My Life Next Door
My Life Next Door
by Huntley Fitzpatrick
Edition: Hardcover
Price: £11.40

5.0 out of 5 stars A touching and true story about more than first love, 28 Sep 2012
This review is from: My Life Next Door (Hardcover)
It looks like Samantha Reed has the perfect life--proof that looks can be deceiving. Her mother, who is a senator and running for re-election has always liked everything in her life--and by extension, her daughter's lives--to be a certain way.Their family home looks more like a show house, she expects nothing but the best grades and every thing should be done with the "perfect family" image she feels her constituents expect in mind. One evening while Samantha is outside her bedroom window on the ledge--after a strange encounter with her mother's new campaign manager--contemplating and watching the Garretts (the next door neighbours and family of ten), Jase climbs into her life. Samantha slowly starts to live her life instead of existing in her mother's.

I thoroughly enjoyed every page of My Life Next Door. I love being able to sense a difference between the Samantha we meet in the beginning and the one on the last page. The relationship between her and Jase is one of the most realistic I've read. It develops and doesn't just happen. Fitzpatrick writes a teenage relationship how it could honestly progress and not an edited version where they have the mind and feelings of someone their age, but don't feel genuine in certain aspects.

Like Samantha, I never saw the twist and difficult decision she has to face coming. Difficult doesn't begin to describe the situation and position she's put in, but then you find out that the major plot has a another twist of its own--raising the stakes that much more.

This debut is a touching and true story about more than first love that ably captures the teenage voice. It's proof that you don't need any supernatural elements to be completely riveted. I can't wait to read what Huntley Fitzpatrick has in store next.

I think fans of Katie McGarry's Pushing the Limits would enjoy this.

Breath of Eyre, A
Breath of Eyre, A
by Marie, Eve Mont
Edition: Paperback
Price: £6.63

5.0 out of 5 stars The best of two worlds, 28 Mar 2012
This review is from: Breath of Eyre, A (Paperback)
Imagine reading a book, feeling a connection with the protagonist and falling for the male lead. Then after a freak accident you wake up as that character.

On her birthday, Emma leaves the party her stepmother planned against her wishes to go for a swim at the beach. When she starts to feel tired and tries to swim back to the shoreline, she realizes the undertow is strong and contemplates how easy it would be to just let go. A distance voice gives her renewed strength and the next thing she remembers is waking up and vaguely recalling someone standing over her. Back at home and trying to get away from concerned whispers about her state of mind, Emma opens a birthday gift -- her mother's favourite book, Jane Eyre.

Emma Townsend is a quiet, kindhearted bookworm who doesn't feel like she belongs anyway. Her father has distanced himself from her since the death of her mother. His new wife thinks Emma is troubled because of her non-existent social life and says she's acting more like her mother each day -- whatever that means. She feels more connected to fictional characters in a book than anybody in the real world and after another traumatic event, she wakes up as Jane Eyre. It doesn't take long for her to feel more comfortable in Jane's world than she ever has in her own. So comfortable, that she's starting to forget her real self.

I really enjoyed A Breath of Eyre and seeing the way Emma's character changes from the version I first meet and the one I leave on the last page. While Emma embraces the character of Jane Eyre and follows her actions at first, the parts I enjoyed the most were when she stops being Jane and starts being herself -- making things unpredictable. With the help of literature she works through her problems and becomes a stronger person for herself and those around her who need help.

A Breath of Eyre is an adventurous and moving debut that gives you the best of two worlds -- contemporary and classic. I love how Eve Marie Mont made me look at a classic in a whole new way. The writing and how the story unfolds while keeping things mysterious is amazing. I look forward to reading how she brings the two worlds together again in A Touch of Scarlet.

5.0 out of 5 stars A richly imagined futuristic sci-fi fairy tale, 12 Mar 2012
Cinder is cyborg and (cut the niceties) a slave. Her stepmother can't stand her and keeps her around as a source of income, which she makes as a mechanic at New Beijing's weekly market. Iko, an android with a programming error that gives her a lively personality and Peony, one of her stepsisters are her only friends. While removing her too-small foot and waiting for Iko to return with a new replacement she meets Prince Kai. He's looking for the girl everybody says is the best mechanic to fix his android Namsi for so-called sentimental reasons. Cinder's cyborg abilities senses His Imperial Highness isn't being truthful, but any reason why he's lying couldn't be very important. Right?

Cinderella is a cyborg! What isn't cool about that and the possibilities it brings to a very well-known story, which makes it new all over again.

