Beginning ASP.NET 2.0 AJAX (Programmer to Programmer)
Beginning ASP.NET 2.0 AJAX (Programmer to Programmer)

Edition: Paperback
Price: £2.01

3.0 out of 5 stars Applying the examples didn't always go to plan., 13 Sept. 2013

For me, this book would have been great, assuming that everyone is working from the same edition of Visual Studio. In my experience through, as a beginner using the Express editions of VS, some of the examples required some fairly involved rethinking to be applied. Trying to apply examples connecting to a SQL Server database needed different solutions and with examples being based on a wide range of support files, such changes made troubleshooting really tricky.

In these cases, fuller examples of the code, in more self-contained pages would have really helped.

3.0 out of 5 stars OK for the price, a bit fiddly though, 13 Sept. 2013

I used these in a loft and in a garden shed.

The loft one was handy, but the means of attachment (sticky pads) weren't much good on wooden joists. Shame, as they cast just enough light to be used in a loft when you need to use them fairly seldomly.

The one in the shed had a similar problem but also the menas by which the case held on the the base went a bit flimsy and ended up having to be held together with selotape.

For the price though...

It has spent a few Christmases going out on wintry dog walks and was starting to look a bit shabby - then I discovered that the ear pieces are removable and its gone through the wash. Its now as good as new. Happy wifey.

4.0 out of 5 stars The last Microsoft operating system for "dabblers", 13 Sept. 2013

I've just done a few factory resets of old XP machines and uninstalled everything unnecesary. Very satisfying to see them boot in about 15 seconds again. Can't give this item 5 stars because of the cumbersome process for verifying the unit is an upgrade copy instead of an OEM disk.

In another review I mention the failings of a camera case which lead to me dropping a camera into the ocean.
The other side tothe story was that the memory card affected (this item) was recovered and, despite being inoperable for 24 hours, eventually became fully functional and I was able to retrieve my prized holiday pics.

2.0 out of 5 stars Ceramic mugs don't conduct heat well enough, 13 Sept. 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Bought it as a little something extra to throw into someone's Christmas stocking.

Sadly, when warming ceramic mugs (like the vast majority used), they don't conduct heat too well and the little element doesn't really have that great an effect. I used it a few times then gave up.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good fun, shame the competition is over now, 13 Sept. 2013

I got this both as a hardback book and as the iPad/Kindle version. It helped idle away many an hour - it leads you to finding a lot of stuff on Google that you never thought you'd need to know and a few little gems in terms of Google Earth imagery.

Sadly, the competition part is now long since completed. If you're not too interested in winning the prize, still worth a go and at least if you get stuck there's a bit of an Internet community around it with some helpful pointers.

5.0 out of 5 stars Bought as a gimick - now part of my plan to become a millionaire, 11 Sept. 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Bought as a Christmas present - it does what its supposed to and has become the basis for a savings account.

Keep popping loose pound coins in whenever they're weighing down your wallet and there'll soon be enough to take down to the bank

Ours is more than 2 years old now and still works a treat.

2.0 out of 5 stars Not enough depth, 11 Sept. 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
I bought this hoping it would tell me how to do a killer listing on Amazon, how to find out more about the elements available in their XSDs and what the process is for getting products through Amazon's search rankings.

Instead, a lot of common sense stuff without much practical depth.

4.0 out of 5 stars The book title says it all., 11 Sept. 2013

I use Visual Studio 2012 and I'm interested in redeveloping my sites in HTML5. In general terms, the book covers most relevant topics well, but is a bit lacking on timely stuff like semantics and a bit light on CSS3.

Will be a more useful book when I come to make use of a few of the newer HTML5 features, rather than just rewriting old code as HTML5.
