4.0 out of 5 stars Really good, just one issue with the display., 13 May 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
The Xperia Z2 has some awesome specs. It has a Snapdragon 801 CPU and 3GB of RAM, so it never lags. Moving around the OS is fast and snappy. Very pleased.

The camera takes some really nice shots, with plenty of detail and dynamic range. The high resolution means editing and blowing them up is really easy.

The display looks really good. The display is sharp and crisp and the colours are really good and accurate. However...

The Xperia Z2 has an issue whereby if you use the phone in direct sunlight (outside) you will be able to see the display digitiser. It is INCREDIBLY distracting and really unacceptable. If you do a Google search for this issue, you'll see it's reasonably well documented, so it's not just a one-off, all of them seem to be like this. If this sounds like something that would annoy you, please DO NOT buy this phone.

However, if you mainly use your phone indoors, you shouldn't notice this. I notice it because I often use my phone outdoors, in the car, etc. where sunlight is an issue.

However, despite this small niggle, the phone is really, really good. I cannot hesitate to recommend it, but I would recommend you try it out in a shop (e.g. Carphone Warehouse) just to see if the display issue bothers you. Some can see it, others can't, but it it something you should be aware of.

4.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic phone, but issues with build quality/quality control..., 16 April 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This phone arrived today and I'm really enjoying using it. The camera is really good: photos are really clear and sharp. The screen is just beautiful - really crisp. The speakers are AMAZING.

Unfortunately, mine arrived with marks and scratches all over the body. Also, the volume rocker is really loose: it feels like it could fall of at any moment. I am really disappointed as everything else about it is first class. This puts it down a star for me.

I'll get another and hopefully that won't have any problems.

I can still highly recommend this though. I just hope you have better luck with the build quality than I did.

3.0 out of 5 stars Just okay., 3 Jan. 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This is my concise review of the Sony Xperia Z1, in pros and cons form.

Pros:

Sharp display, with accurate colours; touch screen responsiveness is very good
Excellent build quality: device is made from aluminium and glass (front and back) and feels robust and premium as a result
Sony's skin over Android doesn't slow down Android
Sony includes lots of free things with this phone (six movies, including Elysium, a free eBook, a free 60 day trial of Sony's Music Unlimited service and 10 games from PlayStation Mobile)
I think Sony's skin actually adds some functional improvements to Android, e.g.
Available in three colours (black, white, purple) so it will suit a wide range of people
Expandable storage, via the use of a Micro-SD card
Good call quality: callers could hear me clearly and I could here them clearly (even in areas with poor signal, where other phones, i.e. Galaxy Note 3) performed much worse
Good reception, even in poor signal areas
Waterproof: IP58 certified so can be used in up to 1.5m deep (fresh) water for half an hour and will not be damaged if dropped in a puddle, etc.

Cons:

Quite heavy, compared to other phones (particularly those made out of plastic, e.g. Samsung Galaxy S4)
Very, very poor viewing angles (10 degrees of axis and the screen already starts looking washed out)
Glass on the back and the front makes the device more delicate (I feel it will get damaged more easily if dropped)
Average battery life (you can get a day out of it just with medium usage)
Average speaker
Does it really need to be waterproof? How much better could this phone be if Sony didn't spend so much time making sure it was waterproof?
Slow Android updates (still on Android 4.3 - current version is 4.4)
Device isn't seen as top-of-the-line for very long: Sony plans to update it at CES 2014 (just over three months since its release!)
Quite expensive, considering its low storage capacity

Overall, can I recommend this phone? As a phone, yes, but as a smartphone (its primary purpose for existing) no.

3.0 out of 5 stars Good, apart from the signal., 30 Dec. 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
The Galaxy Note 3 is Samsung's latest `phablet' and it's got a lot of buzz. But, the question is: is it any good?

This phone has a 5.7 inch 1080p Super AMOLED touchscreen and it is beautiful. The colours pop massively and watching media on this phone is an absolute joy. The screen responsiveness is fantastic. I had no issues at all. The display is covered with Corning Gorilla Glass 3 for good scratch resistance. However, this will not prevent your phone screen from cracking if dropped, so I'd still recommend getting a good case and putting a good quality screen protector on this phone.