I think I'm one of the few that wasn't a fan of the original Cinderella story as well as a lot of fairy tales as a child, but after reading the synopsis for CINDER I knew I'd love it and I do to the point I wish it was the original story. Personally, I don't see CINDER as a retelling. There are definitely moments you sense what book was the inspiration for the story, but Marissa Meyer has a unique take and doesn't follow the guidelines of the original story, which makes things unpredictable. There is also a lot more suspense and action than the story that inspired it. The fact the relationship between Cinder and Prince Kai is still developing and not instantaneous is another of the differences that I really enjoyed.

CINDER is a fascinating and richly imagined futuristic sci-fi fairy tale and I'm really looking forward to the next book in the Lunar Chronicles series.

Embrace
Embrace

Edition: Hardcover

5.0 out of 5 stars An action-packed, intense and unique read that's truly captivating, 6 Mar 2012
This review is from: Embrace (Hardcover)
Violet Eden is not your average teenage girl - even without what awaits on her 17th birthday, a day that she isn't looking forward to since it's also the anniversary of her mother's death. It's always just been Violet and her father. They have a good relationship, but he isn't around much due to his busy schedule. That is one of the reasons Violet is very independent. Her father trusts her completely and she is the type of person who would never misuse that trust in anyway.

Control is very important to her since an incident when she was younger. Since then she has done everything to never feel like she felt that day. During a self-defence class, she meets Lincoln, who has become one of very few important people in Violet's life and continues to train her. She gets the training she wants while fulfilling the desire she has to be with him. If only he had the same need.

Something unexpected happens on Violet's birthday with Lincoln, but before she can fully process what, he runs off. Violet never runs and goes to gets some answers. Nothing could have prepared her for what she finds out. Lincoln a Grigori ' part angel and part human ' and so is she.

I've been anticipating Embrace since I first came across it in 2010. So you can imagine how ecstatic I was when I found out I'd be able to read it. Since I've been anticipating it for so long, I had high hopes and doubts after wanting this book for so long that it would meet those expectations. It didn't, it surpassed them! The mythology Jessica created is exceptional. Some of the myths used are known and the combination of the familiar and what Jessica created and expanded on blurred the lines between fantasy and reality in a way that I never felt the need to stretch my imagination.

I really like Violet, who is just one of many fantastic characters. Each with very distinct personalities that set one apart from the other. When meeting each character, I felt like they had a back-story and didn't start existing the minute their names were written and that their stories would support their actions, which is something that makes them more realistic to me. I look forward to getting to know them better ' the good, bad or the ones in a gray area.

Embrace is an amazing debut. An action-packed, intense and unique read that's truly captivating and will leave you eagerly anticipating the sequel. The excitement of an entire series in one book ' which is just the start. Books like Embrace are the reason I love fantasy so much.

Obsidian (A Lux Novel)
Obsidian (A Lux Novel)

5.0 out of 5 stars Another captivating page-turner by Jennifer L. Armentrout, 16 Feb 2012
Katy is a book blogger - a first for a character in a book. She has just moved to the middle of nowhere in Virginia. Her father died three years ago, but for Katy and her mother the pain of the lost still feels recent. Her mother hopes the move will give them a new start and help them move on. Despite how boring she thought the town would be, she's about to learn nothing could be farther from the truth.

Daemon and Dee are Katy's neighbours. Dee and her become fast friends, but Daemon just annoys her to no end or at least she wished that was the only feelings she felt near him. Daemon's feelings and reactions are very unpredictable, making him hard to read and a realistic character.

I was already a loyal fan after reading Daimon and Half-Blood. There are a lot of paranormal reads, but the Covenant series stood out for me, just like Obsidian does as well. It's YA meets Roswell, but much more interesting then the TV series ever was.

Obsidian is another captivating page-turner by Jennifer that will no doubt be throwing many curve balls in the future. I can't wait to find out how the series continues.

On a Dark Wing (Harlequin Teen)
On a Dark Wing (Harlequin Teen)
by Jordan Dane
Edition: Paperback
Price: £6.43

5.0 out of 5 stars Full of suspense and a conclusion you'll never see coming, 1 Jan 2012
This book had my attention from the first pages. Five years ago, five minutes and one call changed Abbey's life tragically. She can't remember everything that happened, but is certain of one thing--she's to blame and will have to live with the guilt.

Abbey is an outsider. Any attention she does get is negative. She sees dead people, literally. Her home is also her father's business--a mortuary and crematorium. As if being a teenager isn't hard enough. One day she hears a loud caw from a tree. It's a bird, maybe a crow and makes her very uneasy. There are dead bodies in her basement, but this unnerves her more. It should.

Tanner is Abbey's best and only friend. He doesn't fit in either because of an accident years ago that's left in a wheelchair. At first I thought the friendship was one of convenient, but when something devastating happens to both of them, all Tanner can think about is how he can help Abbey.

