Generally very good, and reminiscent at times of other great American writers. This book is far from perfect, it has intensely irritating habits (for example, the lead character being called by his full name 'Joseph Vaughn' by just about everyone most of the time. People just don't talk like that.) And yet, from time to time there are flashes of beautifully crafted writing that take your breath away. The plot is almost too grim for its own good and I'd worked out who did it by a process of elimination fro about the half way point. However, its still a very entertaining read. Not a masterpiece, but not far off it.

Haunted East Anglia
Haunted East Anglia
by Joan Forman
Edition: Paperback

5.0 out of 5 stars A must for those who love East Anglia..., 14 Feb 2014
This review is from: Haunted East Anglia (Paperback)
...or a good ghost story! I first came across this book many years ago when I was at University in Norwich. Its a very easy read, each story well told and with some real gems, such as 'The Little Maid of Southwold' and the 'Magdalene Street Oxfam shop'. Joan Forman's writing style is smooth and fluent, and her research good. Some editions have the photographs she took herself, which add a real sense of atmosphere.

Its a shame this book is no longer in print, and even more of a shame that the book is not available as a Kindle download. Its a book I don't lend, as I'd be devastated to lose it!

5.0 out of 5 stars Great book from an unexpected source, 12 Nov 2013
This review is from: The Ghost Files (Kindle Edition)
I picked this up as a 'loan' on the Amazon Prime Kindle lending library, and was really impressed. I think this book is probably aimed at young adults, but don't let that put you off reading it. Ghost Files is pacy, has an excellent storyline that puts many more experienced writers in this genre to shame, and is strong from start to finish. Stephen King said that the key to writing good horror/supernatural books is to make the reader care for the characters, and I think this is why 'Ghost Files' succeeds. I really like Mattie, I cared what happened to her from the first chapter, and all her characters have great likeability. OK, the writer is clearly new and the inexperience shows occasionally, but not to the detraction of the story and I never once wanted to stop reading. I really hope Apryl Baker writes another in the series soon.

I had no expectations of this book whatsoever. I don't generally read teen fiction, and had never heard of John Green. However, this is a beautifully written book, which succeeds with a difficult concept where others have failed. It isn't without it's flaws - what book ever is? - but it is worth reading.

4.0 out of 5 stars A really good follow on to a brilliant book, 16 Oct 2013
I have a great deal of admiration for Stephen King for even trying to follow up 'The Shining' because he was never going to better it. This book, which stands very well on its own, is well written and suspenseful, and in picking up key themes and familiar locations was a winner.

Without doubt, it wasn't as good as the Shining, mostly because the baddies weren't as convincing. However, it is well worth a read and kept me fully engaged from start to finish.

I've just finished 'Long Time Coming' - I found it by accident and I thought it was excellent. Clever and well crafted, it kept me guessing until the penultimate chapter. No graphic sex or murders to plough through (how refreshing to find an author that realises I'm an adult and I know how it's done, thanks) and enough of the supernatural to make it gripping but not scary. Life is too short to spend hiding behind the sofa. Great book, thanks!

This is the 2nd book I've read by the same author, I started a few weeks ago with 'The Waiting Room', which I loved.

This book is also fantastic, striking a perfect balance between excellent setting descriptions, a strong and well told story, and a strong writing style. I have read several negative comments about this, but I like it because the writing style is so accessible. Its easy to read, doesn't rely on over complicated literary techniques which frankly bore the bookends off me, and relies on the reader's intelligence to get into and follow the story. I don't give a moment's thought to whether 'and' should be 'but' or 'also'; or whether the editor should have pointed this out. I am far too interested in the story to worry about it.

I especially loved this book as a large chunk of it is set 2 miles from my house! I didn't know this when I bought it, but its a real bonus. Its also testament to FG Cottam's ability to write descriptions so well that I wanted to go out and find all the places he visited!

I bought both 'the Waiting Room' and 'Dark Echo' initially on Kindle. Its the ultimate compliment from me that I shall be buying 'real' copies of both books. They are far too good just to have in the reader.

5.0 out of 5 stars Perfect, 9 Feb 2013

This is a perfect ghost story. As well as being atmospheric and extremely evocative, it has an exceptionally clever and unexpected ending. If you are planning to read this book, don't be put off by the negative comments about the ending appearing in other reviews, I thought it was very clever, well constructed and suited the story perfectly. Sometimes the less obvious is far more rewarding than the easy option.

This is the first book I have read by this author. It certainly won't be the last. He could actually give stephen King a run for his money.

Brilliant.

2.0 out of 5 stars Good idea but just couldn't engage, 4 Feb 2013

This story had all the makings of a classic, but I was bored throughout and just couldn't engage with it. It was almost too ordinary. I found some elements of the story just too silly, interestingly mostly the mundane set - in - England bits. The war accounts were far more interesting. It was OK, but I wouldn't recommend it or want to read it again.
