4.0 out of 5 stars tell all, 31 Mar 2012
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
some people, well..a LOT of people, here seem to be extremely upset that some of their favorite hollywood myths get smashed in this book :-)..;well, I have no doubt what mr Bowers tells is true and that what he COULD have told is even more upsetting for a lot of so called fans....there you go folks, hard to stomach that Tyrone Powers liked poop sex with boys or that Spencer Tracy actually DID prefer a dick over Katharine Hepburn ? :-)..such is life....but you can still believe in fairy tales if you want religion you can take it or leave it and ignore the truth if that makes you feel better but facts are facts...need a refill ? do cum again !:-)

1.0 out of 5 stars a joke, 30 April 2011
let's hope you haven't spend your hard earned money on a 3-D tv yet....once more they trie to fool us into buying the same films again and again and again because they have , yet again, been's 3-D!!!! got to have a gimmick, the song says, but that's all it is : a can look at it from all sides, put it on its head and turn it inside out : this ISN'T the same as the talkie revolution and no, it isn't the color revolution either! if it was we would have all been watching 3 D films for 60 years, because that's when it first tried to become the newest trend and failed, and it will fail again, zillions of marketing dolars notwithstanding.

5.0 out of 5 stars mad men..., 18 Oct 2010
I was wondering how long it would take before an executive somewhere would realize that this film is a perfect tie-in for Mad men and why on earth isn't there a special edition with Robert Morse doing a commentary and a documentary about the style /time and world this film (and indeed even more so the original broadway show) is reflecting.....helllooooo? is anybody listening ? You can make some CASH here....maybe that will wake you!

4.0 out of 5 stars great ENGLISH speeches in history, 15 Aug 2010
great readings, great packet by Naxos, as always...but to call this "Great speeches in History" as if this should amount to a sampler of speeches worldwide through history is quite frankly a farce...80 % of the speeches presented here are by english historical figures, some only relevant to english history...(or british if you prefer), a few greeks and the odd frenchman are trown in for good measure but overall the bias is I know that for the english there is little else that matters in world history besides the navel staring at their own glorious past, either at home or in those funny foreign domains they conquered, but next time leave the world alone and just call it "Great British speeches in History", ok ?

3.0 out of 5 stars what's the point ?, 5 July 2010
Ok, I saw this show last week, and I wasn't expecting much..except that some said the physical production was quite lovely but the book and score rather mediocre.
Anyhow : I found it quite the opposite..I was rather dissapointed at the random and uninspired sets and the failed chance to do anything with such a fascinating place as Coney island and the 3 big parks there at the beginning of the 20 th century..on the other hand I was very impressed by the lead actor who has a voice that leaves you breathless(what an improvement over Michael Crawford's attempts at vocalising!), also the rest of the cast turns in a fine least THEY were worth the money! As for the score itself, well, I'm not a A.L.W fan at all, but I always have to admitt to the fact that Phantom was his best show and an inspired piece of theatre at that...a lovely shaped individual piece of, well, I suppose. So the new songs here are what you expect from him, bombastic melodies, rotten lyrics(unless you enjoy a good laugh at the lyricist's expense this kind of floperetta lyrics always bring tears to my, not of joy! Ah but for only one Lorenz Hart of Ira Gershwin..oh well..we 've regressed a long way since the golden age of musical theatre...!)but never so bad it hurts and never so dull it puts you in a coma...praise indeed!:-)
Now there is one other thing : WHY? what is the point of this show? Why should anyone want to do it, surely the Phantom was a well rounded story, it had tension, suspense, romance, action, and a heartfelt story of the beauty and the beast. Now what do we have here in Love never dies : hardly any tension, the story is predictable from the first ten minutes, no action(unless you count the last 20 minutes), characters that act in not very intelligible ways, motivations that are very strange, and an ending that is so commonplace it reminds you of a movie of the week rather than grand opera...
people around me in the theatre reacted mostly in a lacklustre way, one comment being repeated several times : "the one thing this show does is that it makes you want to go see phantom again.." ..and in fact that's how the original Phantom is now advertised in the London subway : " come and see the BRILLIANT original"...implying the only so-so quality of the sequel I suppose...So in the end of nothing else I guess this show works as a..really usefull... marketing tool to boost the sales of "the Phantom of the opera" ? :-)

