A User's Guide To They Might Be Giants
A User's Guide To They Might Be Giants
Price: £5.99

5.0 out of 5 stars Brooklyn's best, 14 Sept. 2011
Loved their early LP's way back in the last century - coming back to them after some 20 years, I am surprised to find that they sound so great and to the point today. And you learn a lot, too - about the sun, Belgium's greatest painter and USA's 11th president, for example.

2.0 out of 5 stars Not the Band..., 14 Sept. 2011
This review is from: Robbie Robertson (Audio CD)
No, and not exactly what I remembered this to be. And today it does sound pretty dated - early Band recordings sound infinitely fresher!

5.0 out of 5 stars What a great great band, 14 Sept. 2011
The title says it all... Quite an impossible thing to boil the CVB work down to one CD, and there are bound to be gems missing (and being so "eclectic", I doubt many people would agree on one collection). Still, Joe Stalin's cadillac would have made this a six-star item!

3.0 out of 5 stars OK-ish, 14 Sept. 2011
This review is from: Empire Builders (Audio CD)
By no means up there with the best works of Ringenberg, but still fairly interesting. Some might see his touching upon more political issues as a positive sign, others (I) would call it naive and clumsy. Still, a collection worth listening to.

5.0 out of 5 stars not just a producer, 15 Mar. 2011
This review is from: True False Identity (Audio CD)
More than 2 decades after the "height" of his career (that is, when he did the album-tour-collaborate with famous people thing), here is what stands out as maybe his most complete piece of work ever. He was always a bitter, witty and tender songwriter, and you have it all here, to the brim. No soft edges. "Fear country" might be just the best thing he's done since he showed how "Diamonds are a girl's best friend" was actually supposed to be performed

5.0 out of 5 stars Concise!, 15 Mar. 2011
Is it possible to cram in the origins, development and fall of the NSDAP in udner 200 pages, and still tell you something new and thought-provoking? Yes - this book does it! An extra plus for the commented selected bibliography

1.0 out of 5 stars Just listen to the record!, 24 Nov. 2010
This might be of some minor interest for those of you interested in knowing which mikes were used on what takes, and why the snare drum sounds a particular way halfway one take of some song or other... For the rest of us, this says nothing we didn't already know/didn't have the slightest interest in knowing in the first place. As it actually provides very little new info on the recordings, it spends time on irrelevant side stories provided by those who actually bothered to speak to the author. Avoid!

5.0 out of 5 stars Disturbing entertainment, 21 Oct. 2010

A great writer, with a subject that in less sensitive hands would have become a more straight-forward "good against bad" story.
