1.0 out of 5 stars Great start but....., 21 Jan 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
When I bought this item I was very happy with its performance (clear recording even at quite a distance, long recording time, clarity of playback), so happy in fact that I bought two more. After about a week or so each stick slowly died, they are all now frozen along with the much needed information I collated.
Not happy.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Late Great!, 16 Jun 2009
Have just finished this book over three nights unable to put it down. It is a superbly researched and constructed piece of work. One of the finest biographies I've had the pleasure to read. Although one knows the obvious ending it is hat's off and cheers to the skill of Ms. Leider that she creates a sense of great sadness with the telling of Valentino's last hours.
Not just Rudy's story but a history lesson that breezes along at a cracking pace.

3.0 out of 5 stars Could have been great!, 26 May 2008
So close yet so far. This western is plat-formed by a slightly surreal approach, not always intentional. The main plus is a great "this is a job for a man" performance by the terrific Scott. The negatives are quiet a few, a final botched gunfight where no flash is seen; possibly the worst stunt fighting ever to find its way onto the silver screen via fist-fight beneath falling debris; a not so riveting performance from the female co-star.....
Watch out for Lee Van Cleef in pre Col. Mortimor days. As always, it is very hard to take your eyes off him....On the whole, this is a lazy Saturday afternoon must for Scott fans as long as you don't expect Seven Men From Now!

3.0 out of 5 stars BAD PRINT!, 26 Mar 2008
This is a very clever, full on, classic sci-fi adventure that captures a style of film-making enbracing noir and expressionism in a delightfully morbid-sense of cinematic storytelling. So why 3 stars? Because this print (welcomed in widescreen) looks as if (at times) it has been transferred from a long defunct Nickleodean. Sloppy grainy presentation. Shame.

5.0 out of 5 stars Classic noir., 22 Jun 2007
Only Burt Lancaster could carry this role. Known as a muscle man in previous movies, here, he plays weakness like nobody else. To be in love, in a noir, is a one way ticket to a bleak fade-out. Terrific build up and a devastating ending, this is a noir that sets the bench mark. Dan Duryea is a revelation. His sneaky, snake like performance makes you realise that there is no actor of his ilk around today that could carry such a role. Just watch him appear from the doorway darkness into the last light of the two doomed lovers and you are watching a final curtain ballet of death. As the cop sirens ring out, watch Duryea's face. This movie is a classic. PS; look out for TONY CURTIS, later to get equal billing with LANCASTER in SWEET SMELL OF SUCCESS, in an early non-speaking, dancing role with the soon to be MRS. MUNSTER. ENJOY!

MASTERPIECE! I give this top stars for content, storyline and acting. BUT.....no stars for this dreadful BFI print. Scratchy to say the least. If you are going to relese classic movies PLEASE give them the clean-up they deserve. Shame on you BFI.

5.0 out of 5 stars MASTERFUL DRAMA, 21 Dec 2005
This is a must-see for anybody even slightly interested in drama, acting and writing. A to-kill-for cast that includes career busting performances from the entire company but especially LEE MARVIN and ROBERT RYAN. Ryan in particular is a revelation. For those of us who only know him for FILM NOIR and WESTERN roles we here get a glimpse at this man's stage presence. I would love to have seen him live on stage. My only problem with this DVD is that it is a dreadful transfer. Top right of the screen flickers throughout the viewing and the colour shifts. SHAME. If you can live with these faults then you are in for a treat. Such a wonderful piece of work deserves a full-on clean up. inD (company).....get your act together!