5.0 out of 5 stars Fred Quimby ???, 10 Feb 2009
the amazon review above talks incessantly about Fred Quimby this, Fred Quimby even credits him as creating Tom and Jerry's best cartoons!!!! DUH ??......Fred Quimby my friends was a former salesman who knew next to nothing about cartoons, was assigned the post of head of the animation department of MGM after the Hugh Harman-Rudolf Ising cartoons proved too costly and stayed on in this post through the glorious years of Hanna and Barbera, his most obvious personality characteristic was that he had no sense of humour and of course he collected all the oscars these classic cartoons earned and for which he had no credit whatsoever....had to get this of my chest :-)

4.0 out of 5 stars much better than expected..., 7 Sep 2008
I have to go against the grain here and state that "the emperor waltz" is a much better movie than it is given credit for, even by Wilder himself..."connecticut yankee " is a formula film, but "emperor.." is a very witty Wilder film that is a pastische of his own austrian world of his youth..sly, often ironic and hilarious in its musical numbers. Wilder obviously wanted to make a Lubitsch-like ruritanian fantasy with all the irony and european humor he could muster in this Crosby vehicle. Crosby is largely Crosby, muttering his well rehearsed "improvisations" written by his own team of writers..and he gives his audience what it wants..;which is often very droll and makes a nice contrast to the near sophistication of the Wilder -Brackett script....this is far from schmaltzy but then it is not quite über-Lubitsch either's just a lot more entertaining than I had anticipated and shows that Wilder often put down his own work far too harshly...just have a look and you'll be surprised by the fresh and VERY firmly tongue-in-cheek "odeur" of it all....a delight!

2.0 out of 5 stars the spastic theologian, 19 July 2008
I love Richard Dawkins....for he has finally said what few others have dared : that theologians are self-professed doctors of a non-existing science! And they HATE it, are positively convulsing in spastic twirls, angry as hell and fuming at the mouth....writing books left right and centre to refute! There will be whole rain-forrests felled for the amount of paper waisted on Jezuit -style arguments in pile after pile of books trying to "refute" what is so obvious and so self-evident that even a child can understand it : "God" is a thing created by mankind to ease its fear of death....a hokus -pokus thing that is used to validate both good and evil and is so totally alien to science that any well-educated intellectual(but also the sane brained layman) cannot do but refute its so called "existence"...sure, some will write books, some will lament hipocritically at the altar of their cosy institute of conservative "values" but in the privacy of their bed late at night they shiver and turn because they haven't got a clue...not a single shred of evidence....

The Tudors: Complete Season 1 [DVD] [2007]

5.0 out of 5 stars inacurrate ?, 12 July 2008
so the writers have taken liberties with history ? MMM, have you seen any of the other(many) film and tv versions of Henry's life ? There are many more liberties and CERTAINLY more simplifications least this series has the leasure and time to give more historical figures and events their due than ANY other filmed version of this monarch's life ever has! A full 10 episodes and he hasn't even married Ann's soap, of course, but so was "I, Claudius" and aren't all out lives a long big drawn out soap anyway...only MUCH more boring than Henry's :-)
Agreed, the actors all look as if they've just stepped out of a model -of -the-year catalogue and it's all too clean and not gritty enough...but then Jonathan Rhys Meyer's eyes make up for all of that and I'm sure Henry would have been delighted !(a bit like Cole Porter was when Cary Grant portrayed him...)...Had Hans Holbeyn painted him looking like Meyers he would have gotten a big fat bonus ! :-)

5.0 out of 5 stars mezmerizing film..., 13 Sep 2007
This is a mezmerizing film, stunningly acted and very chilling with some surprising twists and unlike SO MANY reviewers on amazon .com who seem to believe that a review is their turn at a short story or give full revelation of the film's plot, I will not add anything the movie and find out for yourself what it is about !
