that the majority of Germans did not vote for Hitler. Think of this film as a quiet and moving companion piece to Tom Cruise's 'Valkyrie'. Sophie Scholl showed true heroism. The cast are wonderful and the direction is measured and tense. No flowery dramatics, or cynical heart-string pulling, this is the real deal. Just life and death, exactly as it was for ordinary principled people, during this horrendous time. Very glad to have found this film.

Starts slow, but don't miss the early episodes, because they do link to later events and it builds into a great series. Some shocking developments. Can't wait for Season 2.

1.0 out of 5 stars Disturbing propaganda - but it showed real acts of bravery, 17 Feb. 2015
I shed a few tears... for the patriots trying vainly to protect their country from vastly better armed invaders. They showed real bravery. Eastwood should have called this 'Corporate Assassin'. We weren't in Iraq to protect our country, but to conquer theirs, for corporate profit.

3.0 out of 5 stars I LOVE THE NEW HAMMERS, BUT...., 5 Feb. 2015
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
I love the new Hammers, almost as much as the old ones. The acting here was classy and I the film had a lot of atmosphere, but the 'documenting events' approach was overdone. I know we were seeing students at work, but I'm not sure it had to feel so much like a student film. The hand held recording of events was limiting and dragged it too far into 'discovered video' territory. The waving around of the camera became frustrating and annoying, fast 'snatch' pans left and right would have made more sense, but there were nice touches, like the hero/cameraman saying he could reduce costs by using cheaper film stock... and he did... but this meant that from then on we had to suffer a rather less than HD picture, which made me wonder if I should have just bought the DVD. I felt 'the big plot reveal', which was actually pretty good, came and went, but the big sfx moment was a shocker. I actually enjoyed it more the second time and (like the far superior 'Woman In Black') this film is amenable to sequels, but if they do one I hope it is more 'Dennis Wheatley' and less 'Blair Witch'.

5.0 out of 5 stars THE BEST SHOW ON TV?, 5 Feb. 2015
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
OK, there can't be three #1 shows on TV, so... 'Sherlock' is the best crime drama... 'Doctor Who' is the best sci-fi... but the best action thriller is 'Arrow'. I just watched Season 1 on Blu-ray, one or two episodes a night. The production values are movie quality, the HD picture is stunning, both the ongoing story and the flashbacks are gripping and truly thrilling. I lost count of the OMG reveals by half way through the season, genuinely shocking twists occur without feeling cynical or manufactured. I quickly became attached to the characters and cared about them. It's obviously a tight knit crew and cast, you get the feeling the actors love their roles, the writers and producers love what they are doing. This is the first super-hero show I've felt was even remotely 'realistic', yet was still a super-hero show. The whole of Season 1 was incredible and the end was just jaw-dropping. Can they maintain the quality? I am open to the emergence of more super-heroes in Season 2, but I'm praying that everyone and their dog doesn't put on a cape and turn the show into Kick Ass 2.....

Quite possibly the best thing on TV. This latest series of 90 minute TV movies is just exquisitely good... and it was nice to see Rupert Murdoch get his comeuppance.

3.0 out of 5 stars Bad, but not THAT bad, 29 Nov. 2014
OK. It is NOT very good, but I would suggest it IS better than that year's official Bond movie, 'Octopussy'. Surely that kind of makes a point.

4.0 out of 5 stars STATHAM STUNS! SHADES OF BOGART AND BERGMAN!, 7 Mar. 2014
I've never really thought of Jason Statham as a great actor, but he certainly delivers in 'Redemption' (aka: Mockingbird). The film is a top notch thriller and a great social commentary too.

Joey (Jason Statham) is wracked with guilt from all the killing he did in Afghanistan, but what can trained killers do, when they return home from wars? Keep on killing? Or drink themselves insensible so that they are no longer a danger to anyone? Joey chooses the latter, but fate drags him back to sobriety and more killing. The relationship between Joey and Sister Christina is like the melding of two damaged souls, it is seriously so well handled it is hard to imagine even Bogart and Bergman playing it better.

A country mile from the more formulaic of his films, but his fans will still find plenty to enjoy. Some realistic fight scenes that don't disappoint. Watching even the toughest looking baddie vs Joey is like watching a mouse vs a mouse trap. Definitely one of the very best films Jason Statham has been involved in. Definitely not your average JS movie, but quite possibly his best.
