Bulworth [DVD] [1999]
Dvd ~ Warren Beatty

4.0 out of 5 stars Warren Beatty excels in the directing seat... and as Bulworth, 15 Feb. 2012
This review is from: Bulworth [DVD] [1999] (DVD)
I'd read quite a bit about this movie over the years and finally jumped on the chance to pick up a cheap copy and give it a watch. If I'd have known just how funny this was I would have picked it up years ago. Warren Beatty directs and stars as Senator Bulworth who signs himself up to a $10m life insurance policy and then gets a hitman to kill him. Before he is killed he decides at a church meeting in a predominantly poor black area that he will tell it like it is and that the politicians don't care about them. He suddenly finds himself gaining popularity and he starts rapping about everything and even takes drugs at a club whilst trying to cancel the impending hit. Halle Berry is very good as Nina, who helps him on his campaign but is also being paid to kill him, unbeknown to him. Bulworth is a funny political film that actually brings up some valid political points and is definately coming recommended from me. 4/5

3.0 out of 5 stars Enjoyable enough, 15 Feb. 2012

I wasn't sure what quite to expect with this one, buying it purely on the basis of it co-starring Drew Barrymore and Luke Wilson. It actually follows a group of friends who get caught up in robbing a bank on the day of Wilson's wedding to Barrymore. Also starring Dean Cain, Andy Dick, Sean Patrick Flanery and Brad Dourif the cast is a rather mixed bag. Nobody puts in particularly great performances but Cain is the best of the bunch with Andy Dick being the worst and definately miscast. The plot is enjoyable enough, if formulaic and the comedy takes a backseat to the action in a good way. This isn't anything new but is worth a look for fans of the cast. Rent it. 3/5

Border Blues [DVD] [Region 1] [US Import] [NTSC]
Border Blues [DVD] [Region 1] [US Import] [NTSC]

1.0 out of 5 stars Horrendous, 15 Feb. 2012
I bought this because I am a closet Eric Roberts fan and although he is an integral part of the story here and features plenty, there is little action and the film in general is a complete incoherant mess. The story is full of holes and seems hastily rewritten during filming, I would say Gary Busey is underused but his character is a waste of time, the effects of the bomb at the start look as though they were made by a five year old (I've seen better on homemade youtube videos) and the acting is incredibly poor all round. Seemingly, this had a $10million budget but god knows what they spent on? Perhaps Roberts/Busey made big money for their appearance and the other $9million went on a hell of a wrap party? Easily the worst film I have seen in 2012 so far. Skip it. 1/5

John Cusack has long been a favourite actor of mine and I really didn't ever expect him to make a comedy that was anything like Hot Tub Time Machine. Here is joined by Rob Corddry, Craig Robinson and Clark Duke as they go back in time in a hot tub. Chevy Chase cameos as the hot tub repair man and has some quite funny scenes but Crispin Glover steals the show for me as the hotel porter who Corddry is just waiting for to lose his arm. The story is nothing special but it is a lot of fun, and despite a slow section in the middle the laughs come often. Favourite parts for me include the scene between Corddry/Robinson in the bathroom after losing their bet, Robinson singing the Black Eyed Peas and the scene where the gang go to get the Chernobyl drink back from the ski lodge. Recommended. 4/5

Miracle On 34th Street [DVD] [1994]
Miracle On 34th Street [DVD] [1994]
Dvd ~ Richard Attenborough
Price: £3.00

4.0 out of 5 stars In God we trust!, 15 Feb. 2012
What, with Christmas a meer eleven months away I decided it was time for a little Christmas cheer, so I stuck the 1994 version of Miracle on 34th Street into my DVD player. Having seen the movie several times over the years, I knew exactly what I was getting and it has to be said that Mara Wilson is excellent as the young Susan, who has her doubts about the big fat man himself. The best performance here is easily Richard Attenborough as Santa though as not only does he look the part, but he has the screen prescence required to play the part. I still need to check out the original, but this is recommended. 3.5/5