Nate is about to climb Denali, the highest mountain peak in North America. He's been looking forward to it his whole life. The night before the climb, he has a terrible nightmare that has now overshadowed his excitement with fear and impending doom. He keeps his fears to himself. It was just a bad dream. Right?

This book took me by surprise. I thought I had an idea how the story would unfold, but I was completely and pleasantly wrong. Every time I thought I finally knew, I was proven wrong again and love that. I'm the type of reader that's always thinking ahead, which wasn't possible with On a Dark Wing because of the unpredictability and how engrossed I was with what was happening in the moment. While Abbey is a main character, she isn't the only focus. All the characters had strong personalities that we get to know through alternating points of view.

On a Dark Wing felt like multiple stories with a common thread. Each plot adds to the bigger story and would be interesting on it's own, but make an even more intriguing and captivating one combined.

Full of suspense and a conclusion you'll never see coming, On a Dark Wing is a fascinating story from beginning to end. This is the first book I've read by Jordan Dane, but won't be the last.

Possess
Possess
by Gretchen McNeil
Edition: Hardcover
Price: £10.66

5.0 out of 5 stars Dark, unique & captivating!, 6 Dec 2011
This review is from: Possess (Hardcover)
I'd describe Possess as Buffy the Exorcist. The Exorcist part is obvious and the reason I think of Buffy is because like her, Bridget was always fated to this battle against demons and other forces of darkness. Buffy is aided by a Watcher, who guides, teaches and trains her. Bridget has San Francisco's Monsignor Renault and keeps her extracurricular activities a secret while going about her everyday life.

Possess isn't like anything I've ever read - which is very refreshing to say. Bridget is definitely not the shy type that wants to be rescued. She's a tough, independent and enjoys the feeling of power her ability gives her while fearing what having it makes her at the same time.

I really enjoyed the fact Bridget was the one being pursed by Matt, her former childhood friend who recently moved back to San Francisco and has taken on the role of protector for both her and younger brother Sammy. Unlike Bridget with her combat boots and friends she can count on one hand, Matt is very popular. It was obviously Matt liked her and despite sarcastic remarks and giving him the cold shoulder that Bridget liked him too. I always root for the childhood friends that now have the possibility of being more.

Possess< is a dark, unique and captivating fast-paced story. I enjoyed the unsettling feeling I got reading it. The vivid descriptions helped me picture every scene effortlessly in my mind and the unpredictable plot kept me in a constant state of suspense that only increased from page to page. The first thought I had when I turn the last page was that I want more of this world Gretchen McNeil created. I really hope this isn't the last I hear of Bridget and Matt.

Starcrossed
Starcrossed
by Josephine Angelini
Edition: Hardcover

5.0 out of 5 stars A brilliant and captivating adventure with drama, romance and action, 11 Nov 2011
This review is from: Starcrossed (Hardcover)
I don't know where to start. I'm still trying to get my head around everything that happens - which is a lot. This isn't the type of book that you just enjoy, finish and move on from - it keeps you thinking, analysing everything that happened and anticipating how the story will continue.

I really enjoyed how Josephine Angelini took Greek mythology and turned it into a contemporary story. There is a lot to ancient literature and while I was looking forward to what it could bring, I was afraid I might get caught up in remembering all the facts instead of enjoying the story. It couldn't of been easy bringing the modern and ancient together, but it is wonderfully written and made the union seem effortless.

Helen is so sweet, shy, unnaturally strong, fast, intelligence and "turn your head" gorgeous. She hates the attention she gets and just wants to stay under everybody's radar. All you want to do is protect her, which is one of many reason why I love her best friend, Claire. They have know each other since they were babies and Claire isn't afraid to say whatever she thinks and stand up for Helen without ever being asked. Lucas has all the same attributes as Helen except he's very comfortable with who and what he is, but not in an obnoxious way.

I love all the characters and how each of them have clear personalities and important roles in the story that make them stand on there own instead of just existing for the sake of supporting the main characters.

I'll admit that while a lot of people think about the story of Helen and Paris as an epic romance, I thought they were two of the most selfish people in history. So can you explain to me why I'm hoping that despite what will happen if Helen and Lucas end up together, I'm suddenly rooting for them, damning the consequences?

This is a brilliant and captivating adventure with drama, romance and action that keeps you on edge and will leave you greedy for more. I can't believe this is Josephine Angelini's or as I now think of her after reading Starcrossed - *Moirae's debut. Where has she been hiding! Probably on an island south of Cape Code, Massachusetts or Olympia.

*Moirae: often called The Fates (Clotho, Lachesis, and Atropos). The goddesses, who controlled the destiny of everyone, by weaving with the thread of life.
