3.0 out of 5 stars This series is not bad. It's entertaining, 12 May 2016
This series is not bad. It's entertaining, but quite daft. I suppose James Nesbitt did this show to pay for the upkeep of his hair transplants!!

1.0 out of 5 stars type of dance music that your aunt would like. People who find proper dance music too heavy ..., 5 April 2015
This review is from: New Eyes (Audio CD)
It was only a matter of time before a Cambridge educated group decided to incorporate classical instruments with dance music. The end result is all a bit pedestrian, pleasant with zero grit or bite. These songs are not bangers for clubs. They are more of a collection of songs for adverts on TV. It's the kind of pleasant, dinner party, type of dance music that your aunt would like. People who find proper dance music too heavy will love this. Too weak for me, and strictly for those who shop at Waitrose!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Highly original zombie drama!!, 8 Mar. 2015
Really good, original take on the zombie genre. Great, naturalistic performances from all of the actors. It's such a shame that this series only lasted for two very short seasons. This series should have gone on for a few more seasons, as it really has a lot going for it in terms of acting, sfx, plot and ideas. Two thumbs up from me, highly recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars Zombies, terror, gore and a whole lot more!!!, 7 April 2014
The walking dead just keeps getting better and better each season. This show goes way beyond the usual zombie splatter fest clichés. The acting, the pacing, the visual FX, plot and character development are all superb. This show actually makes you care about characters, who have all had their lives turned upside down. I am a huge zombie fan anyway, so there is a slight bias here. However, the mark of a great show is the ability to attract viewers who are not normally fans of the genre. The walking dead does this ten fold and I thoroughly recommend it. I have just finished watching season 4 of this show on TV, and good lord, its another gem!! Anyway, enjoy and get involved in this terrific zombie apocalypse. Don't forget to secure all doors and windows!!

1.0 out of 5 stars Poor!!, 30 Nov. 2013
This review is from: Man of Steel [DVD] (DVD)
Here are some words to describe this effort: Poor script, huge amount of plot holes, boring, predictable, tedious CGI fight scenes, hammy acting, sorely disappointing!! Watching this was a waste of time. On a plus side though, there is some comedy gold in here, such a Michael Shannon as Zod shouting "I will find him!!" He is also rocking a French crop haircut, not seen on anyone since 1990!!

1.0 out of 5 stars Looks good, that's about it!!, 30 Nov. 2013
An almost mute Ryan Gosling returns again with 'Drive' director, Nicolas Winding Refn in this neon lit, Thailand set drama. This film is about revenge in the most basic and simplistic of terms. There is barely a plot/storyline, not even enough to fill a post it note. Check this out: Gosling's idiot brother Billy brutally rapes and kills an under-age prostitute before being caught by the Thai police. Lieutenant Chang arrives on the scene before informing the girl's father, Choi Yan Lee. Chang allows Choi to beat Billy to death, but cuts off the man's arm for allowing his young daughter to remain in the business of prostitution. Gosling then seeks revenge for his brother. The visuals are stunning and every scene looks great, but the lack of depth makes it all feel very hollow. Some have said that this film is art house project, but I call it fart house and not very good. This is a film that truly illustrates style over substance. Only god can forgive this being made!!

5.0 out of 5 stars This is how you do it!!, 10 Nov. 2013
This review is from: Watchmen (1-Disc) [DVD] (DVD)
This movie is a graphic novel/comic book adaptation, and those who are expecting a typical super hero story about goodies and baddies will be sorely disappointed. This film is essentially a conspiracy thriller and the consequences of being a costumed crime fighter. Like the graphic novel it is violent, graphic and definitely not for kids. The visuals are stunning and there is some really good acting and character development. Some have found the Watchmen a bit hard to follow and also little complicated. Some have also accused the film to be a tad disjointed, but despite these minor things, this is still the best comic book/graphic novel adaptation ever made. Great, just great!!

1.0 out of 5 stars Clash of the lame!!, 10 Nov. 2013
This film has a lot of action and the CGI effects are okay, but I felt that there isn't much meat or depth here for adults. Not a good film by any means and it's essentially a bunch of fight scenes with and terrible pacing and zero sense of adventure. Kids would probably dig this a lot more. I actually saw this at the cinema and felt truly gutted after wasting my money. This film should have gone straight to DVD and bypassed the cinemas completely. Still, there is some comedy value to this film though, such as Liam Neeson as Zeus saying "release the kraken" in an Irish accent, hilarious and it cracks me up every time.

1.0 out of 5 stars Must try harder next time!!, 25 Oct. 2013
Some touted this as the closest UK drama/equivalent of the USA drama 'Boardwalk Empire', which immediately made me doubtful and the alarm bells started ringing!! You know that old saying: "don't knock it until you have tried it" made me think let me at least let me give this series the benefit of doubt. For me this show is too much of a mixed bag. It is beautifully shot and most frames are like works of art. The actors and the acting are fine, but the characters and the script feel very one dimensional, a bit hammy at times, lacking any real bite, punch or nuance. At times Peaky Blinders is like watching an expensive, elongated music video by an indie band who have decided to go retro. Visually, there are too many pointless slo-mo's and the regular use of contemporary music (I'm sure I heard the white stripes in there!!)added to the shows lack of authenticity. I don't understand why you would soundtrack a period piece like this, maybe the director wanted to combine a retro yet modern feel? For me, it did not work and it and I found it quite annoying. This is supposed to be set in the past, but it feels way too contemporary to be truly authentic. Not at any point did I feel that I was transported to that period of time. I found myself not caring about any of the characters and the story is lacklustre at best. Maybe Peaky Blinders would work a bit better if it had time more to grow and be treated as a serious drama, as opposed to just it just looking nice. As it stands Peaky Blinders is like watching a televised stage show. It had promise and all the ingredients for a great drama were there, but it turned out to be very underwhelming.
