5.0 out of 5 stars Great unit but beware of the bulb size with existing modifiers, 23 Oct. 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
I ordered this by way of a replacement/upgrade when one of my speedlites failed. I typically work with a 3 light system in the studio. I particularly wanted it for use with my Photosel beauty dish because of the higher power output and the option of a modelling light to make positioning easier. The beauty dish has an optional grid which focuses the light very nicely but at the cost of a massive (about 3 stops) reduction in power.

Bad news: the bulb is massive and the internal reflector of the dish gets in the way. A trip to the hardware store for some longer replacement bolts and additional nuts and the reflector has been moved outwards so that it just about sits between the grid and the bulb. Problem solved and all now working nicely. Do beware, though, of the suitability of this for any of your existing modifiers for that reason.

Otherwise very impressed with this unit. Appears to be built like a brick outhouse, easy to set up and use (despite the fractured English of the instruction manual) and has a terrific power range 6 stops to a maximum GN of 80. It even works with my Yongnuo triggers using the sync cable supplied but will also trigger from another flash using a photosensitive cell.

Photographing Models: 1000 Poses: A Practical Sourcebook for Aspiring and Professional Photographers
by Eliot Siegel
Edition: Hardcover
Price: £20.00

5.0 out of 5 stars Fabulous book and terrific value for money, 25 Dec. 2013
To reiterate comments by other reviewers, this is so much more that just a book of poses. The first chapter includes fairly superficial but helpful advice on lighting styles, camera angles, cropping and most other aspects of a fashion shoot. However the meat of the book, as the title implies, is in the posing sections with advice on the different types of pose, why particular poses work or not, lighting diagrams and a wealth of other information. Key to the value of this book is the input from the many different contributing photographers, each with their own style, whose particular slant on posing and styling offer a wide variety of perspectives on the subject. The book is aimed primarily at fashion photographers but the information given is of great value to anyone shooting portraits of any style.

5.0 out of 5 stars A wealth of good advice to help you get in position to take better photographs, 15 Feb. 2013
The principle of this book is "proper preparation prevents poor performance" and in it Anne McKinnell provides a step by step guide on how to put yourself in a position to take better photographs every time rather than just relying on "luck" to be in the right place at the right time.

Anne's writing style is very readable and conveys her enthusiasm for her subject extremely well. She has a knack of making her points clearly and succinctly without wasting the reader's time with a lot of unnecessary verbiage. If you want to increase your chances of taking killer photos then this book is highly recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars Terrific and stunning images, 15 Feb. 2013
In this book Anne Mckinnell gives clear and concise advice on the full gamut of photography related issues in an easily assimilated style. Starting out with Composition and moving on through Exposure Anne then covers how to get the most out of different types of subject and light finishing with advice on how to reach an audience with one's images, all the while accompanied by stunning examples of her own work which are worth the price of the book in themselves. Very easy to read whilst providing a wealth of useful information and advice.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic fun for all ages, 27 Dec. 2011
This review is from: Go Vacation (Wii) (Video Game)
What a great game! My wife (age 50) and I (56) bought this along with a Wii and some other games this Christmas to encourage our children(ages 20 and 22 who both now spend long periods of time away from home) to spend more time doing things together this Christmas and what a success it has been. Previous reviewers have described the game in detail so I won't repeat that here but the game play has hooked all of us. And with simultaneous play for up to 4 people there are no arguments over whose turn it is next.

We have the balance board and, used in conjunction with the ski slopes at the Snow Resort, this is so much fun. We all enjoyed an entire evening exploring the slopes without even playing any of the games (which are great fun themselves by the way). With the screen split into four you can go off and do your own thing or get together and have a snow ball fight or whatever. There is so much to do! As you complete more games you get extra features (such as a choice between Day/Night). For example skiing down into the resort at night with all of the colourful lights shining is just fantastic.

The attention to detail is amazing. For example, when dog sledding you accelerate by pushing with one foot or the other and your avatar mimics which foot you are using.

If we could give this game 100 stars we would.

4.0 out of 5 stars Fasttrack to effective recording techniques, 22 Jan. 2007
Having been into a professional recording studio with my son and his band I was interested, when he was given this book for Xmas, to see how it compared with (and explained) the work done by the engineers there.

This book is a concise introduction to the main elements associated with its subject matter and explains the necessary techniques, recommended equipment and most common pitfalls in clear languange with very useful tips for those perhaps using a home recording studio to record drums for the first time.

I thoroughly recommend it and am now ordering the Guitars and Vocals books from the series with a view to setting up a home studio to record the band's next CD.

4.0 out of 5 stars Lawrence of Arabia from his own point of view, 5 Jan. 2004
Having been a geat fan of the David Lean film ever since my father took me as a 7 year old boy to see it when it was first released, I had intended to read Lawrence's own account of the events covered by the film for a long time. The book itself is a mixture of autobiographical recounting of the events covered by the film and a travelogue interspersed with almost essay type observations by Lawrence on a wide variety of subjects including the plight of the Arabs, their culture, his own motivation and the wartime life of soldiers in general. Most of the book is descriptive with very little in the way of dialogue and it can at times become very difficult to persevere with, particularly during the author's sometimes extreme moments of navel-gazing. However, the persistent reader is taken on a unique journey with Lawrence through his adventures, middle eastern culture and the spectacular desert scenery of the area. When the time came to part I was rather sorry that the journey was over as Lawrence is, if nothing else, an extremely knowledgeable guide. Taken as an adjunct to the film (which takes a certain amount of artistic licence with the facts) the book deepens one's understanding of its political, geographical and personal context and provides a unique insight into the strengths and weaknesses of the man himself.

5.0 out of 5 stars Get out your Air Guitar, 24 Mar. 2003
This review is from: Tracks 1 (Audio CD)
The energy and raw sound created by Wishbone Ash on their live sets (Live Dates 1,2, and 3 and numerous bootlegs) have always outshone their studio albums and this 2 disk CD is a stupendous cross section of live performances by the band in its various incarnations. From early (1972) versions of The King Will Come and Warrior to recent (2001) recordings of new and old tracks the recording and channel separation quality really bring out the duelling and harmony guitars the band are famous for to the best effect. What more can I say? If you're a guitar music fan buy it!
