3.0 out of 5 stars BIT OF A LET DOWN AFTER ALL THE HYPE!!, 25 Feb 2011
UFC 114 was one of the most hyped and anticipated UFC events in the sports history, what with a massive grudge match between two former UFC light heavyweight champions, Rampage Jackson and Rashad Evans who were originally due to fight for the title back at UFC 98 but a jaw injury for Rampage ruled him out, they were then put as opposing coaches on the reality TV program The Ultimate Fighter and were to fight at the conclusion of that season, however Rampage left the UFC to take a part in the A-Team movie, which meant again there would be no fight, Jackson would eventually rejoin the UFC and his first fight back would be against Rashad Evans with the winner guaranteed a title shot.

The fight had a big build up including a three part primetime series thats included on the dvd, which only served to inflame the bad blood that had been brewing between the two, so this was really a fight that everyone was looking forward to, disappointly the fight didn't deliver to all the hype, with both men coming out fairly unscathed, even though the trash talk has continued and there will no doubt be a rematch on the cards somewhere down the line.

The rest of the card is pretty mediocre too with Antônio Rogério Nogueira(little nog) Vs. Jason Brilz been the stand out and even that's marred by a bad judging for English interest John Hathaway fights Diego Sanchez and Michael Bisping fights Dan Miller. The Full Preliminary card is included on the Dvd as is the always excellent countdown show as well as the post press conference whcih is always interesting, overall UFC 114 was not a bad event but with all the hype for the main event I was expecting a whole lot better.

Three Days [DVD] [1997] [Region 1] [US Import] [NTSC]
Three Days [DVD] [1997] [Region 1] [US Import] [NTSC]
Dvd ~ Jane's Addiction

3.0 out of 5 stars LIVE FOOTAGE THE HIGHLIGHT, 24 Feb 2011
This release follows Jane's Adiction back on the road in 1997 for the first time since they split six years earlier. Three of the original members have returned with the exception being bass player Eric Avery, so his place is filled by Red Hot Chilli Pepper bass player Flea.

Of course the stars of the show are going to be front man Perry Farrell and guitarist Dave Navarro. Drummer Stephen Perkins gets to make an odd appearnce while Flea is fairly non existint. You do get to see the ramblings of Farrell and Navarro and theres no doubt that theres some big egos here which would explain the short lived reunion.

But what you will really come back for is the live performances which are electric and show why Jane's are one of the most vital bands to come along in the last 20 years. The performances are not in their enteriety but give enough of an indication of what a Jane's show is all about. Ted, just admit it is an awesome performance while the brilliant Three Days is just plain epic.

Theres also 40 minutes of extra footage that didnt make the final cut. But its the live scenes which you will keep coming back to.

Live Voodoo [Blu-ray] [2010] [US Import]
Dvd ~ Jane's Addiction

4.0 out of 5 stars THE WAIT IS OVER!, 24 Feb 2011
It's taken a long time for Jane's Addiction to finally release an official live blu ray/dvd, and while we might have preferred something from 1990/91 when the band were on top of their game at least we get the original line up performing as opposed to the 97 reunion which had Flea on bass or the 2003 line up which had Chris Chaney on bass. Eric Avery(Who has since left the band again to be replaced by Duff McKagan) reunited with the band when they got back together in 2008 and they were much better live for it, those of us lucky enough to see the original Jane's line up on tour last year would no doubt agree!

So its the Voodoo Experience Festival, New Orleans, Halloween 2009 and the original Jane's line up are about to deliver a brilliant performance which see's them draw from their legendary studio albums 1988's Nothing Shocking and 1990's Ritual de lo Habitual as well as their self titled live debut release(2003's Strays has no material played from it mainly because Eric Avery did not appear on that album).

The band open up with instrumental Up The Beach before we hear Avery's familiar bass line as Mountain Song comes crashing out of the speakers. Without doubt some of Jane's best moments are in their longer songs such as 11 minute classic Three Days which has Dave Navarro playing one of the best guitar solo's ever as Perry Farrell dances with 2 scantily clad dancers(one of which is his wife Etty Lau) it's a song that could last 30 minutes and you'd still want to hear it again straight afterwards. On Then She Did Perry asks the crowd to celebrate death, the song still sounds as good as ever with all it's twist and turns, Been Caught Stealing really gets the crowd fired up, and just before the band begin Ocean Size Perry Takes a moment to reflect on the damage that hurricane katrina did to the city of New Orleans. Ted, Just Admit It is one of the highlights of the night as it reaches it's dramatic climax. For the encore Jane's play Jane Says and are joined on stage by loads of people in fancy dress, they then finish the night off with the Drum and Percussion heavy Chip Away.