What Happens In Vegas [DVD] [2008]
What Happens In Vegas [DVD] [2008]
Dvd ~ Cameron Diaz
Offered by best_value_entertainment
Price: £2.92

3.0 out of 5 stars Lake Bell and Rob Corddry are the real stars, 15 Feb. 2012
The focus on What Happens in Vegas is clearly on Kutcher and Diaz and whilst Diaz is her usual self, and Kutcher slightly better than he usually is, the real stars of the movie are Lake Bell as Tipper and Rob Cordry as Hater. There is a reasonably good supporting cast including Treat Williams, Queen Latifah, Dennis Farina, Zack Galifianakis and Krysten Ritter who often outshine the main cast but Diaz/Kutcher still hold their own. Of course, the movie follows your basic plot and the outcome is obvious from the start but there are enough funny moments to keep you entertained. My favourite part is Rob Cordry in the courtroom towards the end of the movie. Rent it. A generous 3/5.

4.0 out of 5 stars Surprisingly entertaining, 15 Feb. 2012
As soon as I see that a movie stars a wrestler or a UFC fighter, my expectations are generally middle of the road and I expect a typical DTV actioner with lots of focus on fight scenes and not a lot on the plot. However, I have seen John Cena in a couple of movies and I do find he his one of the better wrestlers come actors and he helps make 12 Rounds an above average cat and mouse action movie. Cena is the only well known name involved in the movie outside of director Renny Harlin, but the supporting cast are good enough to keep the scenes ticking over even if they are nothing great. I found the special effects to be of high quality and the action scenes well shot so as a popcorn movie, this comes recommended. 3.5/5

4.0 out of 5 stars Frost/Pegg do it again, 15 Feb. 2012
This review is from: Paul [Blu-ray] (Blu-ray)
Another movie with hilarious duo Simon Pegg and Nick Frost, although this time without Edgar Wright's involvement but at least it was written by Pegg/Frost. This shows, because the script is sharp and has plenty of funny moments and although there are plenty of better candidates around to voice Paul, Seth Rogen wasn't a bad choice. Kristen Wiig, who I often find hit and miss, was very good in this and I found her character added a lot of fun to the journey, and I especially liked the bumbling FBI agents played by Joe Lo Truglio and Bill Hader. The biggest surprise was kept for the excellent cameo by Sigourney Weaver however. Funniest part of the entire movie for me is when Paul brings a bird back to life and then quickly eats it or when Sigourney Weaver is crushed by the spaceship doors. It isn't as good as Pegg/Frost's previous attempts but I still have to recommend it. 4/5

3.0 out of 5 stars Almost a guilty pleasure, 15 Feb. 2012

First things first, if you've ever seen a Syfy Original creature feature then you pretty much know exactly what you are going to get here. Swamp Shark is a bad film, but so what because it is a little enjoyable and fun. The acting is budget-TV-movie as should be expected with the better cast members being Kristy Swanson and Lance Nichols. The effects are quite poor but still fun enough for what it is and the final scene is actually quite funny and a new way of killing a shark, rather than the 'lets copy Jaws' copout. If you enjoy low budget creature features, you could do a lot worse than this almost guilty pleasure. Low end rental. 2.5/5

2.0 out of 5 stars Style over substance, 15 Feb. 2012
This review is from: Gamer [DVD] (DVD)
Gamer follows an interesting idea of giving criminals a chance to leave prison providing they survive being a 'character' in a shoot 'em up game, however, if they lose, they die. It does remind me heavily of the superior Schwarzenegger movie The Running Man, but with the main difference being that Gamer is based on a mixture of putting a human in a videogame. Unfortunately, whilst an interesting idea, it isn't that well executed. Some of the dialogue is hammy, the acting is rather lacklustre and the effects feel over-stylised for what is actually needed, losing what should be a tense feel to Butler's character. Still, it has enough moments in it to make it a low-end rental due to some of the more frenetic scenes being well executed and its fast pace. 2.5/5
