I enjoyed this book, although was a little disappointed at the outcome, as there were many possible ways the story could have ended. The chosen ending seemed both somewhat unlikely and rather an anticlimax after all the build up. I enjoyed the development of both of the main characters.

This author is a recent discovery, but I have already read and enjoyed three of his novels. The characters build slowly but are really well developed during the course of the book. A very 'readable' style. I enjoy the Japanese setting, although it is a country I have never visited. I found there was less of a plot than 1Q84 but it looks more deeply at characters motivations and feelings. It tells of a young man's transition from adolescence to adulthood. I look forward to reading more of Murakami's work.

I really enjoyed the rather bleak view of the future and would compare it to the likes of 'Brave New World', 'The Handmaid's Tale' and Dorris Lessing's 'Mara and Dan'
The idea of chroming criminals was an interesting solution to overpopulated prisons, which made you question the definition of crime. Like '1984' it portrayed a world of increasing state serveillance. A good plot kept the story moving throughout the book.
