5.0 out of 5 stars The Best Edition of Grimm's Fairy Tales, 14 Feb 2014

I will not comment on the fairy tales themselves, only that this edition uses the popular and brilliant 1897 Margaret Hunt translation.

This book is as well constructed as can be. When reviewers say, 'this is the best book I have ever owned', we have no way of knowing if they are paperback buffs or hardcover lovers. Therefore, I will say I am a member of the Folio Society, I love quality bindings, and this is a seriously well-done book. It is clothbound, and the cloth is superb. Very soft, wonderful to touch, and is not fluffy with errant threads. It has trees and the title emblem printed directly on the cloth, which is very beautiful. No cheap glitter, and is very tight. The golden bookmark is excellent. Often you will find thin bookmarks that haven't been stitched at the end, which eventually unravel. This has been stitched, and it will not unravel at all. The book is sewn, and opens flat. The paper used is thinner than average (probably 60 gsm), and is perfectly manageable and opaque. It is well printed, and the illustrations are clear and sharp, as is the font. The colour illustrations are even printed separately on glossy paper for greater clarity.

Finally, what I consider a great achievement, as it is rare, is that the boards used for the book are very sturdy, but the real treat is the slipcase. Those of you who know the Folio Society know that each book comes with a slipcase. I have many Folio books, and many of their limited editions, and they have never produced a slipcase as sturdy as this one from Race Point Publishing. It is exceptionally strong, and will protect your books for many, many years. It also have a marvellous glossy cover featuring trees and titles. My single gripe is that the book protrudes about 2.5mm out of the slipcase, which makes no practical difference to this brilliant book.

I honestly can't believe the price of this volume. The only difference between a £40 cloth-bound Folio Society book and The Complete Grimm's Fairy Tales is that one was Printed in Germany, the other Printed in China. Look out for the other volumes in the Knickerbocker Classics by Race Point Publishing! So far we have the Complete Brother’s Grimm, The Complete Sherlock Holmes, and now The Complete Edgar Allan Poe. Keep ‘em coming!

5.0 out of 5 stars THIS IS NOT THE EDITION YOU'RE LOOKING FOR!, 8 Feb 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
The Conquest of Happiness is, of course, another Lord Russell classic. However, the edition that you perhaps see above (Amazon blends reviews of different editions), specifically the one which features these statements on the cover: "TIMELESS Concepts for TODAY" and "Media-Eight Self Help Classics", whose publisher (scroll down) is listed as Media Eight International, this edition is most likely not the edition you want. This is a sort of guide to Russell's original book, with a commentary on the elements, distilling what they think necessary for the ultimate self-help work out, not for a jaunt through the philosophical woods. Not a word of this book is from Bertrand Russell.

The edition you really want, and no other, is the Routledge Classics edition: The Conquest of Happiness (Routledge Classics)

Disregard any other edition you find, it is most likely not the edition you're looking for! (I found out the hard way...via a refund process)

5.0 out of 5 stars Winnie-the-Pooh, the best edition available!, 28 Jan 2014

Winnie-the-Pooh is magical, timeless, philosophical (just see the marvellous book, Pooh and the Philosophers, a horror to be out of print!), and essential to all our lives. I have owned many editions of Edward Bear's adventures, but this the best. It is a replica of the first editions that were released in the late 1920s, with the original line drawings (no colour, and gorgeous) by the brilliant E.H. Shepard. They are a perfect size, and each volume is a sturdy powerhouse, featuring sewn-binding, fantastic paper, and bound in real cloth. Add to that the gold foil embossing on the cloth (not the glitter, no, no, this stays on, and is durable), and the matt-finish, strong cardboard slipcase, it will last for years, and is a joy to behold.

The originals looked remarkably similar to this, only with a few differences: When We Were Very Young was more pink in colour, and they were all bound in sumptuous morocco (goatskin) with raised bands on the spines. However, along with those goats, comes an $8,000 price-tag. We love Pooh, and it is not that he isn't worth all that money, it's just that we can have almost the same thing, without the smell of soaked basements and seaweed, for a small fraction of the cost.

This is the best set, and one to be enjoyed for many, many years. Why is that important? It is important because we want Silly Old Bear with us, our families and our friends, for many, many years.

"Tigger is all right, really," said Piglet lazily. "Of course he is," said Christopher Robin. "Everybody is, really," said Pooh. "That's what I think," said Pooh. "But I don't suppose I'm right," he said. "Of course you are," said Christopher Robin.

This set is all right. Thank you, Egmont, for being faithful to Pooh and his friends.

Love,
Max

P.S. Of course, if you do want colour illustrations, the single, large hardback by Egmont (featuring the same materials and quality as this set, and a slipcase!) is perfect: Winnie-the-Pooh - The Complete Collection of Stories and Poems Finally, if you still want the colour illustrations, but in four volumes, and in a more manageable size (similar to this set above), Egmont's other offering suits your needs!: Winnie-the-Pooh Collection
