5.0 out of 5 stars And they 'volunteered' for this !, 19 Jun 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
A 'tour' was 45 operational trips........15 more than normal to take advantage of their experience .......
Thoroughly enjoyed this book with never a dull moment, but plenty of sadness at the loss of many brave young crews.

Think I paid just one penny for this book in 'new condition' delighted to find that it had been signed by the author and six of the aircrew featured in the book.....brilliant

2.0 out of 5 stars OK FOR SOME, 19 Jun 2014
Does 'exactly what it says on the cover'......tells 'all about the boys'....I was hoping that this book would have been full of tales about what the the aircraft was like to fly....'hairy moments' 'carrier landings' etc etc. but alas book was all about 'The Boys' their youth, their education, joining the services, their postings, their promotions........dominated by many personnel group photos, with just a few previously not seen photos of the aircraft.
Perfect..... if you were part of the Buccaneer fraternity, having perhaps ;- manufactured, flown, or been part of a squadron, this book may have been ideal, but as a "Plane Crazy" enthusiast with no military service or interest whatever, found this 'fairly heavy going 'and gave up around the half way stage.............
Did ...'exactly what it said on the cover'

3.0 out of 5 stars O K, 29 May 2014

Had hoped that small booklet would have had most of its content devoted to aircraft and operational stories......almost two pages devoted to a "musical concert party" with the names of those appearing//starring being duplicated........we are told about a cook cutting the tip of his finger off.......

Just a few words tell us that 34 different aircraft were operational at its peak around 1957/1958.....a complete list of these types would have been far more interesting

Having every edition of "Action Stations " and anything I could get hold of regarding military airfields, this was something different

5.0 out of 5 stars sent to be slaughtered, 29 Jan 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Unbelievable and at times sickening reading...with 96 aircraft and most crew lost on a raid that achieved very little damage.....the known weather forecast was enough and cancel the raid ......................
One German night fighter actually destroyed 4 Halifax and 4 Lancaster aircraft within a thirty minute period using their upward slanting cannon.......................
Book is excellent reading .....................have since bought "The Peenemunde Raid" and "The Berlin Raids" by the same author....................
Enjoy

4.0 out of 5 stars TOTALLY UNDERESTIMATED, 24 Jun 2011
Now living in East Anglia and with a strong interest in local wartime airfields, I had seen the occasional brief mention about Tempsford and in my mind I had pictured "a smallish, possibly grass airfield making the occasional Lysander trip with a secret agent"....How very wrong I was...
I found this book to be a total revelation about the importance and value of this secret airfield ....not only Lysanders, but...'40 Halifaxes delivered from Radlett' Stirlings ,Whitleys, wellingtons, Hudsons ...etc ..etc,
With more than enough to arouse my interest and 'Er indoors' wanting to visit the local RSPB, we made the pilgrimage earlier this week and eventually managed to find what little remains.
Part of one of the runways in decent condition is "coned off", but the highlight was being able to enter "The Barn" standing as a memorial to those who never returned...
Book was strong enough to persuade 'a very old git' to make the journey and try to imagine what it was like around 65 years ago...
I clearly enjoyed the book..

5.0 out of 5 stars ALREADY A SATISFIED USER, 14 Aug 2010
Already using this myself,
Bought for the 2 young Grandchildren who were complaining about slow PC's and constant "error" messages..........
Installed on both machines, seems to have worked well, leaving them delighted with the improvements and much smoother running machines....
Very small price to pay to see the smiles on their faces
Looks like...... 'it does what it says on the box'

5.0 out of 5 stars OUTSTANDING, 22 Feb 2010
Having read many books giving the history of individual aircraft types, this one certainly stands out, well written, very'easy and enjoyable reading' with so much interesting information.....never imagined that there was so much to learn about the Venom...................The RAF appeared to consider that aircraft were becoming 'past their sell by date' after only 700 hrs flying................The early 'wing failures'.............The many lives lost before aircraft were fitted with lightweight ejection seats............New aircraft were with squadrons for as little as 17 months before they were consigned to the scrapheap.............Some new aircraft only made their delivery flight to maintenance units where they languished until they were used as 'maintenance airframes' or scrapped........
Quite an amazing history, must be one of the better books covering 'aircraft types'..............Well done!

5.0 out of 5 stars LIGHTNING HISTORY. NICE ONE TIM !, 7 Aug 2009
First saw the book at Duxford visitor centre where initial inspection was enough for me to order the book from the above mentioned Amazon special offer at a more realistic price.

Delighted with book and the many previously unseen photos (several in colour) plus a few almost forgotten favourites of an aircraft that was becoming "fuel critical" as soon as the engines were started.

Book is 'bright and interesting' with a history of each individual aircraft, so many were lost, some with less than 100 flying hours, although just a few did achieve more than 4000 hours

An enjoyable book.

Highly recommended.....only regret that I was too late for an autographed copy

Eagerly awaiting latest book from Tony Blackman "Test Pilot my extraordinary life"
