The Knights & Chapel of the Thistle Edinburgh
The Knights & Chapel of the Thistle Edinburgh
by Stuart Matthew
Edition: Paperback

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Resource for the Thistle Chapel, 22 Jun 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
What I really like about this book is the enthusiasm of the author that oozes from page to page. He has cleverly caught every aspect of the Thistle Chapel and its history that every page is eye-catching and interesting. He includes real life craftsmen who worked on the Thistle Chapel and points out little gems of information that you could not get from any other book in the field. Its a unique book, well written, packed full of information and the photographs are amazing. Its also a very handy pocket book size making it really easy to slip it into a handbag or pocket. My advice? Make a coffee, put your feet up and read it from cover to cover - you will NOT be disappointed.

Dalkeith Street Plan: Including Mayfield, Newtongrange and Gorebridge (R.P.A. Smith Street Plans)
by Ronald P.A. Smith
Edition: Map

5.0 out of 5 stars THE perfect Map of Dalkeith, 22 Jun 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This is an excellent modern map of Dalkeith. I purchased it for an assignment on Dalkeith with the IHGS (Institute of Heraldic & Genealogical Studies), Canterbury.

I liked this map because it allowed me to work out from an historical map how many closes had vanished from census returns.

An excellent item for any genealogist, local or family historian interested in street names.

4.0 out of 5 stars Excellent book for Genealogists, Local and Family HIstorians, 22 Jun 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This is quite some book - it concentrates more on ENGLISH and WELSH family historians - I just wish there was a Scottish equivalent. Lots of good ideas on where to look and what kinds of information you are likely to find from the suggested sources. Good background to why searching the history of a house is beneficial to genealogists. It also states the different kinds of houses that people have lived in over the centuries - putting them into social context.

An excellent first book for anyone wanting to look at their property and its history.

Chislet and Westbere: Villages of the Stour Lathe
Chislet and Westbere: Villages of the Stour Lathe
by K.H. McIntosh
Edition: Paperback

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Resource for Genealogists, 22 Jun 2013

This is a really indepth book on Chislet, Kent. The author has split the book into different parishes of the area and it offers the readers the old place names and locations of them. The book also includes a map at the end which shows the boundaries of Chislet. There are old photographs too giving a real feel of the area.

I used this book as part of my assignment with the IHGS (Institute of Heraldic & Genealogical Studies) in Canterbury - and it helped quite a bit with establishing the boundaries of Chislet. Chislet itself has had quite an interesting past and this is certainly one book that you will not want to put down once you start reading it. For the genealogist, local or family historian this is an excellent put together book with lots of useful information to help anyone on their research of the area. Lots of historical facts keeping the whole book in the social context of the time.

I've recommended this book to the rest of IHGS students and I know they are really going to benefit from it.

This is a cracker of a book if you are doing One Name Studies with the Guild of One Name Studies (can certainly recommend you join if you havent already!!) - and good for using quotes for essays. Great for family historians too. Lots of detail and lots of good useful information which really makes this book interesting. Lots of background information on surnames too - makes this different from a few other books. You will not be disappointed in this purchase.

Discovering Surnames: Their origins and meanings

3.0 out of 5 stars Informative and very interesting, 3 Dec 2012

This is a good book on Discovering Surnames especially if you are doing a One Name Study with the Guild of One Name Studies. There are hundreds of Scottish names missing, but then its a relatively new publication. My suggestion is to write to the publishers and let them know the surname that is missing. Its a good book for looking up specific surnames and its a shame you can't look for the surname before you purchase it - out of the thousands of surnames I have in my family tree there are only a handful of surnames listed. Quite disappointing - but then thats really nobody's fault. Its good for doing essays on surnames though.

5.0 out of 5 stars A good book which is well balanced, 3 Dec 2012

This is a fantastic book - its well balanced (giving both sides and points of views) and excellent information for children involved in the battles between the Tudors and Stuarts (or I should say STEWARTS as it should have been originally). If you purchase this book you will NOT be disappointed.

4.0 out of 5 stars Informative and well written, 3 Dec 2012

This is a great book for both adults and children. Its told in an easy to follow format. Good quotes for essay writting. Children like the pictures which goes well with the writting. Could have done with a bit more information on the effects in Scotland - but on the whole its a good book and I suggest this book as a good purchase for children to learn about history.