This phone is absolutely fantastic for media consumption, with it's 32GB storage and Micro-SD card slot, you can store all your music, movies, photos on this phone and you still have plenty of space left. The speaker is okay: it's not fantastic, but it is perfectly usable for watching YouTube videos, listening to music. Thankfully, the audio output from the 3.5mm headphone jack is perfect, with no interference at all. A good quality pair of headphones is all that is needed to bring any music, movies to life.

The S-Pen is quite useful. I do like the ability to take quick notes when, for example, talking on the phone. However, the S-Pen feels more like an add-on that a feature that really sells the phone to me. Apart from taking notes and doodling, it doesn't really do anything that your finger can't do. In short, I wouldn't buy this phone for the S-Pen alone.

The camera is very good. It takes 13 megapixel stills which have a good amount of detail and images in low light are pretty good. Noise does start to creep in in really dark scenes, but photos still have good detail. This phone shoots 4K video which is good, but with no optical image stabilisation, video is very shaky indeed. 1080p video does have stabilisation so I found myself using that most of the time. The video produced in this mode was pretty stable, with good colours and contrast. Not perfect, but pretty good.

Call quality was good: no issues to report here. Voices had good definition and voices could be heard clearly. At high volume levels, the earpiece does tend to get distorted however. Loudspeaker quality was average: callers got distorted very easily, even at low volumes and the definition of callers' voices was average at best. On certain calls, I had to ask for callers to repeat certain words, as I could not make them out. It is worth mentioning that call quality very much depends on your carrier and location (for reference, I am using Tesco Mobile, who use the O2 network, in the UK).

My biggest issue with this phone is the signal: in short, it's awful. Putting this phone side-by-side with a Google Nexus 5 and iPhone 4S, these phones will get a signal of approximately -85dB, whereas the Note 3 will drift around between -95 and -101dB. In areas with low signal, you won't even be able to make a call as the phone will register no signal, even if there is one. This appears to be a quite widely-reported issue, with several people reporting similar issues. I suspect this issue is due to the attenae used, they just aren't the best. Samsung really need to up their game here, when they release the Note 4. If you live in a strong signal area, you'll be fine, but if not, I just cannot recommend this device; the signal is just too poor to be usable. It's worth mentioning that I've tried out three Note 3s and they all had this issue.

So, can I recommend this phone? On the whole yes, but if you live in an area with poor signal, I just cannot. If it can't fulfil it's primary purpose of being a phone, then there's no point in having it.

Anker Screen Protector for Google Nexus 5 [3 Pack] Highly-Transparent Anti-Glare Anti-Fingerprint (Matte) with Lifetime Warranty
Anker Screen Protector for Google Nexus 5 [3 Pack] Highly-Transparent Anti-Glare Anti-Fingerprint (Matte) with Lifetime Warranty

5.0 out of 5 stars Really, really good, just a few minor niggles [Edit: not any more!], 30 Dec. 2013
Please note: I was supplied a sample for test and evaluation, and I promise that my review is fair and honest.

The screen protector was very easy to fit. I mucked up the first one due to being in a dusty environment, but the second one went on pretty much perfectly. Pushing out the bubbles was easy, I just used my finger, but you could use the squeegee too.

The cut-outs for the front-facing camera, light sensor and headset speaker are perfect. I really like how only they are cut-out, rather than the whole top portion being open. This means that the screen is perfectly protected. I would say 98% of the screen is protected in total, which is fantastic!

I've never been keen on matte screen protectors, as they tend to ruin the look of the display, but this is probably the best matte screen protector I've ever used. There is a slight loss in brightness, but it's hardly noticeable. The quality of the screen (the perceived resolution) is slightly diminished, but it's barely noticeable. The anti-glare properties are very good: it certainly is much easier to use the screen in direct sunlight. It's not perfect, but it is much better than using a bare screen or a clear screen protector.

The BEST thing about this screen protector is the anti-scratch properties that go along with a matte screen protector. On a normal screen protector, any scratches are easily visible, but with this, they just cannot be seen! In addition, this screen protector doesn't scratch easily at all. I ran some scissors over it (quite lightly) and it didn't scratch AT ALL. I repeat, zero scratches. On a normal, non matte screen protector, these scratches would be easily visible.

I love the lifetime warranty! If the product ever gets damaged, Anker send you another one! No quibbles, no fuss! Their support is fantastic. Any issues you have just send them an email and they'll help you.

