4.0 out of 5 stars not their best, 29 Dec 2007
This review is from: Join The Army (Audio CD)
After ST ST and How can I laugh this is a bit of a disappointment. A bit like a skateboarders kids album but still ok

3.0 out of 5 stars ok for testing stereos, 8 Aug 2006
This review is from: Boston (Audio CD)
At the time this sounded great and was used by every HI Fi salesman for making their system sounding better. Now it sounds a little dated and they never seemed like a real group to me, too manufacturered sound. Like Dire Straits too much production, not enough energy. After this album, well after the first side of this album, they deteriorated rapidly into Journey and Kanasas territory and later albums are best avoided.

5.0 out of 5 stars available on CD?, 28 Jun 2006
This review is from: The Photos (Audio CD)
I am not sure that this was ever available on CD. I suggest people look for the double offering The Photos together with the Blackmail tapes on vinyl or cassette and then put it onto CD or Minidisc. Better still write to Epic and demand that they re-release this classic on CD. I am now looking for the 2nd album, there must be a bootleg out there somewhere!

Everyone should have a copy in their collection.

1.0 out of 5 stars change your mortgage and take a packed lunch to work, 18 Mar 2006
Although I agree with the central tenure of this book is that it is easier to save money than earn more, this book is full of padding. Review your mortgage regularly and try to pay it off as soon as possible, try an all-in-one account, where your monthly pay cheque is offset against the mortgage, don't impulse buy, rarely buy new and take a pack-up to work is all it amounts to. Very disappointing.

4.0 out of 5 stars if only it had lasted phorever, 4 Jan 2006
This review is from: Boss Drum (Audio CD)
I saw this band in Manchester at the height of EBG frnzy and did they rock the Academy - a storming gig. The album still sounds good if played loud but a sympathetic remastering with the technology available now could give it a real boost. Still turn it up and let your mind go back to those heady days!!

3.0 out of 5 stars Pure voice but rather bland, 21 July 2005
This review is from: Pure (Audio CD)
Overall it is undeniable that this young girl has a fantastic voice, however the album for me is rather similar in mood throughout. Having said its the ideal present for nanna or granddad, it all being being rather sweet and innoncent. This means that some songs like Who painted the moon black, just don't work as she lacks the emotional expression and I can't imagine her ever having sensed these feelings. Unfortunately although the voice is pure the production is bland, george martin's influence I fear. It's good for playing the baby to sleep though! Finally a word about her cover version of Wuthering Heights by the incomparible singer and songwriter Kate Bush. The rule of covers is don't cover well known tracks by an artist, more obscure material usually works far better, as Joss Stone's producers know well. Kate actually wrote and performed Wuthering Heights at 15! Hayley is incapable of reaching the emotional heights required and the song has in fact been altered to lower the highset notes at the climax of the song which she clearly cannot reach either.

5.0 out of 5 stars mining a rich vein, 16 Nov 2004
This review is from: Soul Mining (Audio CD)
This is without question one of the best jazz/pop cross albums of all time. Intelligent lyrics and catchy melodies with a darkside that allows repeated listening without fatigue. I there is a stand-out track then it would be Uncertain Smile with Jools Holland tinkling the ivories. The remastering is excellent although the drums seem slightly more prominent than I remember although the lyrics are certainly clearer. If you are able to hunt out a cassette version there is a contemporary one with 6 extra tracks which I recall are of the same standard.

4.0 out of 5 stars the cuckoo chirps thrice, 13 Nov 2004
This review is from: The Cuckoo [DVD] [2003] (DVD)
This is a strange film. About a love triangle between a Finn, A Russian and a Lapp, none of whom speak each others language. Set in WWII it is unclear whether in 1940 or 1944. I found the beginning quite confusing as if a few minutes had been cut from the very start. I think it helps to know that some German soldiers have captured a Finn sniper and leave him in no mans land dressed in a SS uniform so he cannot surrender to the Russians. The main focus of the film is not the war, this is just a device to get the 3 protaganists together. The film is very gentle and I loved the female lead Anny Kristiine Juuso, if she is any other films I need to see more. She is cute yet also very sexual. The only problem apart from the start is the strange sexual moaning of the actress which is (unintentionally?) comic and the rather unsatisfactory pen-ultimate scene when the russian and finn soldiers leave our lapp heroine. No sex scenes or nudity so don't waste your money if that is what you want but it is gently erotic and funny.
Why thrice a cuckoo?
1. a cuckoo is a name for a sniper
2. a cuckoo doesn't bring up its own young
3. the heroines name is cuckoo
Could have been a 5 with a little more, made in a hurry and it shows a little, one of the few films I have seen that needs more, rather than editing down.

5.0 out of 5 stars SONY MINIDISC MAGIC, 9 Nov 2004
minidiscs are so much better and robust than cds and this player is superb. why oh why dont sony promote minidisc more and why we can't buy albums on minidisc instead of crap cds i don't know
like betamax minidisc is surely doomed unless sony give up the royalties like phillips did with the cassette tape which let's face it were awful compared with 8 track
come on sony, this is the future
