5.0 out of 5 stars I had pre-ordered this book because I had enjoyed the other three in the series, 28 Mar. 2015

I had pre-ordered this book because I had enjoyed the other three in the series.

Jewell and her team are really up against it in this investigation. The victims are unidentifiable due to decomposition of the bodies, so right from the beginning you know things are going to be complicated. Added to this, thirty years previously, the family who owned the farm at the time, disappeared without a trace. The case was never solved and Jewell's superior, Detective Superintendent Daly, seems intent on doing so.

This book is fast paced and easy to read. The author doesn't get bogged down in lengthy technical jargon, which a lot of modern police procedurals do. Apart from the murder enquiry there are plenty of other things going on to keep the reader interested, intrigued and at times, amused.

I recommend this book.

Excellent product. Makes cake making a breeze. I just throw everything in the bowl and the mixer does the rest. Powerful motor with several settings and it's easy to clean. Comes with 4 different attachments and a good quality spatula, also a useful little cookbook.
Makes good pastry as well. Very pleased, don't know what I would do without it now.

5.0 out of 5 stars Full of intriguing puzzles, 26 Mar. 2014

Another satisfying and enjoyable read in the Elizabeth Jewell series.

Jacob Morven comes to England to give lectures on Canadian First Nations culture and history. Thousands of miles from home, he finds himself the prime suspect in a murder investigation. Morven is a fascinating character. On the surface he appears to be a very spiritual person with telepathic powers and a most unlikely killer but darker aspects of his personality emerge as the investigation progresses. Could he really have murdered some one over a mask with a dubious provenance?

Jewell's new boss, Liam Yeats, who is convinced Morven is guilty, also seems to have something to hide. Added to this Chief Superintendent Daly has mysteriously vanished and Elizabeth, in spite of her best efforts, is finding it impossible to discover why.

In this third book, the author has presented the reader with not just one mystery, but several. The pace never lets up as Elizabeth runs into one brick wall after another trying to solve these enigmas.

I heartily recommend this book.

4.0 out of 5 stars Body in a bird sanctuary, 14 May 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
An interesting location for a murder investigation. At times the atmosphere of this story is quite eerie. Apart from a murder, there seem to be other very strange and mysterious things going on. The sanctuary itself seems to take on a personality of it's own, at times friendly and familiar, at other times desolate and forbidding.

It's the dead of winter and Park Road Police Headquarters is in the grip of a flu outbreak. Morale is low and Elizabeth Jewell is finding it hard to make any progress in finding Harry Steele's murderer.

This is as intriguing as Carole Pitt's previous book 'The Lily Branch'.

4.0 out of 5 stars A well written crime thriller, 6 Oct. 2012
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This book was recommended to me and as it was free I downloaded it. The opening is shocking. There's no getting away from that. Was it a ploy to draw the reader in? I don't know. What I do know is this is a well written crime novel and no more gory than other crime novels I've read.

I like James Oswalds style, it's fast paced and easy to read which keeps the plot moving along nicely. I never felt bogged down with unnecessary padding.

Inspector Mclean is an interesting and complex character and his collegues are well rounded and believable.

I'm looking forward to reading the next book in the series and hope that Mr Oswald will give Inspector Mclean many more cases to solve.