There are a few minor niggles. I've used two out of the three screen protectors so far and at the very top, there are what appear to be scratches, or defects in the matte coat. They're barely noticeable, but they are there, if you look at them in sunlight. They are maybe 1mm or two across and they go pretty much all the way along the top, with gaps in between them.

In addition, on the very bottom, there appears to be a bubble that just won't go away. This is certainly not dust, as it is in EXACTLY the same place as the first screen protector I used. The same can be said for the marks at the top.

Furthermore, running your fingers along the protector, e.g. when playing games, does create more friction than a bare screen. It's not a deal-breaker by any means, but it does make it slightly harder to play games, flick pages quickly in Chrome, etc.

However, these very minor niggles will not change my decision to completely recommend this product. It is excellent! The price just seals the deal. If you are looking for screen protectors, look no further than Anker!

Edit: 24 hours after applying the protector, the weird marks at the top of the protector and the little bubble on the bottom have gone. The only thing I did was wiped the screen protector many times with a micro-fibre cloth, so maybe this did it, or they just disappeared. Either way, the screen protector is flawless.

There are a few little scratches, but unlike with a clear protector, where you can see them, they aren't visible with the screen turned on.

I'm now even more happy, so I can recommend this product even more!

3.0 out of 5 stars Pretty good, not pefect., 22 Dec. 2013
This product arrived two days after ordering, so I was impressed with that.

The product was well packaged, however, the shields did arrive with scratches on them!

The back shield went on pretty easily with virtually no air bubbles at all which I was impressed with. Since the G2 is a curved phone, it took over an hour for the shield to adhere to the curves. But, when it did,the stick was very secure indeed.

The front shield was okay to poor. I got many air bubbles when applying it and lots of dust too, which I could not remove with tape like a normal screen protector. The fit wasn't bad, but the holes didn't line up perfectly. There also seemed to be a very large gap around the screen and since the front shield wasn't cut out perfectly, a small bitof the screen (tiny really) was left uncovered. The biggest flaw was that the shield scratched with the included squeegee, which ruined its look when the screen was turned on.

The side shields fitted well, although I did notice that there was an overlap on the bottom. However, I suspect that was my error rather than the product's.

Overall then, this product is okay. I woud recommend you just buying the shield for the body and getting a standard screen protector for the screen.

Would I recommend it? Just.

3.0 out of 5 stars Fine but they scratch REALLY EASILY!, 29 Oct. 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Bubbles are a given and they aren't a problem just with this screen protector. Once you get rid of them, the actual protectors are fine.

However, the protectors aren't cut perfectly so one side is slightly more protected than the other and the worst thing is that these screen protectors scratch INCREDIBLY EASILY. Just putting them on and removing the bubbles (with the screen protector protective film still on) scratches the protector, so it's basically impossible not for the screen quality to be impacted as one can see the marks from the scratches.

I guess that's what you get for the price, hence the 3 stars (rather than 2 or 1).

4.0 out of 5 stars Actually VERY good! [works with 5s except for camera sticker and home button stickers], 12 Oct. 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
The 'stickers' are cut very well and fit the iPhone 99% perfectly. Sure, in places, they are a nanometre off or so, but really, the stickers fit really well.

The stickers are very easy to stick to the phone and easy to remove too.

I actually bought this for my iPhone 5s and this product is fine with it. The only issue is the sticker for the camera part on the back is too big and the home button sticker will stop Siri from working. But, the product wasn't advertised as working with the 5s, so this isn't a negative for the product.

Overall, I'd recommend!

2.0 out of 5 stars Not any better than the '£4 for 10' protectors, 9 Oct. 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
These protectors really aren't worth the extras. They attract finger prints very easily and whilst they do get less bubbles than other protectors, they still bubble. In addition, these protectors are not cut perfectly so if you line up the home button perfectly, the cut outs at the top will not line up.

Therefore, I would either recommend just getting the 'cheap' protectors or something like the Spigen SGP Glas t, which is VERY good (read the reviews).

This product does exactly what it says it will. It's built well and I think it will last for many years of use.

Complaints: I wish it would work without it and the plug included with mine was European, but a simple adaptor (which I'm sure most people have) fixed this, but these problems are really the only things I can say that are even slightly negative.
