5.0 out of 5 stars Trail shoes, 4 Mar 2014

I have owned 3 pairs of Salomon shoes now and find them very hard wearing. It is unusual for the soles to last longer than the uppers with shoes, especially trainers but these do. I also love the quick release lace system. These shoes are light, comfortable and don't look too bad on me. My last pair were trail running shoes with reflective strips where the blue flashes are on this shoe; I climbed up a rock face in them and travelled to many countries and they never let me down once.

This is a live recording and having bought the Blak and Blu CD decided to listen to some more of Gary's music. Thoroughly recommend listening to Gary Clarke Junior.

5.0 out of 5 stars Apartheid revisited, 4 Mar 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This track is a protest song by British rock musician Peter Gabriel and this version by Simple Minds is just as good.
A student leader, he later founded the Black Consciousness Movement which would empower and mobilize much of the urban black population. Since his death in police custody, he has been called a martyr of the anti-apartheid movement. While living, his writings and activism attempted to empower black people, and he was famous for his slogan "black is beautiful", which he described as meaning: "man, you are okay as you are, begin to look upon yourself as a human being".
Even though Biko was never a member of African National Congress (ANC), ANC has included him in the pantheon of struggle heroes, going as far as using his image for campaign posters in South Africa's first non-racial elections in 1994. Nelson Mandela said of Biko: "They had to kill him to prolong the life of apartheid."

Damascus: Taste of a City
Damascus: Taste of a City
by Marie Fadel
Edition: Paperback
Price: 6.61

5.0 out of 5 stars Better than any guide book!!, 8 Feb 2014
An incredible little book - and even more poignant that it was when we used it to find our way around Damascus 6 years ago. The tiny map included with all the little twists and turns it described with very personal memories was so much more useful than any guide book. I adored the book, the stories and the novel approach to the writing. But one wonders what has become of those streets, the families that populated those houses, and those memories now...

2.0 out of 5 stars More One Direction than Daughtry, 29 Nov 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
I am a huge Daughtry fan but this album just doesn't cut it, I'm sorry to say. It's pop not rock and has lost the edge that Daughtry were refining over their previous albums. My friend actually thought I was listening to One Direction and I was ashamed to admit it did sound a lot like I was. These songs are okay, but from Daughtry I expect so much more. The lyrics have no meaning and are downright cheesy in places, and from the band who brought us Over You, No Surprise, Used To, Start of Something Good... it's just a damp squib. Chris Daughtry's voice is wasted here and I sincerely hope they don't continue down this route because it's not who they are.

The Orphan Choir
The Orphan Choir
by Sophie Hannah
Edition: Hardcover
Price: 6.99

2.0 out of 5 stars Only gets going at the end, 4 Nov 2013
This review is from: The Orphan Choir (Hardcover)
I am a fan of Sophie Hannah's gothic psychological suspense, so when I saw that she had written this ghost story as part of the Hammer imprint, I was intrigued and snapped it up.
The opening paragraph sets a tone which raised my hopes for a good spooky story. However, Hannah doesn't maintain the atmosphere and it soon fades into one woman's repetitive and uninteresting crusade against her noisy neighbour. The premise is good but it never gets anywhere until near the very end, when it suddenly seems to pick up pace and the plot moves somewhere. However, I still wouldn't call it spooky or scary or even disturbing.
If you want to read Sophie Hannah, start with the excellent Hurting Distance and stay away from The Orphan Choir.

Guthrie Govan is recognised as a very talented instrumental guitarist, with Bryan Beller on bass and Marco Minnemann.on drums. Very tight band with a bluesy, jazzy and rocky feel to their music.

5.0 out of 5 stars Like father like son., 18 Oct 2013

His sound is immediately recognisable and similar to his father Ali. I have seen him perform live as a three piece with bass and drums, which was an outstanding gig; he has had Derek Trucks play along side him showing he is accepted internationally as a talented West African musician in his own right.