The blu ray/dvd contains a small selection of extras the best being the two bonus tracks(1% and Ocean size) recorded in small clubs in 2008, as well as an NME featurette, the only draw backs about this release is that sometimes Perry's vocals seem a bit buried in the overall mix, but since official live Jane's footage is fairly thin on the ground this release is a must for Jane's fans!

3.0 out of 5 stars DECENT EVENT, 23 Feb 2011
There was a lot of mumblings from people when the card for UFC 120 was announced, not least from the 17,000 people who paid for tickets before any fight was announced, their main grumbling being the lack of a marquee name of course the main reason for this is that with the event being held in England is that it would not be shown till later that night in the U.S due to the time difference and the UFC generally don't put international events on pay per view, so they were hardly going to get a Brock Lesnar or Anderson Silva to headline the card.

What they got instead was their fellow country men in the two main events, the well known Dan "The Outlaw" Hardy vrs Carlos Condit in what turns out to be an edge of your seat fight! In the main event the very well known Michael Bisping battled Japanese and International superstar Yoshihiro Akiyama in what was fight of the night. Rising English fighter John Hathaway fresh of the biggest win of his career against Diego Sanchez fights welterwight veteran Mike Pyle. As you can now see the theme is British fighters against fighters from the rest of the world. Even the heavyweight clash between American Travis Browne and France's Cheick Kongo is considered U.K Vrs U.S.A as Kongo trains with the english team called Wolfslair thats home to Michael Bisping and Quinton Jackson. The last fight on the main card is between England's James Wilks and Canada's Claude Patrick.

As per usual with UFC DVD's nowadays you get loads of extras including all the pre lim fights that includes a lot of English fighters, so despite a lot of people thinking of this as a throwaway event there is some good stuff on here and is better than some of the American events we get, just goes to show you don't always need big names to create an exciting event!

4.0 out of 5 stars GREAT INSIGHT INTO A GREAT BAND, 23 Feb 2011
Now everybody knows Jack White can be a little bit different but there's no doubt about his talent whether it be with The White Stripes, The Racounteurs or latest band the Dead Weather however how much do we actually know about the other half of The White Stripes, drummer and some time vocalist Meg White? Its safe to say all we really know is that she used to be married to Jack and is married now to Patti Smiths son. So with this new documentary Under Great White Northern Lights do we suddenly get to know her better and find out what she's really like. Well the answer is NO but this documentary and live cd are well worth purchasing anyway

Filmed live on the Canadian leg of their 2007 tour for their album Icky Thump, we follow The White Stripes around on their tenth anniversary tour as they do things like play the worlds shortest gig(only Jack White could pull something like that off)Jack who is a keen bowler has them play in a bowling alley, on a boat as well as a on a moving bus! However its the relationship(or lack of) between Jack and Meg thats the real selling point of this documentary. Meg is really shy and you can tell she does not like being followed around by the camera. Of course after this Canadian tour they cancelled their US leg of the tour as Meg was suffering from acute anxiety so are we really watching Meg meltdown before our very eyes? One of the highlights is when Meg break down in tears as Jack performs White Moon in the studio.

The documentary is wonderfully shot in black and white with a hint of red by film maker Emmett Malloy, the live footage is great and shows what a great live band they have become and shows how that two people playing can be as just as loud as a full 5 or 6 piece band. Remember for this region 1 DVD you will need a region one or multi region DVD player to watch this.

The Social Network (2-Disc Collector's Edition) [Blu-ray] [2011] [Region Free]
Dvd ~ Jesse Eisenberg
Offered by filmrollen
Price: £3.70

5.0 out of 5 stars MASTERPIECE IN FILM MAKING, 21 Feb 2011
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
So many times we hear about a great film and how it's the best thing ever! Only to be left so disappointed by yet another over rated movie, however The Social Network does not fall into that category, because yes the critics praise has been worthy, The Social Network is one of the best films to come along in quite a while!

The first thing to say is that this is not a film about Facebook, yes its based around its creators Mark Zuckerberg and Eduardo Saverin, but what it really is about is how their invention came between their friendship. The way the film is set up works really well as far as story telling goes, Mark Zuckerberg played by the brilliant Jesse Eisenberg is involved in 2 cases at once, one involving co creator Eduardo Saverin played by Andrew Garfield and the other case involves Cameron Winklevoss and Tyler Winklevoss who claim they asked Zuckerberg to design a social networking site for Harvard and claim that Zuckerberg took their idea. Eduard Saverin is also involved in that case.

It says alot for a movie that features a lot of dialogue that The Social Network never becomes confusing, boring or hard to follow. This is helped brilliantly by Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross amazing score for the film. Director David Fincher(seven, fight club, zodiac) really brings out the best in all the scenes and to listen to his commentary on the film is amazing.

The Blu Ray comes packed with extras such as Fincher's Commentary as well as screenplay writer Aaron Sorkin along with the cast. On disc 2 there's a brilliant feature called How Did They Ever Make A Movie of Facebook? Its over one and half hours long and shows a great insight on how they made the movie including the difficulties that they had to over come, it also show what a great director Fincher is. It shows him and Sorkin discussing what they think would work better in different scenes. You also get Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross talking about the creation of the award winning score and how tough it was to recreate "In The Hall Of The Mountain" for the famous Henley Royal Regatta scene, they include two versions, one that made the movie and an earlier version that didn't.

The Social Network is a film you will come back to watch more than once, it features a great cast even Justin Timberlake playing Napster Founder Sean Parker plays his role very well. It really is one of the best films to come along in a while and you will not be disappointed!

3.0 out of 5 stars SAVED BY UNDERCARD, 21 Feb 2011
UFC 119 was a strange event which had former UFC heavyweight champion frank Mir facing off against Pride legend Mirko Cro Cop in a fight that would see the winner climb the rankings and this fight should have been all about Cro Cop's dangerous striking against Mir's dangerous Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu what we got was far from that maybe it was Cro cop taking the fight on short notice as Mir was originally supposed to fight Antônio Rodrigo Nogueira, but he had to pull out through injury.

In the co main event you have rising star Ryan Bader taking on big nog's brother Antônio Rogério Nogueira(small nog), this fight is far from spectacular, what really saves this event is former UFC Lightweight Champion Sean Sherk taking on rising star Evan Dunham. This fight is a back and forth war and still has people talking about it! we also get a stand up war between good friends Matt Serra and Chris Lytle. Also the undercard has a heavyweight war between Joey Beltran and The Ultimate Fighter contestant Matt Mitrione.

UFC 119 is not an essential purchase as the two main events are a let down, as with all UFC DVD's now there is loads of extras such as the countdown show which is always worth watching especially if you have not seen the event, watch that first. All the fights from the Preliminary card arre included as well. You will need a region dvd player to watch this event, remember the region 2 version is also available on Amazon.

4.0 out of 5 stars HISTORY IN THE MAKING, 19 Feb 2011
UFC 118 Edgar vs Penn 2 was a historic event in more than one way, even though the main event was a Lightweight championship rematch between defending champion Frankie Edgar and former Champion BJ Penn, the main talking point was fromer IBF middlewight champion and former IBA heavyweight champion boxer James Toney taking his first ever MMA fight against former UFC Heavyweight and Lightweight champion Randy Couture.

For years boxers, boxing press, boxing promoters and boxing fans have mocked MMA fighters boxing technique and James Toney was no exception as for the past couple of years he had said he could beat any fighter in MMA, so finally UFC president Dana White gave him his opportunity. However he would be fighting Randy Couture who was a former NCAA Division I champion in wrestling as well as an Olympic Alternate. The main event was a rematch from UFC 112 in which Frankie Edgar won a close fight to upset long reigning champion BJ Penn, surely lighting couldn't strike twice and the best lightweight in UFC history would regain his title? Demian Maia would also return to the octogan after his humiliating experience of UFC 112 when Anderson Silva danced and mocked Maia. Maia would get a chance to save face with a fight against fellow Brazilian Mario Miranda in a middleweight bout. The card is started of with an entertaining fight between Nate Diaz(Nicks younger brother) and Octogan veteran Marcus Davis. Hometown favorite Kenny Florian takes on Gray Maynard in which the winner is guaranteed a title shot against the winner of Edgar and Penn.

This 2 disc DVD comes stuffed with extras and includes the full Preliminary card of fights and the always excellent Countdown show which is what you should watch first if you haven't already seen the event. Remember that this is the region 1 version and you'll need a region one or multi region DVD player to watch this!
